I don't know how I have managed to live this long without watching this show, but I just started this month and am on Season 5. One curiosity though, the term "fish, fishiness, serving fish" to imply femininity??? I had never heard this before. I'm a little surprised that it seems to still be widely used considering that they stopped pushing she-mail.

Yerac, Monday, 19 February 2018 20:48 (six years ago) link

I mean, everything about Drag Race will soon be overruled by the new wokeness eventually

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 February 2018 00:22 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I only really started noticing it during season 4 and 5 and we both were like, why do they keep talking about fish...I really hope it doesn't mean what it seems to mean.

Yerac, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 00:43 (six years ago) link

Half expected Shange to say, "Cool runnings, Mon, bobsled."

Okay, last night! And now we have an idea as to how they'll all come back next week too...

press release I just got ...

BOB THE DRAG QUEEN TO JOIN TRIXIE MATTEL AS GUEST CO-HOST OF VICELAND’S
‘THE TRIXIE & KATYA SHOW’ FOR FINAL FIVE EPISODES OF SEASON

February 22, 2018, Brooklyn, NY —“RuPaul’s Drag Race” fan favorite Bob The Drag Queen will join Trixie Mattel as guest co-host of VICELAND’s popular “THE TRIXIE & KATYA SHOW” for the remaining five episodes of the show’s first season, it was announced today. Bob’s first episode will air on Wednesday, February 28 at 10:30PM.

In making the announcement, co-host Trixie Mattel said, “For the second half of the season, we decided to get someone to make me look even more beautiful. Please welcome Bob the Drag Queen!"

On her new gig, Bob quipped, “I am so excited to be guesting on ‘THE TRIXIE & KATYA SHOW.’ I'm neither Trixie or Katya, but it is Black History Month so. . .”

Bob comes to the show to fill in for co-host Katya Zamolodchikova (aka Brian McCook) who announced earlier this year that he’s taking the year off to focus on his health.

“Everyone continues to support Brian on his path to getting healthy,” said VICELAND Executive Producer and SVP Development, Nomi Ernst Leidner, “While we will miss Katya dearly, we’re are very excited to offer fans more episodes of ‘THE TRIXIE & KATYA SHOW’ with another powerhouse from the Drag Race roster.”

“We love Katya more than words can say, " added World of Wonder co-founders Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey. "And we are so grateful to the she-larious Bob for stepping up and supporting his drag sisters.”

Trixie is currently appearing on the new season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars” and her recent single “Moving Parts” recently topped the iTunes singer/songwriter chart.

Uh, wait, what did I miss here.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

That announcement was a month or so ago, but yes, it was a shocker. My hunch is that once the show went big, it got too far out of Katya's control. It certainly does feel different from (and in many ways inferior to) Uhhnnnn.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

Yeah he said on Twitter he was struggling with his sobriety - it was just a very abrupt “this isn’t doing me any favors I gotta go like NOW”
Trixie said they still stay in touch etc so there’s no falling out or anything but it can’t have been easy to pick up the pieces from that, regardless

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

Yeah I've seen a couple of the Viceland episodes and it's...just not as good. There are moments but the sheer careening silliness, as much a product of the brilliantly unhinged post-production as to what they were doing themselves, is absent and much missed.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

idk i liked the Viceland show

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:47 (six years ago) link

I mean, it's not the Rob Lowe version of Wayne's World or anything. But it's def not the same flavor.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 23 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

Oof, nothing I've typed in the last year has so effortlessly dated myself.

lol

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 23 February 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link

trixie's humor comes out a lot more on tT&KS

clouds, Saturday, 24 February 2018 01:45 (six years ago) link

I agree.

I found this week to be more like an early-episode season-starter. Like, the theme was super exciting but then the actual challenge and runway were a little bit lame and disappointing? Or was it just me?

Plus the shorter run-time is really noticeable on these workroom-centric challenges, because you don't really get to see very much of what they're doing or how they're assembling their costumes etc.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 24 February 2018 03:24 (six years ago) link

Nah, it's not just you, I felt the same way, really underwhelming (and this is coming on the heels of what's IMO a very disappointing Snatch Game). Add the shorter runtime with the lack of Untucked, and there's more content they need to cram in.

Going back to last week, it's a mighty coincidence that after the lip sync, Ru asked Shangela second, HMMMMMM.

Rick Wokeman (Leee), Saturday, 24 February 2018 05:23 (six years ago) link

what do you mean coincidence? assume it's obvious but the producers always know who each queen has picked to eliminate (and can make further choices accordingly - like saying both queens' choices will apply). visuals aren't the only reason they use named prop lipsticks!

this episode was dumb. the judges' critiques were unusually off-base. bebe's dress was bad, aja's outfit was great; the "history" nerddom felt arbitrary and in bad faith. aja was my favourite remaining queen so i'm sad.

confused by the end of the episode - only three of the eliminated queens were back on stage? confusing.

sean gramophone, Sunday, 25 February 2018 02:29 (six years ago) link

One of which seemed to clearly be Aja.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Sunday, 25 February 2018 02:32 (six years ago) link

bebe is so mediocre imo. she is getting a bizarre pass in every challenge and runway.

clouds, Sunday, 25 February 2018 04:52 (six years ago) link

the lipsync was totally set up for her to win, she’d already nailed the Diana Ross runway a couple of weeks ago

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 25 February 2018 05:59 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I felt really bad for Aja. She explained her outfit really well and she was right about it. She looked very chic Seventies chick, and Bebe didn't even make her own costume. Although her can was the only one I would pick off a shelf. Spicy peanut soup, yum. Mind you, some of the dullest banter with the judges I've ever seen. "Is peanut soup a thing where you come from?" "Yes". Oh, well, good we cleared that up.

