Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

No tears from me!

Appropriate, really, that this polling series ended with such a relative whisper. Suits the style of both ladies.

"alt-black" (Pillbox), Thursday, 4 June 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess this means i have to listen to some Elizabeth Fraser?

Surmounter, Friday, 5 June 2009 00:02 (fourteen years ago) link

You mean you haven't heard the Cocteau Twins yet?

Born Again Atheist (Bimble), Friday, 5 June 2009 02:32 (fourteen years ago) link

OH RIGHT

that's something i need to dive into more, i think i might be at the proper stage

so this was like a Cocteau vs. Hersh poll?

Surmounter, Friday, 5 June 2009 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Well I don't think it's quite fair to say that, but Liz hasn't done very much outside of the Cocteaus, just guesting here and there on other people's records, basically.

liz did some work outside of cocteau twins but the only things of real note are the two tracks on the first This Mortal Coil album (which hardly counts) and 'teardrop' on the massive attack album (which is probably her only 'hit')

akm, Friday, 5 June 2009 03:54 (fourteen years ago) link

AND the song "Downside Up" that Peter Gabriel wrote but that she sang as a duet with the singer of the Blue Nile. But I've already talked about that one too much here, I think.

Born Again Atheist (Bimble), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:18 (fourteen years ago) link

And how about those backing vocals on Felt's "Primitive Painters", let's not forget that one!

I don't know how you can say the This Mortal Coil tracks don't count, though - it seems to me more folks are enamored with "Song To The Siren" than they are the Cocteaus and the vocals are all hers on those tracks as well.

Which brings me to wonder - what DID actually happen to that first Liz solo album that was rumored for so long anyway?

Born Again Atheist (Bimble), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Ah well someone will point me to wiki, so it may as well be me...

In December 2006 New Music Express magazine reported that her solo album was due for release in early 2007. The album would have contained eight tracks, one of which is to be a cover version. No titles were announced and the album was never released. Its current status is unknown.

Born Again Atheist (Bimble), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey now, let's not forget that one Medicine remix..

"alt-black" (Pillbox), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:36 (fourteen years ago) link

the only actual solo thing she's properly released is the track on that rough trade 'stop me if you've heard this one before' comp

the ring toun (electricsound), Friday, 5 June 2009 04:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Call yourselves fans! What about her appearances on Dif Juz's "Love Insane," Moose's "Play God," or the Future Sound of London's "Lifeforms"?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 5 June 2009 11:48 (fourteen years ago) link

and that crappy BOM 7"

the ring toun (electricsound), Friday, 5 June 2009 11:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Ah look! A proper list, then, just what we needed. Yeah I thought about that Dif Juz track later, but to be honest I never liked it much.

Born Again Atheist (Bimble), Friday, 5 June 2009 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

'downside up' is crappy despite it's pedigree, like everything else on that OVO record (except for "father son")

akm, Friday, 5 June 2009 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know how you can say the This Mortal Coil tracks don't count, though - it seems to me more folks are enamored with "Song To The Siren" than they are the Cocteaus and the vocals are all hers on those tracks as well.

i meant it barely counted because it's basically cocteau twins, to me.

akm, Friday, 5 June 2009 21:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, I see what you mean.

the only actual solo thing she's properly released is the track on that rough trade 'stop me if you've heard this one before' comp

Yeah I did a poll that included that song, but her cover version came in last in the results, which doesn't really surprise me.
