OMG. Thank you! Sometimes I just wish I would get some non-threatening case of mono or pneumonia so I can lay in bed and watch all of these without interruption.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:21 (six years ago) link

I literally only started watching it as a lark because I was living in Oahu for 5 months last year and was missing Hawaii. I've gotten so many people hooked. It's hard to convince some people though that the series in Japan locales are far superior.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:24 (six years ago) link

Dang, jealous of your O'ahu residency... but yeah Aloha State is the worst season by far. I met Avian when she was a kid at her mom's shop lol.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

First thing I've learnt from this series: 'hot pot sergeant' appears to be a thing.

Yes, two people have said it independently so far! Excellent phrase.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:32 (six years ago) link

It's weird to watch Aloha State before other seasons. Like, they don't explain the premise of people being "pre-planned" to leave and new arrivals. I was so anti-Lauren at first because she bailed and was a model that rarely worked until I realized that having models on there is a characteristic of the show. I kind of feel like she was too American for the show though. I have dreams about Oahu every month. Besides the creeping anxiety of a NK attack, living there was the best. I could die there.

I don't know what this hot pot sergeant is. We had an electric wok growing up that we would do shabu shabu/sukiyaki once a week. Assuming it's that?

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:48 (six years ago) link

Oh, I finally found it while googling. That is a good phrase. I wish I had an electric wok.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:51 (six years ago) link

Didn't a few people leave and get replaced before Lauren, though?
Mizuki was another of my favorites. I liked Lauren too. I guess there were very few members I disliked, and even then it wasn't really strong dislike.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 01:58 (six years ago) link

I think only Uke left before her. I love her now for all her awkwardness. And she is the most model-y. I actively disliked Cheri. There were some that I found boring or just a bad fit but I didn't dislike them.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:01 (six years ago) link

I think I was confused about people being labeled "models". But I watched Tokyo idols and was in Japan for 3 weeks and then it all made sense.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:03 (six years ago) link

I think Naomi and Eric also left before Lauren.
Pushiness is one of my least favorite qualities in reality show personalities, so I was more put off by Anna (with her needling Avian about Yuya) and some of Taishi's moments, but I didn't dislike them. Some of the members seemed to not do much, or not much the producers wanted to show.
On Boys and Girls in the City, Tap and Natsumi bugged me, but they also had their more sympathetic and likable moments.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:11 (six years ago) link

Aloha State's main problem was that the Japanese natives could only stay so long in Hawaii before their visas ran out so you were stuck with a bunch of unlikeable castings of hapas & hafus incessantly pumping their brand. The end of Aloha State (Cheri/Wez/Anna & Eric's returns) was such a complete slog of pointless drama...

...except the last dude with the hazel eyes who was barely there for a minute who took a trip to the big island to tour that hippy Kona coffee plantation, that was so awesome and I wish they had just done things like that the whole time.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:26 (six years ago) link

The timing seemed off. Some of those people were barely there.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:33 (six years ago) link

And I had totally forgotten about Naomi. Eric I never understood why he was cast. Too sunburnt and tired for living in Hawaii full time. Anna was just an interesting, smiley mess. Ugh, so many blah people on Aloha comparatively. (Wez LOL!) The only thing that saved it was the scenery, Guy, the hosts making fun of Guy and the unlikely pairing of Avian and Yuya (in that order).

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:37 (six years ago) link

I liked Natsumi, because she was kind of crazy/conflicted. Her being drunk kind of scared me...but only scared me if I was a japanese person.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:41 (six years ago) link

Oh gah, i meant to say Anna was an UN-interesting, smiley mess. I felt a little bad for her at the end with Wez.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:42 (six years ago) link

Something that isn't addressed enough: The panel makes this show and was the only reason I felt compelled to slog on with Aloha State. I have deep love for Tokui, You, Yama... I liked Tori & Baba more in the B&G Next Door/B&G In The City, seems like they're given a rough edit and less screen-time in the past two series.

Also: If you guys didn't know this, you can simultaneously watch the panel's LIVE COMMENTARY (almost like a director's cut) on the JP Netflix site and it's even more hilarious (sometimes the editors will cue back to it for the benefit of the folks who don't watch it that way). There's also tons of BTS clips on the TH Youtube channel (which is region locked so you need a VPN).

