Oh wow, I just read the summaries for season 2 epis of Opening New Doors. WINE!

Yerac, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 21:01 (six years ago) link

The first 3 eps of S2 are on Terrible House, and you should definitely watch them, huge bombshell!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 21:36 (six years ago) link

Yeh, that is what I was just reading. I was so confused for a second.

Yerac, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 21:40 (six years ago) link

when should we expect them in europe?

||||||||, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 21:42 (six years ago) link

would definitely recommend watching BGND before watching season 2 of OND

klu, Thursday, 22 March 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

yuki getting swerved for costco was so painful

||||||||, Thursday, 22 March 2018 11:08 (six years ago) link

why do the panellists continually hold their hands up over their mouths ? mostly when laughing, but sometimes when speaking too. is it a modesty thing? or are they embarrassed by their teeth ? I thought it was just the women who do it but I've noticed yokui doing it too

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

Only the Tokyo panelists do, you'll notice the Kansai ones don't (Baba-chan & Tokui). It's a regional thing.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

that's interesting. I thought yokui was from kansai? I thought I'd picked up on that when they were doing all the (very opaque) riffing on natsumi's accent

also why is tsubasa so lovely

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:40 (six years ago) link

Tokui does a lot of impressions of the team members, maybe that's why? He has a distinguishable Kyoto accent and Babachan has a thick Osaka accent. When they laugh, they show their tongue and inside of their mouth which most stereotypical Tokyo people think is uncivilized.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:00 (six years ago) link

The new season Tsubasa and Taka-san have these crazy mountain accents and speak in dialect to each other that's pretty country but cool. I think the panel made fun of Taka and his bro's radio station where they speak almost exclusively in dialect.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

thanks. all the kansai accent ribbing directed at natsumi in the first series was fully impenetrable to me (still absolutely hilarious for some reason) (I guess regional accent ribbing is universal, and there are archetypes across the world even if you don't know the specific specifics in question)

I've watched S02E10 now and don't really get the significance of the twist but I gather things might get /interesting/ now

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

Are y'all going to be talking about stuff that isn't on Netflix yet? Not sure whether to avoid the thread.

jmm, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

I don't think we should. as soon as it's up on netflix, it's fair game. sorry, I tried to keep my ref oblique (someone had already referred to it upthread as 'a twist')

||||||||, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link

So what was the deal with Cheri anyway? Was she just partying way too hard and flipped out?

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 20:58 (six years ago) link

I won't post any spoilers for the new season, but I can't make any promises about the earlier seasons!

Cheri slowly melted down into an alcoholic haze until she was confronted about a few things and then got incredibly defensive (and offensive to Mariko). Pretty immature and trashy for your typical TH member. She's also a Trump supporter and 2nd ammendment nut.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link

OMG, are you kidding me. I saw that after the show she still won Miss Ala Moana and was surprised. She kind of had hard drug bloat/paralysis going on with her face that I had no clue what was going on.

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:34 (six years ago) link

I always get jolted when I meet a Hawaiian Trump supporter (early last year). But the whole sovereignty/ religious thing it kind of made sense.

Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

Yeah, her voice became more and more gravelly as well... Hopefully she detoxed.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:38 (six years ago) link

I'm watching those exact Cheri episodes now, and they're interesting to watch knowing all of that. It seems like the alcohol problem is being constantly alluded to without ever being explicitly mentioned (Wez: "I think we all need to be more honest.") The confrontation with Mariko and Taishi seems to come out of nowhere. They're fighting about these secondary issues of who said what to whom, without ever getting at the real problem. Maybe they didn't feel they could do it on camera.

jmm, Saturday, 24 March 2018 14:01 (six years ago) link

I feel like my japanese becomes so much better when I watch the show. And I only know maybe 10 japanese words.

Yerac, Sunday, 25 March 2018 20:43 (six years ago) link

rough when hansan leaves. the panel is amazing tho

||||||||, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 20:59 (six years ago) link

I am watching the very first series. I like it but am very sad that there is no panel. And the music is jarring (Taylor Swift!)

Yerac, Tuesday, 3 April 2018 21:38 (six years ago) link

SPOILER: All the original Japanese releases of Terrace House have Taylor Swift as the opening song. They chose to change the music to generic youtube pop for the international release.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 23:20 (six years ago) link

things I have learned about japan from TH: japanese people are obsessed with goals and dreams; japanese people only eat hamburgers; japanese people are absolutely filthy XXX-rated

||||||||, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

I heard the song used in the intro for US TH releases in the trailer for a new Netflix movie "Happy Anniversary." That was weird.

