there's a new Kirby game demo up for free on the eShop. haven't played it yet but the screenshots look pretty nice.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 4 March 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

demo is out worldwide now I think? its fun and i'm glad there's a new co-op platformer me and my lady can play following how good rayman legends was in that regard

jamiesummerz, Monday, 5 March 2018 10:23 (six years ago) link

Looking forward to it with the kids.

Still getting my ass kicked in rudimentary ways by Doom. But I think I decided to stick with the next to easiest mode (which is to say, default), which has been too difficult for me to progress but I figure I'll eventually figure things out and in the meantime have more fun and make the game last longer.

there's actually some cool games lined up for 2018 that I hadn't clocked: kentucky zero TV edition; light fingers; shakedown hawaii; wargroove; 2064; fire emblem switch;

those plus yoshi, octopath & mario tennis should see me through. plus there's still plenty of year left for announcements.

||||||||, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

there's a lot of major titles we know have been in development (yoshi, fire emblem, pokemon, metroid, pikmin, whatever mysterious thing retro studios has been working on for the past 4 years) people are just getting antsy since none of them are actually confirmed for this year yet and the release calendar is going blank

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:45 (six years ago) link

also ppl seem to think they're gonna release an updated version of the wii u smash bros concurrently with the paid online service going live this fall, which makes almost too much sense to not happen

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link

pls

nxd, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

need to get my mr game & watch fix

nxd, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

Obviously people are clamoring for Smash Bros., but at the same time people are hoping for more than just ports.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 23:31 (six years ago) link

i feel like they deserve a couple of years of slack considering how good Mario and Zelda came out

Nhex, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 23:50 (six years ago) link

Nintendo doesn't really announce too much in advance. Mario was revealed at the E3 in June 2017 and released in October. its totally possible they just drop Metroid/Pokemon at any point this year.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 04:26 (six years ago) link

Man it sort of breaks my heart to hear all this optimism about nintendo release schedules, maybe none of you guys owned wii U (or gamecube). I mean I really hope I'm wrong and nintendo get it right this time but they've got a pretty consistently bad track record when it comes to actually getting around to releasing games for their systems, yes 2017 was a huge exception to that but it's far from guaranteed they won't just fall back again.

I mean maybe I'm non-standard but my refusal to rebuy games I already bought on wii u, coupled with a long history of picking up indie titles in steam bundles means that switch for me is still pretty much a 2 (maybe 3) game console.

JimD, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 10:27 (six years ago) link

In Nintendo’s favour they are putting nearly all their development resources behind Switch games with only the occasional small team making mobile games, whereas before it was split 50/50 between console and handheld. They also seem more open to loaning out series to outside teams, which should lead to more releases like the excellent Rabbids Kingdom. I’m optimistic!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 11:07 (six years ago) link

there will be a large swathe of recent switch owners who never owned a wii U so fully expecting ports up the wazoo (which is fine by me because I never had a U.) crazy the switch has already outdone the U’s lifetime numbers in its first year

||||||||, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 11:38 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I never had a U so ports are fine with me. But if Nintendo wants to keep this thing rolling they need to keep things interesting, which means not only predictable Nintendo ports or, for that matter, predicable titles (Kirby, Metroid, etc.), but uncharacteristic edgy legacy ports like Dark Souls, Doom, and Wolfenstein, and new games that keep up the "must play" allure. For me, the games I have pre-ordered are DK:Tropical Freeze, Kirby (for the kids) and Dark Souls. Other than that, I suspect more and more indies, like if Hollow Knight ever comes out, but AAA Nintendo titles would be good to get on the public schedule. Having things on the calendar to look forward to (which we'll get, sooner or later) keeps up the excitement.

30 minute Direct tomorrow!

YUSSSS

valorous wokelord (silby), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

Cool. I hope it's not just, like, Animal Crossing, which I know my younger daughter would be into but I just don't care about.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 14:56 (six years ago) link

I've learned I can't concentrate on more than one game at a time, and I guess I'll be playing Zelda for the next quadrillion months, so it's all fine with me.

