xp I can't stand Izzard, but nothing he said there seems at all objectionable? This is exactly the same line that Corbyn has taken in his recent statements:

"This is a very important time for the Labour Party and we must stamp out completely the stain of anti-Semitism from a minority of members. It has no place in our party," Mr Izzard said.

"We must make amends and repair the damage with the Jewish community as Jeremy Corbyn has promised to do."

soref, Sunday, 1 April 2018 16:57 (six years ago) link

He's objectionable.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Sunday, 1 April 2018 16:59 (six years ago) link

And now, having already been responsible for Brexit, he's going to be everywhere all the time.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Sunday, 1 April 2018 17:00 (six years ago) link

true, but if he is going to be getting interviewed on tv etc then I'd rather have him take that line on anti-semitism than any other

soref, Sunday, 1 April 2018 17:01 (six years ago) link

But obviously we don't care what his line is on anti-semitism or anything else.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Sunday, 1 April 2018 17:04 (six years ago) link

I’ve seen a lot of confirmation bias about either Corbyn or present-day Labour that comes from places of relative privilege or so-called ‘adults in the room’ - a few were white guys dragging Diane Abbott before the election in such a vituperative way, I thought her seat was in danger but they showed unexamined racial bias in their attitudes to her. The result told me these guys just had loud voices and the expectation that they should get their way all the damned time. That’s not to diminish in any way the toxicity of conspiracy theorists, but I just don’t associate that impulse with the Left in the way some others do, because it’s in all parties and no parties. It also made me sick to see the BoD accept solidarity from a Paisley and Norman Tebbit on Monday - talk about self-owns, right?

I’m gentile, but grew up in a town with a big Jewish community. It was huge because other suburbs bordering had covenants not to sell homes to Jewish families right through 1968. The people I grew up with were not a monolith and it has always concerned me to see people lazily reference ‘the Jewish lobby’ or say ‘Jewish people think X’. Every so often some other gentile would ask why I was in school on a high holiday, because of my dark hair and class rank, but that was the worst stereotype anyone I grew up with would bust out in public. The I/P arguments there were always between Jewish people on the rare occasions they happened.

More later - I am trying to flesh out some thoughts in a week that has been personally harrowing for me for other reasons.

suzy, Sunday, 1 April 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

I think the Victor Klemperer dairies should be taught in schools tbh. Apropos of nothing perhaps, but this is the new all purpose antisemitic thread, after all.

calzino, Sunday, 1 April 2018 21:10 (six years ago) link

within his dairies is a narrative almost similar to being a fresh Syrian refugee in the UK rn tbh. As in a feeling of becoming considered less than human and worrying where that will lead in the future.

calzino, Sunday, 1 April 2018 21:19 (six years ago) link

Feel like I've seen this photo of Corbyn, and only this photo, on various papers & sites the past week.
https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article12265539.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Anti-semitism-in-Labour.jpg
Of course it is a crucial hatless photo (repeat, hatless).

gyac, Sunday, 1 April 2018 22:23 (six years ago) link

it's depressing that there are so few Labour MPs that support Corbyn and the left, and even more depressing that this utter waste of space is one of them

In the midst of the crisis over #LabourAntisemitism, here comes @DerbyChrisW to the rescue. A short thread on why he needs to have the whip removed.
First he retweets Scott Nelson. (again)
He's been told who he is. (many times) so he gets pulled up on it. pic.twitter.com/TsRVWzTqnx

Chris Williamson is an absolute arse, he will probably end up writing for The Canary when he finally gets fucked off.

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 12:09 (six years ago) link

whenever he shits his pants you get the usual "one of Corbyn's closest allies". he really needs to get shut.

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 12:11 (six years ago) link

this is different from Williamson's idiocy, but I guess you could file them both under the heading of 'Labour MPs being incautious on twitter' (unless Shah is somehow unaware of the context here?)

I'd guess Naz doesn't understand the Necklacing context or can't remember poor Stompie, otherwise she might have erred towards caution there!

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:04 (six years ago) link

how could you post that quote without being curious about the context, i don't buy it. i don't really care either, but if you actually want to be an MP and play along in celebrity parliament this is a poor move.

Good hustle if you can get into it.

