Two guinea pigs belonging to Sergei Skripal died and his cat was put down after the Salisbury nerve agent attack, the government has revealed.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the dead guinea pigs and a “distressed” cat were discovered when a vet was able to enter Skripal’s home, which had been sealed off during the police investigation. Defra said it believed the guinea pigs had died of thirst.

Does this mean that guinea pigs are immune to military grade nerve agent?

Dunno, but I suspect that the cat knew too much...

Can't help thinking they were real targets of this attack, the poisoining of the Skripals was just a red herring.

A lot of noise about why they didn't notice the pets earlier or send a vet, although I'm guessing they can't just send any old local vet onto the scene of a chemical attack.

In the event of chemical attack make sure any guinea pigs are given adequate refreshments.

maybe there was some confusion about the guinea pig as a term denoting the subject of an experiment.

The implication they're raising is that there was nothing poisonous inside the house, but given that the main theory seems to be that it was applied to an exterior door, you wouldn't expect there to be.

Unless the cats and guinea pigs were in the habit of letting themselves in and out of the house via the front door - using the door knob that is.

The Sun reported that Skripal’s black cat, Nash Van Drake, was put down after being tested at the Ministry of Defence research laboratory at Porton Down, where he was found to be severely malnourished.

A Defra spokeswoman said a decision was taken by a veterinary surgeon to euthanise the cat to alleviate its suffering, and that it was taken in the best interests of the animal and its welfare.

There seems to have been a lot of briefing to the press in recent days about secret assassination manuals and factories producing nerve gas but, in the absence of any public proof, it’s easy for Russia to ask why the UK is giving this to the Daily Mail but withheld it from the OPWC when they were certifying them compliant last year.

Given that 99% of people probably assume it’s Russia anyway, idk why they are continuing the half-baked effort to bolster the case other than to bail Johnson out of an embarrassing situation.
