OMG WTF

Who did that? Crazy.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:59 (nineteen years ago) link

this girl i know that doesnt like wendy pepper. its hilarious!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

That's messed up. I am not the hugest fan of Wendy Pepper but I don't really have a problem with her, I think her only fault is going meta about being strategic and/or evil in her behavior and explaining it too much. Austin is just insufferable and Kevin is a passive-aggressive nightmare. However, Karasaun, Rob and Jay all seem like super cool people who I'd get along with well. Rob is totally schizophrenic, one week he pulls off something brilliant and the next it's a near disaster. But I wonder if Karasaun's hit her limit this week? Her suit was really meh, and I was pretty surprised by that.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i think being a two-faced bitch ranks pretty high in my book. for a while, i was into her but after all her "this is my last chance" speeches and stuff, i dont think she has what it takes to win.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

No, she won't win. I'm just saying, she really doesn't strike me as all that bad - Jay says completely rude things but does it with such charm that he gets away with it, while Austin is phony and childish but seems to get a pass for being interesting. I mean, I've only seen her being bitchy/two-faced to people who kind of deserve it, ie Austin, Vanessa (who was rather testy & difficult) - though if she turns around and stabs Karasaun in the back I'll reconsider my opinion of her.

Maybe I'm indulging my contrarian impulses here; I was reading the Television Without Pity board on Project Runway and there are all these smug women ripping "the Pepper" up one side and down the other for being bitchy, frumpy, and overweight - all while these same people are being incredibly bitchy themselves and complaining that Banana Republic doesn't make plus sizes (ie larger than a 16!).

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

In other words I think Wendy Pepper's greatest sin is being a fairly level-headed middle-aged woman who doesn't look like an aging supermodel. For this, she is edited into the villain's role.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Daria OTM re Wendy.

I'm just catching up on this show after watching a marathon of reruns the other night, but now it's my favorite show ever.

I'm wondering how much influence the producers have in who gets the boot. There's a blurb about that in the credits. Do the Weinsteins really make the choices? I'm guessing they'll keep the 2 flamboyant guys to the end for their TV appeal.

That one who compared women to sports cars is not a very good designer and not all that TVgenic. I'm surprised he hasn't gone yet.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, Rob? He's quite telegenic, I think! I really get a kick out of him, and I'm a feminazi. He has these horrendous walking-cliche-sexist-pig tendencies but he can't bring himself to just take that ball and run with it. Thus nobody takes him seriously, and it's incredibly funny and entertaining.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i dont care if she's frumpy or overweight [hey, i am too]. i just have issues with the two-faced behavior of hers. i would not be surprised if she started in with kara. ive dealt with this type of person numerous times through art school and beyond. somewhere down the line, they screw themselves over.

ive found wendy's work to be fairly uninteresting throughout the series. her only win was uncaptivating [yet its inherent boringness was perfect for the banana republic line] and with each challenge, she does something wrong.

i am very surprised she was not eliminated last night -- a missing part on a swimsuit is a huge error. in my experience as a freelance graphic designer / photographer, omitting something clearly integral to the project would cost me my job.

also, for someone who's incoming portfolio appeared to be nothing but formalwear, i was totally non-plussed by her wedding gown. tim was 100% correct in his assessment of her inability to work with asymmetry.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Wendy pepper's greatest sin is HAVING NO TALENT.

btw, note the loosened tie:

puke.

ade (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, he is foul. What's more, he revels in it, because that's all he is good for. I would like for Jarvis Cocker to go everywhere he goes, so that this guy would always look like a hideous, lame, uninteresting loser. Alternately, I would like for this guy to be marooned on a desert island with only Peggy Noonan for company.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

My fantasy final three:
Jay (I'm a guy and *I* would even wear his damn clothes.I hope he wins)
Kara Saun (I love the polished look of her clothes, the military dress was gorgeous)
Nora (Her lawn chair dress was genius, too bad she's a crybaby loser and let that kid get her kicked off the show)

Austin is gross, his Yves Saint Laurent impression was off-putting from the start. I'm surprised noone called him out on that, I mean the glasses and the hair....c'mon, it's so obvious who he's imitating!
And his clothes are a bit too costumey.....love his makeup though.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Uh, which one, Phil?

Can't wait for next week. POST OFFICE UNIFORMS!!!! Who are the powers that be behind this show and what are they smoking? I love them!!! I love them even more for making the designers dress up in post office uniforms! Genius!

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:12 (nineteen years ago) link

what happened this week?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, more insanity.. They had to do a group collection with each designer's piece fitting in to the theme, and the theme was the year 2055 (FUTURE PEOPLE!) and Kevin was chosen as the leader. Not Kevin's strong suit. They get materials from a vintage store, people bitch about each other, Wendy backstabs, people wonder what planet Rob is on, Kara produces something totally genius & beautiful once again, Jay continues fussing and yelling like a child, etc. Should I ruin the ending for you or not?