Fair play to Shangie, she messed up on her costume and she owned that trainwreck of a thing she went out there in. BRAVERY.

trishyb, Sunday, 25 February 2018 12:22 (six years ago) link

Sure, but how did they know that Shangela would bait and switch -- i.e. did the producers just luck into it? With the way reality shows tend to operate, I doubt it, meaning that there was some coordination between contestants and producers.

ANYWAY, I've also been generally underwhelmed by Beebs and was confused with her praise in the judging. The rhinestones made her look cross-eyed!

i watched the meet the queens for season 10 and they all seem like fucking nightmares

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 February 2018 19:11 (six years ago) link

it seems like they collected a lot of younger girls who think that being a drag queen is just being a huge bitch? or maybe they're just playing into the reality show conceits or something but it seemed like 80% of the girls answered every question with "well i AM that bitch and that's all you need to know" and it's like "ok but you need to make a joke now or something cuz...."

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 February 2018 19:13 (six years ago) link

That's def nothing new for the meet the queens vids. Lots of C-minus drama promising.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Monday, 26 February 2018 19:16 (six years ago) link

Has everybody seen the Behind the Elimination clip this week? It's easily the funniest this season so far. Aja really grew on me this time around.

The BTS vids are great for the "queens just hanging out and cracking jokes" vibe that isn't so present this season.

As for season 10 queens, I like Miz Cracker! Discovered her a few weeks before the cast reveal:

...twenty minutes to run in tonight's episode and I thought "Wait, is she going to take herself out?" And damned if she didn't do that, icon forever, etc.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 March 2018 06:41 (six years ago) link

as someone who is deeply non-confrontational and not competitive with other ppl, i kinda felt DeLa on this one. I don’t love her generally but hats off to her for going with her gut

Morgan she died for u fyi, don’t choke now bitch

that was an incredible episode

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 March 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

absurd drama, crying... great performances, lough out loud dramatic twist... so many ridiculous reaction shots

J0rdan S., Friday, 2 March 2018 09:10 (six years ago) link

Ru not knowing how to act was the cherry on top. So much of her persona rests on being true to yourself and living out your inner stardom, and that’s exactly what Ben did, but at the total expense of the competition that’s become Ru’s star vehicle.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 2 March 2018 13:10 (six years ago) link

The one 'yeah but' element in terms of actual surprise -- given the clip at the end showing Bendela painting her name on the little bar, it's not like the crew didn't know. (Of course, exactly when that's filmed is another question...)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 March 2018 15:36 (six years ago) link

I really thought the eliminated queens' song was better than the top-five queens' song, even though the performances might not have been as good.

trishyb, Friday, 2 March 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link

Aja was so damn good

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 2 March 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link

aaahahahaha @ milk “why did you allow me to act this way???”

Various Bendela interviews out there now, I liked this one:

http://www.vulture.com/2018/03/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-3-bendelacreme-interview.html

And to my question above:

I worked very, very quickly. I fully hid that. I scribbled out the name on the lipstick with a Sharpie and then I wrote in mine with the Wite-Out. I totally, secretly snuck those into my bra when I knew there were no cameras on me. I was like, If I’m going to do this, it just has to happen fast. So I just pulled that Sharpie out, scrawled my name on there with that Wite-Out as fast as I could, and shoved it in my bra. The only people in the room with you are the director and the cameraman — there are some secret producers somewhere else — but they just both were staring at me, slack-jawed. So I was like, Oh great, nobody’s going to stop me because they’re all dumbfounded.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 March 2018 20:59 (six years ago) link

Also says here and elsewhere about how Ru keeps very private where Michelle is the more outgoing/in contact with competitors one, which makes total sense.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 March 2018 21:00 (six years ago) link

OMFG.

SHANGELA IS THE SAME AGE AS BEBE AND KENNEDY!!!!!!!

Rick Wokeman (Leee), Saturday, 3 March 2018 23:18 (six years ago) link

that isnt v shocking imo, Shangy’s been around forevah

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 3 March 2018 23:29 (six years ago) link

I was about to say, it's almost ten years on from when she first appeared on the show and everything.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 March 2018 00:55 (six years ago) link

and like Bebe ahe didn’t seem THAT young when she first appeared

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 4 March 2018 01:06 (six years ago) link

I assumed that Bebe was already in her 30s during season 1, mostly because of her refined bearing; so putting her in the same room as Shangela, I put their ages on radically different trajectories. It's mostly how I perceived their maturity (lol Shaaange).

BTW, was Beeb's leopard catsuit the same one she wore in her first season?

Rick Wokeman (Leee), Sunday, 4 March 2018 01:09 (six years ago) link

That's amazing. So you weren't the one that gave her the white out then?

No. Thorgy gave her the white out. Thorgy painted her nails with white out because she's a homeless, dumpster person. And then, Ben was like, "Can I use that white out?" That's literally what happened.
