Does this mean that guinea pigs are immune to military grade nerve agent?

Matt DC, Friday, 6 April 2018 11:04 (six years ago) link

Dunno, but I suspect that the cat knew too much...

Mark G, Friday, 6 April 2018 11:05 (six years ago) link

Can't help thinking they were real targets of this attack, the poisoining of the Skripals was just a red herring.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Friday, 6 April 2018 11:06 (six years ago) link

A lot of noise about why they didn't notice the pets earlier or send a vet, although I'm guessing they can't just send any old local vet onto the scene of a chemical attack.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 April 2018 11:08 (six years ago) link

In the event of chemical attack make sure any guinea pigs are given adequate refreshments.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Friday, 6 April 2018 11:10 (six years ago) link

in the event of a chemical attack tightly strap a guinea pig over your nose and mouth as an impromptu gas mask

maybe there was some confusion about the guinea pig as a term denoting the subject of an experiment.

The story was put out after the Russian Embassy's characteristically trollish tweet earlier in the day:

It turns out Sergey Skripal has two cats and two guinea pigs. Were they also poisoned? Where are they and how are they treated? Important questions for the investigation. Read our comment: https://t.co/T8vwYdz77A pic.twitter.com/J5w3Jpz2I0

The implication they're raising is that there was nothing poisonous inside the house, but given that the main theory seems to be that it was applied to an exterior door, you wouldn't expect there to be.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 6 April 2018 11:31 (six years ago) link

Unless the cats and guinea pigs were in the habit of letting themselves in and out of the house via the front door - using the door knob that is.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Friday, 6 April 2018 11:43 (six years ago) link

Another day, another victim of May's purrsimonious budgeting of the UK police force.

calzino, Friday, 6 April 2018 11:46 (six years ago) link

Some cats are known to be able to open doors. So clearly the Russians are innocent.

TBH the Russians know they can say whatever they want given that everyone knows that Britain's most senior diplomat lies all the fucking time.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 April 2018 11:49 (six years ago) link

The Sun reported that Skripal’s black cat, Nash Van Drake, was put down after being tested at the Ministry of Defence research laboratory at Porton Down, where he was found to be severely malnourished.

A Defra spokeswoman said a decision was taken by a veterinary surgeon to euthanise the cat to alleviate its suffering, and that it was taken in the best interests of the animal and its welfare.

they murder hundreds of guninea pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits on the reg at porton down iirc so lets not have this blubbing about animal welfare. also - nash van drake?!?

The authorities may have given him a pseudonym for security purposes.

All joking aside, this is OTM, plus the Russians do Boris' whole shtick better than he does. This cunt is still our Foreign Secretary btw.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Friday, 6 April 2018 12:17 (six years ago) link

not sure if moscow deserve all the ire for this one tbh, those guinea pigs did die in mysterious circumstances in police custody after all xp

Page 23 of the MI6 handbook says that you should always use your pet’s name as your email password so it makes sense they don’t want it out there.

There seems to have been a lot of briefing to the press in recent days about secret assassination manuals and factories producing nerve gas but, in the absence of any public proof, it’s easy for Russia to ask why the UK is giving this to the Daily Mail but withheld it from the OPWC when they were certifying them compliant last year.

Given that 99% of people probably assume it’s Russia anyway, idk why they are continuing the half-baked effort to bolster the case other than to bail Johnson out of an embarrassing situation.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 6 April 2018 12:21 (six years ago) link

i wonder if i could foi how much public time and money has been spent on trying to bail boris out of embarrassing situations since he became foreign minister

Salisbury hospital has just said Sergei Skripal is no longer in critical condition, so that's some good news.

This is what happens when you buy military grade nerve gas from some guy in a boozer - it's been sitting in a tin in his lockup for God knows how long.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Friday, 6 April 2018 13:02 (six years ago) link

Following the update on Mr Skripal's condition, the Russian Embassy tweeted: "Good news!"

Theresa May, March 26th “their condition is unlikely to change in the near future, and they may never recover fully.”

I realised the other day that I've been to that pub they went to in Salisbury and it would have been a really shitty place to spend the last waking hours of your life.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 April 2018 13:42 (six years ago) link

yeah that's not a great pub despite being by the river

ogmor, Friday, 6 April 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link

Salisbury is one of those places that's half red-faced Tories in tweeds and corduroy, half tattooed blokes looking for fights with (other) squaddies. The pub in question is called the Old Mill and caters for the latter set of clientele IIRC.

Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Friday, 6 April 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

I was in Salisbury last weekend. The Prezzi was still completely shut and guarded by the police. On the up side there was free parking to encourage visitors.

I always wondered why anyone would revive a Cardiacs thread, but having a discreet thread for coded messages makes perfect sense now!
