The Ordinary guy fired his co CEO - her interview here shows how fucking smart this woman is: it’s less an interview and more the perfect cover letter to every high level position in every big-deal up-and-coming beauty company

Truaxe reminds me a bit of Sheela from Wild, Wild Country

just1n3, Monday, 9 April 2018 08:31 (six years ago) link

Started with some 10% glycolic overnight stuff and waiting impatiently for benefits to manifest.

Jaq, Monday, 9 April 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

So the liquid nitrogen didn’t work—my test spot got darker and then just got lighter again (it was supposed to get dark then crusty then fall off). The dermatologist is giving me some cream fro lighten dark spots and recommends a chemical peel. Has anyone ever done this? It’s not covered by insurance and I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 April 2018 22:07 (six years ago) link

VP, are your dark spots from the sun? I was thinking of trying Skin Laundry when I am back in town.

Yerac, Monday, 9 April 2018 22:12 (six years ago) link

This Deciem thing is waaaay beyond the pale.

It’s nuts! I hope Truaxe has family who can step in. IANAD but it seems like he’s exhibiting classic signs of a psychotic break or bipolar episode? Someone needs to get him medical help before things get any worse.

just1n3, Monday, 9 April 2018 23:01 (six years ago) link

I was thinking about ordering some stuff right as I found out about the drama so now I’m too nervous to place an order.

just1n3, Monday, 9 April 2018 23:02 (six years ago) link

i know what you mean.

re: psychosis, it's definitely evident. i've posted some weird shit online when i've been drunk and seriously regretted it but he doesn't seem like a drinker.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 9 April 2018 23:06 (six years ago) link

It looks like he admits in interviews to not getting along with former partners, having ADD and talking a lot. Where did he get the money to start this line anyway?

Yerac, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:05 (six years ago) link

I've no idea but I'm glad he did. I feel pretty happy when I look in the mirror atm and that's absolutely down to The Ordinary. I just hope the company can weather this.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:11 (six years ago) link

Oh, I totally like the things that I have gotten so far. Although, I've been very lazy about keeping up a routine and need to restart it because I definitely saw improvement. I was using the niacinimide+zinc in the morning and then alternating between the lactic acid 10%, absorbyl glucoside or alpha lipoic acid at night. I know I could layer more, but I've only been using one at a time under moisturizer. I have the big bottle of Hyaluronic acid from The Chemistry Brand but I've only been using that randomly on body parts.

Yerac, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:17 (six years ago) link

The alpha-lipoic acid is just the best.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:30 (six years ago) link

It is the best. I know for sure I will buy that again because my skin looks noticeably better the next day when I use it. I like the other things I got but may try something new. I had been going by the below site regarding what to buy since it broke down the ingredients in a way I could follow. I think that is why I didn't get the Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F because of what it said, but I might pick it up anyway next time since you love it so much.

"but I might pick it up anyway next time since you love it so much."

I may slightly backtrack on that. one or two people mentioned that I was looking very red after using that but it might have been the booze :)

two weeks pass...

some of my current skincare is running low so i finally ordered some stuff from The Ordinary -
- the glycolic acid toner
- virgin marula oil
- alpha arbutin stuff

looks like there are big delays in shipping thought, so it might be a few weeks before i get it

just1n3, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 00:46 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

The buffet with copper peptides is goooooooood. get on that.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 00:32 (five years ago) link

Oooh I’m about to place another order so I’ll add that!

I actually got my last order reasonably fast - faster than I expected. I haven’t used the glycolic acid yet (using up my regular AHA first) but I think the alpha arbutin has evened out my skin tone at least a little? Idk but it seems better most days.

Don’t have much of an opinion on the marula oil- I think I prefer rose hip seed oil instead.

I want to get a vit c serum this time.

just1n3, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 00:46 (five years ago) link

i really like the ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (lol) for vit c. although they brought out some new vit c's recently which i haven't tried and may well be better.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 00:51 (five years ago) link

Yeah there’s a shit ton on there and I’m having trouble choosing which one

just1n3, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 01:01 (five years ago) link

fwiw, i like the one i mentioned because it's an oil but it is super-dry, so light. even though it's an oil it doesn't feel the least bit oily or claggy.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 01:07 (five years ago) link

it's more on the expensive end of what they do though. as is the copper buffet.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 01:09 (five years ago) link

fwiw, someone other than brandon seems to have taken over their social media presence and i've noticed that people asking on insta get fast replies so if you're on insta then ask there. I'm not on it, i just lurk.

do any of you use julep? it’s a a spinoff from a nail salon in seattle that has a monthly box thing. the face cleanser stick is the best thing i’ve bought for that purpose in years, and their three step sheet/sleep mask makes my skin glow. and their lipsticks are wonderful.

i have a referral code if anyone wants.

maura, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 13:50 (five years ago) link

julep dot com

also a dispensary around here sells weed face serum...

maura, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 13:50 (five years ago) link

I got some Julep polishes and I loved their colors but the brushes were huge and fluffy and it was hard to apply neatly. Haven't tried their other prods.

