She pissed off someone at the label and is being punished for it. Typical record biz bullshit.

It’s insane that this is a semi-common occurence in the music industry. Isn’t Grimes the biggest star on 4AD’s roster?

treeship 2, Friday, 16 February 2018 12:25 (six years ago) link

The National and Tune-Yards have both had albums with bigger American numbers, but yeah, she's up there.

how's life, Friday, 16 February 2018 12:29 (six years ago) link

I don't know why I limited that to US sales, because The National's apparently big everywhere.

how's life, Friday, 16 February 2018 12:32 (six years ago) link

Art Angels charted surprisingly low for how popular she is on YouTube, she gets very large amounts of views for an indie act there

ufo, Friday, 16 February 2018 12:40 (six years ago) link

She’s a more culturally significant figure than anyone involved in those other acts though. For the 4AD brand she has to be valuable.

treeship 2, Friday, 16 February 2018 12:42 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I can't picture National fans tweeting at the label telling them to go fuck themselves either. https://twitter.com/search?q=4ad%20grimes&src=tyah

Grimes has some passionate fans. I imagine if the National were to deliver some bad news about an upcoming album, their fans would just keep clapping along regardless.

Does 4AD have a history with coming into conflict w/ artists?

Simon H., Friday, 16 February 2018 14:10 (six years ago) link

is there anything that makes people think it is her label specifically? maybe she is just fed up w an abusive industry as a whole

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

I mean the industry as a whole can't literally stop her from releasing music. Also she responded to someone who said it was because of "label/management reasons" with "no problems w management", so.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:21 (six years ago) link

“Yeah but i’m solving it. i just have to take one last hit. it sucks, but i’d rather not make fans suffer thru more unexplained drama. theres some srsly fucked up and crazy shit going behind the scenes in my career this whole time i’ve never spoken of to protect myself legally.”

she tweeted and deleted this earlier. i know she had a bunch of problems with Arbutus, shame there seems to be something with 4AD now.

ufo, Friday, 16 February 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

lol. I missed this one last night.

hahaha ha. don't commit crimes for grimes --- i can solve , been thru worse 💀💀

how's life, Friday, 16 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

In a situation like this it's possible another label could buy her out of her contract.

Moodles, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

I wonder if at this point in her career she'd prefer to be on a major or totally independent. You'd think the latter, but who knows?

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 16 February 2018 18:35 (six years ago) link

this sucks for her. do think it might be worth paying attention to how many (or, cough, how few) of grimes' friends over the years still collaborate with her.

sean gramophone, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:35 (six years ago) link

does it matter?

omar little, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:39 (six years ago) link

i think it does if the people in this thread are theorizing about blame and why this could be happening

sean gramophone, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:53 (six years ago) link

smell what i smell? a thread that's about to get good

imago, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link

probably best not to open that can of worms with that one, since this is a thread she may have actually seen before.

omar little, Friday, 16 February 2018 19:01 (six years ago) link

let's speculate blindly about things we know nothing about

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 16 February 2018 19:02 (six years ago) link

anyway i hope the issue is resolved whatever it may be, bc her next one is my most anticipated album.

omar little, Friday, 16 February 2018 19:04 (six years ago) link

she definitely comes off like someone who could be abrasive and wilful but she's an excellent artist and yeah basically whatever it takes for her to get the next album out

imago, Friday, 16 February 2018 19:07 (six years ago) link

Lots of people go through different creative partnerships as a way of sparking inspiration and growing, I don't know why this by itself would be a sign of, well, what?

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 16 February 2018 19:12 (six years ago) link

Her music is so good. I’m glad she doesn’t compromise.

treeship 2, Friday, 16 February 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link

The label blocking the release of her music is a crime against the public.