Yerac, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

started watching B&GND yesterday and wow the first season is realy different

, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:13 (six years ago) link

Hamburg steak. Slightly different:

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:32 (six years ago) link

I started watching Boys and Girls in the City. It’s so awkward! Does it get less cringey?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 13 April 2018 03:40 (six years ago) link

I feel like every season starts out a little rough. Tap is super cringey.

Yerac, Friday, 13 April 2018 15:01 (six years ago) link

Apologies, but can someone explain "breakup caused by meat!"? is it related to hamburg steak?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 13 April 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

It's from an incident in Boys and Girls in the City. Uchi is given some expensive wagyu beef by one of his clients. His girlfriend Minori doesn't realize how important this is to him, and she and the other housemates cook it up without asking his permission. He gets very upset with her. The presenters thinks that breaking up over meat is the funniest thing ever.

jmm, Friday, 13 April 2018 17:59 (six years ago) link

And it was a multi episode storyline. I was on Uchi's side although I don't know if they had rules for food in the house.

Yerac, Friday, 13 April 2018 18:01 (six years ago) link

i agree; that is the funniest thing ever!

Philip Nunez, Friday, 13 April 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

was fkn shady eating the meat tbf. uchi had every right to be raging

why has terrible house not uploaded any more new epis recently?

||||||||, Friday, 13 April 2018 18:12 (six years ago) link

arman owns. I mean he’s a boring bastard but who isn’t.

||||||||, Friday, 13 April 2018 19:42 (six years ago) link

We were surprised that the panel didn't think that the meat eating was a big deal.

I think Arman is great.

Yerac, Friday, 13 April 2018 21:54 (six years ago) link

I watch one season of Terrace House and now I'm being solely recommended things in Japanese.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Sunday, 22 April 2018 23:52 (six years ago) link

I put Ainori Love Wagon on my list. Hoping it will be as good as TH.

I like how The Cut is now doing TH episode reviews.

Yerac, Monday, 23 April 2018 13:10 (six years ago) link

!! I started watching Ainori Love Wagon pretty much exactly as you posted this. I think it has different charms to Terrace House, but it's too early to say quite how.

i'm still watching part one but i feel like yuudai is being quite badly treated?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 30 April 2018 02:23 (six years ago) link

i think i don't like this show, actually. it's cruel. i don't understand it.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 30 April 2018 02:27 (six years ago) link

I find it very soothing! But I am not in love with the new season yet. Yuudai probably should not have been on the show.

Yerac, Monday, 30 April 2018 02:32 (six years ago) link

^^^^

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 30 April 2018 02:40 (six years ago) link

(It gets better!)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 30 April 2018 02:41 (six years ago) link

Ainori turns out to have been great! The Netflix season does all sorts of lovely (and weird) things, culminating in several jawdropping romances and a busload of drama! And there's a whole fifteen-minute informational segment on LGBT in Thailand - clearly the producers sticking it to stuffy old Japanese sexual politics culture

imago, Monday, 30 April 2018 13:30 (six years ago) link

three weeks pass...

New episodes up. Can we talk about this yet? The vibe has totally changed for the better!

Yerac, Friday, 25 May 2018 13:04 (five years ago) link

I just started the new ones.
Ami is kind of a drain, eh.
But I think I would find Seina overbearing.

MrDasher, Saturday, 26 May 2018 01:03 (five years ago) link

I am also in the middle of watching the very first season of TH so it's weird to simultaneously see the 5 years apart Seina at the same time.

Two things I really laughed at. When Tsubasa? said "hide" when the new person showed up. (I don't know why this made me laugh). And when Seina is asked if she is interested in wine and she said it is her only interest. I kind of want that in a gif.

Yerac, Saturday, 26 May 2018 01:09 (five years ago) link

There aren't very many new episodes! I am about halfway through them.
Seina seems more low key than she did on her first episode and on her appearances on Boys and Girls in the City and Aloha State. The way they have talked about her make her seem like some kind of troublemaker, but that doesn't seem to be th case? And they even said she doesn't fight with other women, which is a relief. What was her deal on her other seasons and the movie?
Regarding Yuudai, I did feel kind of bad for him. He seemed so hapless and I can relate to his avoidant personality, But I don't think I can fault the others for how they were to him. He must have been so annoying and frustrating to deal with, and they probably thought he was just immature, inconsiderate, and oblivious. If there is more to it, I don't think they saw it. It's not really that clear what was going on with him.
Ami doesn't seem to have great social skills, and is maybe kind of oblivious herself, but it was a little obscured by Yuudai's issues. They probably just made each other worse.
I don't really get Tsubasa and Shion.