Natsumi was kinda crazy, she was a drinker but there are a ton of folks on TH who enjoyed alcohol without starting fights that had to be broken up by the production crew.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:47 (six years ago) link

I kind of identified the most with Natsumi. Something about her inability to filter herself and how she instantly turns hostile when she feels like she's been slighted. That was the funnest stretch of the show.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 02:56 (six years ago) link

I could relate so much to Minori's reaction to Natsumi. I hate being around that kind of person. Minori ended up handling it way better than I would have though.
Totally agree about the panel.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

The fact that one of the first points of drama in the new season is about whether a breakfast soup is too flavourless is perfect Terrace House.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:11 (six years ago) link

In real life I would never be friends with Natsumi, but for tv she had a very strange combination of being early 20s scary, not subtle, slightly charming and too pretty to have to pull all that obvious shit while being Japanese! Her interactions with Minori were the only things to make me like Minori more. Ugh, I know why they can't but I really wish there was only one version of netflix. My version is bonkers. Some shows I can't get english subtitles and some all of a sudden switch overdubs when a season flips.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:13 (six years ago) link

Those three!!!... were all kind of terrible in their own way, but better than most of Aloha.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

what's the deal with people being models? A Japanese thing?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:15 (six years ago) link

I don't fully understand it. A lot may be just weird reality show/unemployed/aspirational/attractive person labeling. But Japan has an idol culture that is unique and is tangential. Google it. I kind of hate what it represents but if it keeps lonely, insecure men from doing bad shit, great.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:25 (six years ago) link

ah yes, ok. I heard about this idols thing.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Seeing Riko go through the process of it was interesting. It got very real at one point when we see her in tears after a photo session.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 03:30 (six years ago) link

Wow, this thread took off while I was asleep!

I’m four episodes in to the new season so far and have a few predictions in the way of big twists, but I would be equally happy if it just turned out to be that Yuudai can finally make a flavoursome-enough mizutaki.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:09 (six years ago) link

That picture upthread is a tableau I would want on my wall.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:10 (six years ago) link

I figured they often have models in because a) people like watching attractive people on TV, and b) models are likely to benefit professionally from a show like this. But is there a hidden reason I’m missing? There are also a ton of people there ‘starting a brand’, which is usually snuck in the narrative around their third day of being there.

Albert R. Broccoli seems to have the inside scoop! So cool that you’ve actually met some of them haha. Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 09:15 (six years ago) link

I think it's also me being a jerk where I am stuck on western ideas of runway or editorial models. I was critical of Minori being a model and really wanted her to pick a more interesting thing to do.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 11:26 (six years ago) link

I got the sense that Minori was more like a fashion model whereas Riko was an idol. Minori seemed to be doing mainly fashion shoots, while for Riko the fandom aspect was fundamental.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:15 (six years ago) link

I don't want to get all Tyra here but it was having to rethink the models as ones doing catalogue, print ads or hostess type of work instead of runway/high fashion. But I don't read asian magazines so maybe they were high fashion? Riko made me sad. She seemed very smart and it all just ended poorly on the show.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

Minori just got married to Keigo Uetake (a streetwear designer dude) over the holidays:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BfVYYRIBQ9A/ (keep swiping to see pics)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:10 (six years ago) link

Riko was a gravure idol which is kind of like a "sexy-cute" bikini model, totally different uh... target market than a runway model. The exposure of the depth of the Riko/Hayato affair was one of the highlights of the Tokyo series imho. The editing around the dinner table catching their glances once the group let them know the jig was up was priceless!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:20 (six years ago) link

Also I had no idea producers got involved with a Natsumi fight!

― tangenttangent, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 2:15 AM (nine hours ago)

Yeah, they mentioned either on the commentary or alluded to the panel discussion where the directors/editors made the call NOT to show the fight between Misaki and Natsumi because it could have negative effect on Natsumi's career. But yeah, they said it got pretty savage and that all the guys and crew had to get involved!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

xpost Not talking about Riko being a model (sorry that was unclear) but all the other women, Minori, Natsumi, Lauren etc.

I enjoyed the discovery of the affair at the end but still was kind of sad. Hayato was shady shady. I liked how at the very beginning the other women thought he was gross.

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

Hayato seemed like a creep. I loved Ryota Yamasato's comment about him on his first episode.
I am curious about if any TH couples are still together.

MrDasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

That was a crazy twist. I remember after the yukata date having the feeling that there was something not right about how they were interacting.

jmm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

Also Riko's Mom knew all along, so if you watch knowing that, it's super apparent and pretty funny. I think Hayato is not as terrible as people make him out to be, and if you follow along with the alumni, he's super popular with both all the guys & gals and apparently still a pretty good chef according to friends.

Minori does runway & print, Natsumi does TV & print, Lauren does tons of print work, she was all over on my last trip.

