I know someone who was on this show, missed his flight and made up a complete lie, about missing his brother's wedding or something, to get on another flight. He doesn't even have a brother.

was up north this weekend. was told about a babbys yed. seems real english.

"In Wigan you can still go to the chippy with your own Pyrex dish and ask for: “A babbys yed – leave t’elmet on – chips an’ pea wet.” The translation of this puzzling indigenous language: “A baby’s head [steak pudding], with the tinfoil still on with chips and pea wet.” As to the aforementioned steak pudding it is so named due to the gentle dip in the top of the suet which bears a striking resemblance to the depressed fontanel of a new-born infant whose skull plates have yet to move into position."

"pea wet" universally understood and needs no translation i guess?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 12:33 (six years ago) link

Haha I clearly remember the first time I went to a chip shop with my friend (also from Wigan) and heard him ask for a baby's head (fwiw he deffo didn't pronounce it "babby's yed") - I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

THIS is Real England April 2018. All conspiracy theories and desperate hopelessness.

thomasintrouble, Sunday, 15 April 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link

Yeah '..agenda' is the new 'narrative'.

piscesx, Sunday, 15 April 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link

In fact 'They've got their own agenda' is to the late 2010s what 'It's political correctness gone mad' was to the mid-1990s.

If I'm having sausages and chips I'll make some instant onion gravy. I can't get down with curry sauce.

chip shop curry sauce is the greatest thing though

thomasintrouble, Sunday, 22 April 2018 10:32 (five years ago) link

I'm not a chip snob, but feel strongly that something as simple as onion gravy should be made with caramelised onions, butter, wine, beef stock, flour etc, not that fucking instant shite!

being a top class masterchef is all about timing.

calzino, Sunday, 22 April 2018 10:45 (five years ago) link

I once saw a Chippy Chinese style Curry sauce youtube masterclass. You basically just deepfry a load of onions, apples, garlic, ginger and then add industrial amounts of oil, flour, msg, madras curry powder to the filtered out gack. The process was so repulsive it put me off having it, until the next time I had it and loved it of course!

calzino, Sunday, 22 April 2018 11:01 (five years ago) link

Sometimes chippy curry sauce overdoes the sweetness for me but when it's on song it's the best, noe let us talk of this no more cos my local chippy doesn't open on a sunday

curry sauce is just spicy gravy

la vache qui pleure (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2018 11:19 (five years ago) link

I was wondering 'do Bisto make an instant curry sauce?' and of course they do because Real England:

I didn't mean it in a judgemental way snoball, peace to all and whatever gravy you like. But there ain't nothing sophis' about making it yourself ffs!

calzino, Sunday, 22 April 2018 11:29 (five years ago) link

Cooking with wine is pretty sophis where I come from. Although keep in mind that up until the late 80s 'curry' in this area meant minced beef with a bit of curry powder and sultanas. Maybe put a bit of turmeric in with the rice to be fancy.

2018 has to be better (snoball), Sunday, 22 April 2018 11:34 (five years ago) link

packets of readymix curry sauce were an 80s classic if you love sweet yellow gunk

la vache qui pleure (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 22 April 2018 11:35 (five years ago) link

the thing about that Chinese "curry and chips" style sauce is that it's obviously really fucken basic but the difference between a great one and a crap one is so huge