I wonder how many times in recent years labels have bounced things back at the artist saying the material they’re given isn’t what they want to release. It seems like things are a little looser now, but I’m guessing that’s kind of an illusion because not everyone wants to mention it in public

mh, Friday, 16 February 2018 20:44 (six years ago) link

not sure how cool I am with the inference of the sterotype "this woman is difficult to work with for being demanding" when actually most of these stories turn out to just be women wanting the clarity of their artistic vision executed properly

boxedjoy, Friday, 16 February 2018 21:17 (six years ago) link

how do you feel about Billy Corgan

given how she's spoken on how male producers have literally tried to use their position to coerce her into sex i am /especially/ wary of people playing the "this woman's issues with the industry must be because she's demanding/hystreical/[insert other personality issue with misogynistic overtones here]" card against her in particular

Spicy thread

flappy bird, Friday, 16 February 2018 22:03 (six years ago) link

those tweets have been deleted since.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:32 (six years ago) link

In any case she made it clear Roc Nation (whatever the name) has been supporting her and she seems very grateful for their presence in this moment. She's hinting problems might come from earlier in her youth, and knowing how rocky her relationship to Arbutus was, it might stem from that.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:34 (six years ago) link

Ugh I hate social network drama but really wish she would release new music. Claire if you ever read this: I LOVE YOU but you need to stop posting half truths on twitter. Either tell the whole version or stop being passive agressive and solve that personal shit with lawyers behind the curtain.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 17 February 2018 04:52 (six years ago) link

she said she's working on solving it and doesn't want to make fans wait, hope it works out for her

ufo, Saturday, 17 February 2018 05:22 (six years ago) link

Well then why involve the fans at all? Either drop the name of the target for all fans to go rabid on it or move your fnger from the trigger. Abstractly venting on twitter is spineless and I’m fucking done with it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 17 February 2018 07:14 (six years ago) link

harsh

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 07:23 (six years ago) link

venting on twitter could actually galvanize 4AD or whoever tf it is into coming to their senses. also who cares. "Removed Bookmark from Thread," wait til the new album is out

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 07:24 (six years ago) link

"spineless"... lol. what tf is she supposed to do? "abstractly venting" is literally what twitter is for

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 07:25 (six years ago) link

theres a million possibilities who knows

SZA complained on twitter then her album came out & it was dope

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 17 February 2018 07:31 (six years ago) link

This isn’t specifically about her, but really fuck passive agressive comments on social networks, if she has a problem with someone tell it to his/her face or involve the lawyers. Everything else is a low shot.

hon, you must be pretty naive if you think a purposeful enough face-to-face conversation is guaranteed to make a label exec see an artist's side or that filing a suit isn't still as costly for an independent artist as it is for everyone else (and perfectly capable of failing and/or further pissing off the label she's still signed to)

"abstract venting" is probably the only way she can inform fans/media about what's happening and take some sort of course of action without hurting her career or getting the lawyers sent after her herself

heliogabberlus, Saturday, 17 February 2018 08:37 (six years ago) link

also i'm still reeling over the first post in here describing a visions cut as "electro-Frankie Valli"

like bitch what kind of shade are you trying to throw

heliogabberlus, Saturday, 17 February 2018 08:39 (six years ago) link

tbh maybe she did say it to someone's face and it's gone nowhere and now she's venting a bit on twitter. no big deal. and no idea what happened, either. but i don't think she's a spineless type.

omar little, Saturday, 17 February 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

raging online about intractable situations w companies is a time-honoured tradition

ogmor, Saturday, 17 February 2018 09:26 (six years ago) link

Also accusing people by name on the internet, if she doesnt have enough grounds to file suit, might not be the best idea and keeping it abstract would be the better option.

plums (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 17 February 2018 09:27 (six years ago) link

I mean, say what you want about Grimes' social media style, but while us greybeards are over here tutting in our armchairs or whatever, there's a teenager from Jakarta mailing a ripe piece of durian to 4ADs offices. They gave up being good when they declared a state of war, imo.

Also welcome to the convo, heliogabberlus. I think an early rock 'n' roll influence is very apparent in Oblivion although whether it's Frankie Valli could be up for debate. No shade.

how's life, Saturday, 17 February 2018 11:02 (six years ago) link

Actually, I remember my first time listening to Visions and being confused that there wasn't more doo-wop. lol

how's life, Saturday, 17 February 2018 11:21 (six years ago) link

i'll admit it's been a little while since i had a proper front-to-back listen, but the main reason the valli comparison struck me a certain way was, besides not being able to remember any sonic or compositional stuff that'd ever triggered an "ah yes, this makes me think of what i've heard of frankie valli", the main think i associate with valli is the... distinctive (which is a polite way of saying i'm frankly not a fan, but each to their own) voice

and that's never something i've thought of claire's vocal style being that close to. the video(?) meant to be embedded in the first post just shows up as a bunch of blank white space for me, and it's nearly 1 am so i can't be arsed googling what the "lead leak" was
