He reminded me of Antony/Anhoni, but, I have to say. . . like as a major upgrade. The music is much more interesting in terms of production and arrangement, and I find his voice and vocal approach (with the avowed Gospel background) much more compelling. Antony/Anhoni was always someone I wanted to like, more than I actually liked, especially with the Lou Reed/Bjork seals of approval. Serpentwithfeet was instant head-over-heels "yes".

Love Four Ethers and his Bjork remix, keep meaning to listen to more (or I'm sure I have and it just hasn't stuck with me as much).

I think if you're responding to "Four Ethers," I can't imagine you wouldn't be wowed by the whole EP. So--go listen, don't wait! : )

I hope you all have been catching him on tour. Just really truly special. I wasn't sure how he could capture what he's doing live--but he does, but adds an intimacy and warmth (and humor and kindness) that can't really come across on the records. He turned a noisy typical hipster bar in Boston last night--replete with dudes talking and drinking loudly through the opener--into a black/white/gay/straight choir and it seemed to happen without overt invitation. He is spellbinding but with-the-audience not above them, and it allowed him to explore whispers to walls of sound (and conversation, and readings of black women writers). I envied folks who saw him in churches before the show, but he brought that special feeling of a place of attentiveness with him. He's really doing something complex and unique but without any of the strains of most "experimental" work, because it's clear he's just using his real voice naturally--and it just happens to be a voice that requires multi-hyphenate descriptors to approximately describe. But the voice (literal and artistic) is the point, far easier and better to experience than to define.

Saw Washington Post critic rave on twitter about his DC show. My admittedly quick listen to his latest recording has not yet won me over to thinking that his gospel meets Antony and Sam Smith approach is as great as some think, but I will listen more.

Several of my favorite writers like it. I don't. I'm getting ANOHNI vibes: well-meant tunelessness with a few good beats.

huh i remember enjoying the ep but the album is i guess not for me

album kinda washed over me but I'm kicking myself that I missed out on the chance to see him at a tiny venue here, I bet that was special

'Blisters' was definitely more immediately arresting to me, but 'Soil' is definitely a slow-burner. Seeing him perform the album songs live revealed new aspects and made it make more sense to me. He's definitely a singular talent with so much more to come. (And for my taste, a much much more appealing voice than Anhoni).

Yeah I know what you're saying, there are some hooks in there too though (like 'cherubim'). It feels like the kind of record that washes over me at first but makes me want to listen again, and gets catchier with familiarity rather than having instant hooks (kinda like the Moses Sumney record).

That's just glorious. The dramatic, baroque darkness of the first EP consumed me when--but it's honestly just thrilling to see serpentwithfeet leave that behind and embrace this sort of radiant warmth. It's honestly a bold shift, given darkness is an easier sell in the slightly-underground-music world I think he still operates within. I love it and cannot wait for this new album.

incidentally i DID see him live, back when there were too many live shows to keep track of. He was great, totally clarified the gospel influence and did lots of back and forth with the crowd and moments of joy. looking forward to seeing him again.

Got my LP copy today but my record player is packed for a move. So gotta wait for the Bandcamp download on Friday. Can't wait!

And agreed--seeing him live (in Boston, 2019) was one of the best and most joyful shows I've been to in recent years.