Definitely picking up Dark Souls as I've heard it mentioned so often in reference to BOTW. But generally all I want is HD remasters of old Zeldas and, I dunno, a Red Dead Redemption port

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:01 (six years ago) link

BTW, was having a technical issue with my Switch that took almost two-hours (!) to resolve on the phone with Nintendo Customer Service, but they were sooooooo nice and patient and fun to talk with. The second guy they forwarded me to after a while, he and I just talked Celeste for a few minutes.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:02 (six years ago) link

Yeah had a great chat with the CSR about Stardew Valley when I called to set up a fix for our left Joy-Con

valorous wokelord (silby), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:03 (six years ago) link

and, I dunno, a Red Dead Redemption port

or even a brand new RDR!

Mordy, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

the relative popularity of Nintendo franchises is interesting to me, like you may think of Mario and Zelda as the big ones but it's actually Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon

ciderpress, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 16:36 (six years ago) link

I love this system so much and would sacrifice animals if it meant they start releasing Virtual Console for it... my favourite thing about the Wii was Sin And Punishment localized

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

what’s the latest generation lthat’s feasible on the switch VC? gamecube?

||||||||, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

dunno what you mean by that, would prob be trivial to run wii games on switch in their original resolution

ciderpress, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

Oh I meant N64 Sin And Punishment

Tho it'd be nice to play Star Successor on the Switch too, that game is great

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

The results were promising and suggested Switch should be able to run each game at least as well as its original state. How much better, of course, will depend on Switch's final hardware.

suggests its not trivial for it to run GC games (tho it should be capable)

||||||||, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 18:21 (six years ago) link

we know theres a NES emulator included in the current firmware, and theyre planning to run out old NES games on a rotation as part of the online service, but idk about other VC

ciderpress, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 18:37 (six years ago) link

smh not one person hyped for the next mario party :)

nxd, Thursday, 8 March 2018 12:09 (six years ago) link

i'd love a virtual console for switch and would happily buy vc games i've already bought for wii/wii u/3ds because i am a massive sucker but i suspect that nintendo might have stumbled upon a more lucrative way to keep selling their back catalogue via the nes mini and snes mini

War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Umami (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 March 2018 12:48 (six years ago) link

surely the n64 mini can't be far behind

War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Umami (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 March 2018 12:48 (six years ago) link

imagine they just built an actual Virtual Console, instead of these classics, that runs everything their VC did. Stick some old Wii bits in it or something. And they just released "limited edition" virtual consoles in the shape of an NES, SNES, N64, etc. man i should work for nantendo

flippy bard (Will M.), Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:20 (six years ago) link

That's almost what's happening isn't it? I mean I got the impression the SNES mini hardware was pretty much the same as the NES mini hardware.

JimD, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:22 (six years ago) link

but like, put a little wifi or lan cable in there and let me download games i pay you for kinda thing. like the Wii VC, but on one of these things. (instead of just letting me hack games onto it or whatever.)

flippy bard (Will M.), Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:24 (six years ago) link

Nintendo will never give you access to everything you want from the back catalog all at once

valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:25 (six years ago) link

I am so happy with my hacked SNES mini, I'm going to hack my Switch if possible

The problem with a theoretical N64 mini is that the N64 canon is actually so fucking skewed in its estimation. If I could go back in time I'd probably murder Leopold 2 but I'd definitely fire Rare's art department

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

If an N64 Mini cost $79 and only had Paper Mario on it I’d get it.

valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

banjo-kazooie is the only n64 rare game that holds up imo, unless im forgetting one

ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:01 (six years ago) link

oh diddy kong racing is fine i guess

ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

would much rather have a gameboy mini tbh

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:09 (six years ago) link

xxxxpost

apparently Switch hacking is (a) extremely possible and (b) extremely unpatchable

You are forgetting Goldeneye!

DJI, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:13 (six years ago) link

Although maybe it doesn't hold up against the FPS of today.

DJI, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

goldeneye was legendary in its time but its hard to play today imo

ciderpress, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:20 (six years ago) link

keep in mind nintendo has previously been able to permanently block hacked 3DSes from their online services, so there's some risk there w/ hacking switch