I was going to do an Ordinary order (I see they left Sephora) and was looking at the copper buffet. Wow, that is a big jump ($41.90!) from the normal pricepoints. Is it worth it?

Yerac, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 15:43 (five years ago) link

It's hard to tell, isn't it? I mean I can feel okay or feel repulsed by my reflection on consecutive days and I know that that's MY BRANE and nothing to do with skincare products.

However, I did go through a week or so of telling everyone who would care that they should splurge on this. But then i semi-spurged on the Hylamide Anti Age and I can't tell the difference between what the copper buffet was doing and what the hylamide AA is doing and the latter is currently selling for a drastically reduced price (prices vary depending on your territory).

What did you go for, Yerac?

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Monday, 13 August 2018 22:04 (five years ago) link

fwiw, they are ceasing to sell the Hylamide range to third party sellers and are in the process of reducing the prices on that range to reflect that fact that around 40% of the sale price went to the 3rd party. The Hylamide AA went from £30 to £18 and will stay at around that price if I have that right.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Monday, 13 August 2018 22:07 (five years ago) link

I am in the US now. I still haven't made an Ordinary order yet. I got some Weleda Skin Food to try. Not sure how I feel about it yet since it's so humid here.

Yerac, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 00:24 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

Finally got around to ordering. The only thing that I reordered was the niacinamide/zinc ( i use this the most) and the moistuzizer in a big tube.. I also got:

Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (for eye area))

Retinol 0.5% in Squalane (will use all over face)

Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

Yerac, Sunday, 16 September 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

omg I’m kind of in love with the 2% retinoid in squalane right now! I use it all over my face. I need to reorder a couple of things so maybe will try the retinol in squalane. I also use the squalane oil under daytime moisturizer when feeling like my skin is more dehydrated and/or when I put major sunblock on top.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 16 September 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

I use the 2% retinoid in squalane at night only and it seems I can use it almost every night and suffer no redness or swelling but it’s genuinely doing something to clarify my skin.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 16 September 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

I was reading up a lot on the retinols from The Ordinary. I guess the granactive retinoid isn't drying which is why a blog that I like the write-ups of the products said to consider it for around the eyes and the other one for the entire face.

Yerac, Sunday, 16 September 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

Ah interesting!
(Which blog?)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 16 September 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

I like the write up here: https://theskincareedit.com/2017/11/16/the-ordinary-retinoid

I also followed their bigger writeup on all other products.

Yerac, Sunday, 16 September 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

Oh yes that site! Thanks! :)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 16 September 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I like this a lot instead of the regular articles with all glowing reviews. I like how this breaks it down.

Yerac, Sunday, 16 September 2018 23:55 (five years ago) link

I am new to skin-care. My wife got into the Korean beauty routine (way cool) and the trickle-down is that now I care about my skin. This is my list:

1) Bulldog cleanser (twice daily, cheap)
2) Kiehl's facial fuel 30 SPF (daily, kinda expensive)
3) Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Night Cream (nightly)
4) Bliss Micromagic Microdermabrasion Treatment(weekly)
5) Proraso sandalwood shaving cream
6) Biore UV Aqua Sunscreen Japanese formulation (as needed)

1, 3, and 4 aren't anything special... they're just what I've got lying around the house. I'm looking for more, tho. I might replace 3 w/ The Ordinary .05 retinoid, although the CEO is embroiled in so much weirdness.

remy bean, Monday, 17 September 2018 00:13 (five years ago) link

yeah that is so weird and is kinda turning me off, tbh. On the other hand their products have done wonders for me so i try not to think about it.

what age are you, remy? i thought you'd be a bit young to be using retinol but maybe i'm remembering that wrong. you could try an oil based cleanser, maybe? i think i read somewhere that you're supposed to use an oil cleanser if you use a lot of sunscreen. l'oreal extraordinary oil cleanser is a relatively cheap option here although i actually use atoderm shower oil on my face because i like it and the litre sized bottle makes it cheap af. i have psoriases and it's good for me. i don't have psoriases on my face or neck though, thankfully. the facial fuel is good although i use the kiehl's ultra facial moisturiser which also has spf option and the core ingredient of that one is squalane, which i like a lot. i guess it depends on yr skin type. the ultra facial is particularly good for dry skin.