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago) link

please do. don't. please don't do. don't please. don't not do please.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Robert's explanation of his design reminded me of when homer explained his redesign of the nuclear plant on the simpsons - "these fins make it more aerodynamic... and this racing stripe is pretty cool."

ade (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

robert is a fucking idiot. at the beginning of the show, i thought, 'what a strikingly handsome guy.' but now all i see is a giant question mark with a shit eating grin slapped across its face.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Kevin was the REAL hottie. :(

ade (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

After this week, surely everyone must agree that Wendy is the WORST. Total cat-string-vomit outfit she designed. Kevin is annoying in his own right, and less talented, but damn, he did a better job leading than Wendy would have. They are both sort of insecure egomaniacs, but he's smarter and more talented than she is...

so the final three are definitely kara, jay and austin, yah?

carly, Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah... but... i that kara saun's outfit was the worst this week... closely followed by wendy.

kara saun's outfit looked like it will be sold in the charlotte rousse's (sp?) of the future...
or a costume for blade 6 or something. euch.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

that should be: i thought that kara saun's...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked Robert's design! I liked it a whole ton and I would definitely wear it. Love the trousers. And the solar panels! They're funny! I don't know, maybe he really isn't very bright, although what I'm seeing is more.. this weird disconnect, in that the other designers seem to think he's just a joker, which is not a bad role to play, while the judges seem to like his work and take it seriously enough. I'm really a fan of being just enjoyably goofy & charming, without the humor always having this angry, bitter, insecure edge to it (a la Jay). And Kevin was way too dour. Also, I really don't like Austin's work, it's so narrow minded and precious. I think Austin should be the one to go after Wendy, actually. When has he made anything that didn't scream "foofy fairy princess"?

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

true... but austin is probably the most technically talented among all of them... i haven't ever really cared for anything he's done, but i am rarely truly unimpressed with it. i agree about its preciousness though. i liked rob's design too, but i was embarassed to see him talk about the solar panels. i think i may actually have blushed on his behalf.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago) link

and i still don't like jay... even though his clothes are getting a lot better

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Solar panels, again.. I thought it was a great idea. They're amusing. They don't have to literally do anything! I mean, I have jackets with all sorts of unnecessary cuffs and buttons and epaulets and fake pockets and things, why not fake solar panels? They look cool, and the idea of being hopped up on solar energy all the time is funny and inspiring. I don't see it as any more or less eccentric than printing a message on a T-shirt.

Vanessa Riley interview! http://www.popgurls.com/article_show.php3?id=529

And yeah, OK, Austin is talented, but the clothes make me want to barf. For me, Austin Scarlett is kind of like the Amélie movie - all these people are like "oohlala! I just love love love my happy fairy tale with the pretty foofy princess!" and I'm like "OMG THIS IS TEH SUCK" and then people hate me.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Man, I am sad! At least I got to watch this instead of the State of the Union.

The producers are keeping the evil Pepper around, it's too obvious. Her outfit was the worst by far. arrrgh.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:22 (nineteen years ago) link

She'll go next week. It's so obvious who will be final 3.

I bet ya 100 bucks that Kevin is the one who drew on Wendy's photo.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I figured it was either Kevin or Wendy herself. Probably Kevin, though. I don't like him at all.

Tim on Austin: Little Lord Fauntleroy 2005

Hahaha. I wish they hadn't ditched Rob. He makes me laugh, dammit! Oh well. "Reality" TV. Wendy's outfit was teh suck. Don't get me wrong, Austin's and Robert's were plenty lame too, but not as lame.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Wendy fucking pepper, jesus

Monday At Bernie's (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah. I'm annoyed. I guess what annoys me most is the totally obvious gears-turning producer-interference aspect of reality TV which means they kind of had to keep Wendy around for the drama, because there's no way her outfit wasn't worse than Rob's this week. And Austin has a fan base and I know he's obviously talented, but his talent is for making stuff that completely SUCKS! At least Rob knows how to make a good pair of trousers. Sheesh.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I feel sorry for Wendy. She's so out of place, out of her league. Makes you wonder how she even got on the show. She was right though in saying Kevin and Austin weren't good leaders. She could have said it more tactfully. She's just lacking personal skills. Did you see how KS hugged everybody but her when she found out she won the challenge? And how Rob was looking for some interaction from her stone face when it was just them left on the runway? She just doesn't know how to act.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, she is out of place. Arrgh. I know the show doesn't have to make sense in the parameters, but I was baffled this week b/c usually the rule has been, if you don't respond to the challenge you're out. Which is why last week Wendy's bad deconstruction beat out Kevin's non-deconstruction - but this week she didn't listen to the fashion part of the challenge at all, and still wasn't kicked off! Just silly.

What I noticed in the not knowing how to act.. when Karasaun set up a meeting so they'd all be able to explain themselves well on the runway, Wendy disrupted things continually laughing at the 'pseudo-intellectual crap' everyone was saying. But it's part of the game. I think, at the end of the day, she hates the fashion world and all the pretty people who live there, and yet is fascinated by it and seeks some kind of validation.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:54 (nineteen years ago) link

OTM. She thinks if she makes it to fashion week, she'll finally be cool.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:04 (nineteen years ago) link

"You're like a cockroach!" Jay said it twice even.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Hah! That was so bad. I like Jay. He needs to stop shooting himself in the foot and just go along with the BS game, because I think this opportunity could be huge for him. In fact I hope he wins, though somehow I'm not feeling like it'll happen. I think Karasaun is too good to still be on this show instead of starting her own line. Maybe they should let Wendy win, because Karasaun and Jay would have to un-learn whatever the Banana Republic (eek!) people might try to teach them. Or maybe Austin should win, because the BR people and their budget would force him to cut down on the foof.