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:15 (six years ago) link

xp yeah, I don't mean to suggest that it's actively harmful like Williamson's apologetics for anti-semitism are, but what is the upside to posting that

looks like the tweet has now been deleted and replaced by one that doesn't include the 'matches and necklaces' quote anyway

soref, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:17 (six years ago) link

i think it's a testament to MPs' characters that voting to kill the poor drives them to drink

"you know abstaining from Welfare Bill votes is really hungry work for a left-winger like me..."

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

The 'London now has more murders than New York' story doing the rounds really is laughable pro-Tory propaganda ahead of the elections. But perhaps it will 'work'.

nashwan, Monday, 2 April 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

Corbyn nearly won the election by hammering the point home about police cuts by T. May costing the public dearly.

I know anything involving Lilico is fish-in-a-barrel stuff, but this is amazing, he might as well have included the expanding brain meme picture himself to save time

soref, Monday, 2 April 2018 19:30 (six years ago) link

Not familiar with Andrew Lilico - Is this nonsense part of the old "we mostly like people like us, and if the arabs and orientals are sending their kids to the right schools then we'll grudgingly accept them" thing or is he a fucking idiot, or both?

In August 2011, Tory Dover councillor Bob Frost described people involved in the riots as
“jungle bunnies”.
He lost his job as a Maths teacher, but the Conservative Party only suspended him for two months,
readmitting him in November 2011.
13
In 2014, he referred to the prospective Middle Eastern buyers of Dover port as “sons of camel
drivers”
14
. No disciplinary action was taken and Tory MP Charlie Elphicke defended him, saying
“I think the Labour Party is trying to victimise Cllr Frost.”
In May 2015, Cllr Frost was in trouble again for tweeting that a Big Issue seller should "f**k off
back to Romania".
He was suspended pending investigation.

A Labour MP has apologised for making "deeply offensive" racist and homophobic remarks at a Burns Night celebration.

Hugh Gaffney said he would attend equality and diversity training following the revelation he joked about Scottish poet Robert Burns being "bent".

Giving the traditional 'Immortal Memory' at a Scottish Labour students event on Saturday, Mr Gaffney claimed Burns told "lads and lassies he was not bent".

He also laughed about being at home and eating a "chinky".

tbh the pov that Lolico expresses there is implicit in a lot of the right-wing takes on anti-semitism in Labour, so I guess kudos to him for actually coming out and saying it explicitly therefore showing how ridiculous it is?

soref, Monday, 2 April 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

saying the quiet part loud is like lilico's superpower

"In April 2016, Tory peer Baroness Warsi wrote, in relation to the London mayoral campaign of
Zac Goldsmith, “the right needs to weed out its Islamophobes ... Dog-whistle nasty politics is
damaging the UK"

Warsi never managed to get ahead, she didn't learn to be a quiet 2nd gen Asian Tory when racist dog-whistle was used. I mean she is probably a quite right wing and small c Con, but that's not nasty enough for this lot.

calzino, Monday, 2 April 2018 21:23 (six years ago) link

My ideal Bear Grylls series would be one where the cunt is exiled to live on a big council estate with multiple crime gangs, and rapidly the word is put out that he is both a police informer and a paedo.

Just reading an article on The Charnel House and this part stood out
https://thecharnelhouse.org/2018/03/26/antisemitism-as-a-blindspot-for-the-left/

"Let me lay my cards on the table: I don’t think that Corbyn is a hardened antisemite or anything like that. Efforts to portray him as such are in my opinion transparently opportunistic. Yet again, this is a manufactured scandal resuscitated several years after the fact for political gain. Worst of all, this is leading people to dislike Corbyn for the wrong reasons. Jez sucks not because he’s “the absolute goy,” as some have pithily put it, but because he’s a milquetoast reformist leading a bourgeois political party, who wants to put more cops on the street and complains that foreigners are stealing British jobs."

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 2 April 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

"no he's not an antisemite he's just another imperialist capitalist pig"

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 2 April 2018 21:44 (six years ago) link

that second part is not a quote btw, just the basic interpretation of what i read, lol

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 2 April 2018 21:45 (six years ago) link

Why anyone would want to support Jeremy Corbyn or join the Labour Party is beyond me. I don’t live in Great Britain

Got this far.

nashwan, Monday, 2 April 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

Unless he is going to come up with an impossibly mesmerising argument for the electorate rallying around Vince Cable, he is pretty fucked after an opening like that!