I'm currently using 1. atoderm oil cleanser 2. ordinary amino acids and b5 (v.g.) (b5 is panthenol) 3. hylamide sub q facial serum (this is excellent) 4. ordinary euk antioxidant sometimes, maybe not as often as i should 5. a bit of squalane. I'm not using moisturiser much atm but i'll either use squalane or the ordinary nmf or the ultra facial. 6. twice a week before bed the ordinary alpha lipoic acid, which i can't recommend highly enough followed by kiehl's midnight recovery oil if i can be bothered.

according to the link yerac posted earlier the ordianry nmf (natural moisturising factors) is:

A very unique amino acid-based moisturizer.
Amino acids not only hydrate the skin, but also perform many of the same functions as retinoids, such as improving fine lines and wrinkles and treating sun damage.
One of the few silicone-free moisturizers on the market.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 17 September 2018 01:51 (five years ago) link

fwiw, if you have been using the ordinary buffet then the hylamide sub q serum is a big step up from that, imo, and is only slightly more expensive.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 17 September 2018 02:02 (five years ago) link

i also think it's better than the buffer with copper peps.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 17 September 2018 02:09 (five years ago) link

I also am very pro kiehls ultra facial moisturizer. I slathered it on for over a decade until I switched to First Aid Beauty. Both are good. I want to try the Biore water essence sunblock for the face that is seeminlgy only available in japan (but also amazon). I heard it is top notch xs100.

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 02:32 (five years ago) link

Xp Remy, unless you have really oily skin I’d suggest trying to limit face washing to just once a day, at night, so you don’t strip your skin. A plain water wash is fine in the morning.

I had a sample of the kiehls midnight recovery oil but I didn’t notice it doing anything for me.

I’m still trying to find an affordable sunscreen that
- doesn’t hurt my eyes
- doesn’t get into my mouth and taste gross
- doesn’t have a white cast
- doesn’t leave my face greasy-feeling all day

I liked the CosRX one but it’s a bit pricey for such a small tube, considering how much you need to use every day. I’ve had an aveeno one and a sunbum one in rotation but they’re not checking everything on my list.

just1n3, Monday, 17 September 2018 02:35 (five years ago) link

I made the mistake of wearing the ordinary nmf this past summer, like, during the high humidity in France. Holy crap did I really notice all the moisture that it drew to my skin. I was having to blot constantly.

This is the facial cleanser I like to use but it's not really relevant for you guys unless you wear makeup. When I travel, I get lazy and end up using bar soap a lot for my face. I really notice the difference after a couple of days. I typically think my skin is fine (thank you asian genes) but yeah, use cleanser for your skin type and moisturize like crazy when you can. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D2M4I46/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 02:39 (five years ago) link

just1n3, I'll report back about the face sunscreen. I actually don't wear it often (I know I should) because it's too heavy and Iprefer to dodge into the shadows while I walk. But I feel like sunscreen marketed towards korean and japanese clients is the way to go.

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 02:43 (five years ago) link

Sorry to post yet another Sali Hughes link, but if you haven’t tried any of the sunscreens in her recent column they’ll be worth a shot because she’s rarely wrong.

Madchen, Monday, 17 September 2018 06:05 (five years ago) link

Oh she mentions the biore watery essence too! I think i saw mentioned somewhere else that it is more gel like?

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 11:25 (five years ago) link

I had good success with the Neutrogena water gel moisturizer over the past year, so bought the SPF 30 water gel sunscreen when I was in Phoenix a few weeks ago. I normally use mineral sunscreen (Coola and TiZo 2 typically though in a pinch I slap some Vanicream on that I normally only use non-face), and this one is chemical, but I really want it to not break me out because the texture is something I can stand to have on my face all day every day. And that is just not the case with the mineral ones.

Jaq, Monday, 17 September 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

Y'll are making me wonder if my Mary Kay cleanser/washcloth/Neutrogena regimen is insufficient for maintaining radiance through the decades.

Jaq, can you tell us if that Vanicream doesn't break you out? I'm interested.