Austin Scarlett revealed

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i think wendy was really handed a dagger and prompted to kill with the kevin leader episode tho. granted, she has no imagination.... although, corporate america generally has very little as well. as bland as her USPS design was... just like her banana republic design... she can copy/alter just enough for some middle management schmuck to get behind her and make a safe non-changing change legacy move in a company. i could see how she could sorta half-survive sorta...

jay is totally cool and has been my fave personality-wise for many episodes, but karasaun wins hands down design-wise tho. austin's a hoot in a cariacature sort of way. rob seems vacant on skills, but manages to charm them with a pitch that seems pretty empty too... "penis envy"? "a woman is like a sport car?" ... let me see if i can try... "a designer is like a bad cologne commercial?"

m.

msp (msp), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

it just seems like karasaun is just an elegant and talented person, and all that beauty just shines through in her personality and her designs,
and wendy is a horrible and evil troll, inside and out, who is nonetheless always eager to show herself to be more ugly, in design and in her would-be machiavellian reality-show persona.

ugh...
robert may have skirted by week after week on finite talent, but his reaction to being eliminated was totally classic (and classy). he actually did enjoy himself, i think, and realized his own inadequacies.
i imagine wendy will just be ungrateful and ugly when she loses next week, and she will have wasted this entire time with her negativity and poison.

carly, Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Jay is a trip.. on one hand I think he ought to take the angry/bitter punk rock edge off a little, but on the other, I wonder if that might be the most essential part of his design. Karasaun is the best by far and I'm loving the way she manages to make it real clear who she dislikes and doesn't respect, but in a way that's totally classy and unimpeachable. Ie her reaction to winning this week & walking right past Wendy with just a nod.

I realized in the last episode that Rob reminds me of an old friend who I haven't seen in a while and miss quite a lot - a bright, good-looking, utterly charming guy who nevertheless provoked plenty of OMGWTFLOL reactions & wondering what planet he lived on. I still think he's not untalented, just scatterbrained and too willing to coast as far as possible on charm. Also, yeah, I think it has been clear for a while who the top 3 designers really are - and it was better to be positive and enjoy the opportunity instead of (a la Wendy) taking it as a signal to manipulate and backstab your way to the finals in order to compensate for a lesser talent. It's really nice to see somebody who isn't all complexé about not being the best.

The goofy camraderie among four of the last five, the whole dynamic is a lot like this house where I lived a couple years ago. Awww. We threw some great parties.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

these people have reminded me of people i hang out with a lot more than any other reality tv show i've ever seen. that's how i got hooked a lot quicker i think. the art student vibe maybe? that's who i hung out with in college mostly. well, creativity >>>>> physical challenges, etc.

otm on wendy you two. maybe i was giving her the benefit of the doubt, but i think you guys prove a good point. you'd think she would salvage her image a little and go out gracefully. hello reruns! who wants to be known for even 15 minutes as a freak?
m.

msp (msp), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think that's what hooked me from episode 1. I was like, hello liberal arts undergrad! not to mention wacky international grad student housemates. Mario, Nora, Rob, Jay, Kara, Austin, and even Starr all could fit right in with people I hang out with.

ten years and they are all married with kids and buying houses in the suburbs, right?

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i think they seem like people we hang out with, because they seem more like people than contestants on other shows. even where they are caricatures and even where they are personalities i wouldn't like - they don't get to assume a persona the way apprentice/real world/elimidate characters do. because of the challenges, they have to spend most of the show stripped down to themselves, their talent. so we do get a more honest portrayel of these people as real live humans, with flaws that we believe and accept (except for wendy, whose honest self when stripped down is really unpleasant, with little to redeem her, at least in what bravo has shown us...)

i also like that even though there were bad decisions made along the way - some of the eliminations made little sense - i feel like the final three are the proper final three. i thought alexandra's elimination was dumb, because really, duh, art is imitative, and it's really okay to draw inspiration from prior art (whereas it's not okay to make a bathing suit with no bottom!). and wendy only passed this week for the drama of it, right? but the final three are the right finalists, i believe it in my heart of hearts.

carly, Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"ten years and they are all married with kids and buying houses in the suburbs, right?"

god... yeah... and trying to convince themselves that somehow they aren't doing that the bad way!

msp (msp), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Almost everybody on the Real World seems like they're from another planet! The Apprentice is worse, for that - these humorless, self-serious cutthroat miserable people, I can't figure out how they're even the same age as I.

always weird to see people on tv who are your age who seem so much older. it used to be that child actors really were that much older. not reality shows. sheesh. now i know why the burrito girl calls me "sir" cause i'm evidentally a man now. wtf? no memo on that?