One edit about Lauren that didn't make it out was that she spent every summer in high school doing modeling (print) in Tokyo. I think her edit just made it seem like she had only done a foreign exchange semester abroad in Hiroshima.

The first series in Shonan (B&G Next Door) has some legit models, actors, musicians, talent, athletes & entertainers, much higher profile than any of the subsequent seasons.

When I first started watching TH Aloha for some reason I my netflix didn't have english subtitles available and I was trying to follow along in Spanish subtitles. So I always fast forwarded all of the panel parts. All of a sudden I got english subtitles and the panel was a revelation.

I find it quite creepy tbh.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:38 (six years ago) link

This season is kind of crazy... A lot of weird tensions flying around and reactions that just seem off-kilter. I thought I had some decent predictions lined up but now I’m not so sure... Money’s on something dramatic happening with either Yuudai or Tsubasa though. My OWN money that is.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:39 (six years ago) link

I find it quite creepy tbh

The whole show or the presenters? I’m sure either way it’s a fair comment in some regards.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:40 (six years ago) link

Driving me crazy that I can't watch until this weekend (houseguest).

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:41 (six years ago) link

Always knew there was more to that Natsumi/Misaki fight. Misaki seemed terrified for a while afterwards until Byrnes arrived on the scene, aaww. It would be nice if they stayed together! Minori and her new husband look very sweet together.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:43 (six years ago) link

That must be hard. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum. I should really be writing an essay this week anyway...

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:45 (six years ago) link

My spouse (and houseguest) walked in and I was watching Greatest Homes or whatever that new show is called, and he saw the reflection in the window and started chastising me for watching TH without him. He just saw people sitting down in a living room and thought it was the new one.

Minori's and new husband look great/happy in the pics.

Yerac, Thursday, 15 March 2018 00:53 (six years ago) link

Do the producers of the show prod people to leave if they get boring or is it really strictly up to the person?

40 episodes.

And Ryo totally had a gf outside of the house right?

you sir, are no Hansan.

Yerac, Monday, 13 April 2020 15:08 (four years ago) link

They've filmed at least a month more, based on people who saw the cast still filming scenes outside the house in mid-March, but I guess we won't see it. I expect this season will not continue even after they can film again. Shame, because I liked the direction things were going in episode 40

Vinnie, Thursday, 16 April 2020 14:14 (four years ago) link

I want to discuss this conspiracy about Ryo and Emika but maybe it's addressed in the next four episodes that I need to watch.

apparently Kai had 'stans'

I'm not going to post precisely what I want to post because I'd be doing exactly what they did in the other direction, and I don't think Kai is in a particularly happy or secure place himself, but it really doesn't surprise me that (given they existed, which is itself fairly shocking to me) his fans, taking into account his comedic style, would have been viciously toxic

JFC that was the most harrowing episode ever. There's no way the rest of the house will be the same from here on out.

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, March 30, 2020 8:50 PM (one month ago)

I just can't see the series going on from this, the whole format, the whole loss of innocence, the whole kayfabe/reality balance which was just delicate enough to begin with, now collapsing in today's social media dominated society.

One thing that gives me a little comfort is the Another Terrace (Behind The Scenes) clips from that episode where her housemates were trying to help Hana through her anger. It left me with a little more hope.

But yeah, I just can't see how the show could ever recover from this. Gah. RIP Hana.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

well, the show was about to wrap for an undetermined amount of time anyway...

re: kai stans - if i were to guess, there’s probably a healthy bit of toxic guys that didn’t like a strong, forceful woman in the mix too

this is all so sad

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Saturday, 23 May 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah, sorry for not being clear, I mean like the entirety of the Terrace House franchise will not be able to recover from this.

If you compare the Hana x Kai drama to an early conflict: Misaki & Natsumi in BGitC. It was revealed that the producers/editors made a conscious decision to edit their fight off the show, because it was so ugly and it could possibly have an effect on both talent's careers.

But then Aloha State happened which led to the combination of Cheri/Wez/Taishi that the producers/editors allowed us to view pure toxicity.

But the Kai x Hana episode was just soooo terrible on all sides, just a bitter stain that would be unlikely to wash away. What was once marketed as a boring, innocent, or however else the show was targeted to the West... that show is long gone.

Oh well, I strongly recommend people hunting down BGND, I feel like that was the pure essence of the franchise, where things were less contrived.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 May 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

Without having seen the other seasons except BGND, I agree this casts doubt on the premise of the show being a good idea

Vinnie, Sunday, 24 May 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

Apparently Cheri is full-on QAnon, probably not a huge surprise but she's off the rails.
