The only time I really get heated about Chapo Trap House is when Amber rags on the Alamo Drafthouse!

I think their food is really good >:(

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:10 (six years ago) link

The one in SF has terrible food

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 00:57 (six years ago) link

I hate theaters with food on principle but Alamo is the least bad of the lot.

When the first Studio Movie Grill opened up here, the seats were shitty office chairs.

Not even good Hermann Miller shit, the $19 cubicle farm special

I thought that Ready Player One show was great. Also really enjoyed Amber's "Klassic Krusty" quip.

Good thread on their (pretty icky tbh) abortion discussion from the last ep, one of the few times I missed Amber

“Abortion, technically, still is the red line.”

I’ve yelled about how leftist men are completely incapable of effectively contemplating or discussing the politics surrounding abortion but this segment of Chapo was a train wreck that is illustrative of what I’ve been saying.

yeah I couldn't believe how wishy washy they were

flappy bird, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 16:53 (six years ago) link

Lately I'm just finding them harder to listen to in general, but I have spent nearly 200 hours of my life with them -- more than some people I consider friends. So it's not totally surprising. I feel sort of like their grand point (an important one) has been made very effectively and they're just rehashing it while acting as the sort of gossip podcast for the world of second-tier centrist political media figures and the extremely-online contingent.

i agree with this. my patreon subscription stopped working because the credit card it was on is maxed out and i didn't bother to rectify the situation. gone from a must-listen twice a week on the day of release to an occasional listen

Plus there's always the black wolf subreddit in case a particularly tempting one comes up.

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 April 2018 17:25 (six years ago) link

oh good to know (i knew the premium content was easy to find but didn't know where - I've never visited the site reddit iirc)

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 10 April 2018 17:35 (six years ago) link

re: that thread, there are some leaps

Like:

There are individual democrats who deeply believe in Roe v. Wade and want to protect it but to think that there’s something natural in a liberal ideology that requires abortion as an issue is just ignorant. It’s 100% negotiable for the center left.

— the arizona rose (@oppenfailer) April 10, 2018

doesn't contradict Matt's line about being pro-choice - that they're so weak ideologically makes them susceptible to finding compromise and wiggle room. She's also conflating "Democrat" and "liberal" in those posts - the Democratic party line is that you "don't have to be pro-choice" but that's because Pelosi and Schumer still want to sell the idea of a Blue Dog contingent and a big tent with centrists and etc..

Please pray for Barbara Bush, who is currently in critical condition after attempting to give birth to a goblin.

i want an episode of amber and ernest talking about moving

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

we need to hear from ernest

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

FWIW my impression is that there is a pretty strong divide among the center-left over whether abortion is an absolute redline or not. There are definitely otherwise center-ish democrats, especially but not exclusively women, who think the party should never back a non-pro-choice candidate.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 16 April 2018 01:36 (six years ago) link

So I think "it's 100% negotiable for the center left" is kind of a simplification. There are many centrists for whom it is non-negotiable.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 16 April 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

A majority, I think! What a crock of shit to claim that anti-choice has a place in the mainstream of the democratic party. Scum like Lipinski are rightfully on the margins, and widely reviled

Dan I., Monday, 16 April 2018 02:51 (six years ago) link

I don't even know why (because it was business as usual) but I found their segment on Syria pretty repellent. I think I'm out on these jr. high dipshits.

President Keyes, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:20 (six years ago) link

what did you find repellent about it? I found it more inoffensive and unfocused.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 16 April 2018 14:24 (six years ago) link

Although the Power/Slaughter takes were pretty hilarious in a dark sort of way

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 16 April 2018 14:24 (six years ago) link

Would really love to know how and why you guys listened to a 90 minute podcast that dropped right before midnight last night

like æ duce says, smell my anvil vapre (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 April 2018 14:25 (six years ago) link

Um, it's called a morning commute? We have jobs.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Monday, 16 April 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link

just all the sneering "Macron is my boyfriend" and "America needs to go down" shit. It's not that I even disagree with anything, just they seem unable to rise above their twitter beefs to talk about anything serious. It's like trying to talk about health care with someone who just wants to talk about how their personal doctor is a nerd.

President Keyes, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link

I had a long post-ice-storm commute this morning.

Idk what y'all expected from the Syria segment but "unfocused" is fair. Both interview segments were stronger. xps

Simon H., Monday, 16 April 2018 14:28 (six years ago) link

Midnight was ten 1/2 hours ago. Catch up, man.

some do

President Keyes, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

lmao autocorrect

anyway yeah idk man that's the podcast they make, I'm sure there are Serious Lefty Foreign Policy Podcasts but CTH has virtually never been one of them except in the interminable Felix one-off/solo interview episodes

Simon H., Monday, 16 April 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link

It's not that I even disagree with anything, just they seem unable to rise above their twitter beefs to talk about anything serious.

Always assumed this was the m.o.? It's a comedy podcast. The guests regularly talk about serious stuff tho.

xpost what Simon said

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

yeah, if you want serious analysis, listen to (the excellent) citations needed - while chapo does touch on that sometimes, it's usually only with guests who can help focus the discussion

the syria segment was pretty terrible but in fairness i dunno what else they could say about it - the situation is super fucked-up, there is no clear right solution, but performative bombing def seems like a wrong answer

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 16 April 2018 14:37 (six years ago) link

yeah man, i understand that they attempt to be funny. however they often fail.

President Keyes, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:38 (six years ago) link

Really sad that people keep forcing you to listen to this unfunny podcast

says the poster who was just attempting to dunk on people for going to work while listening to a podcast

President Keyes, Monday, 16 April 2018 14:47 (six years ago) link

It is hilarious every time this happens though

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 15:08 (six years ago) link

Syria bit didn't seem unserious to me (moreso than you'd expect from a humorous political podcast) - "Macron is my boyfriend" was a two second throwaway line that never got revisited.
The point of CTH is that it's not just droll political talk. There are outlets for that if you want it - I appreciate Citations Needed and some other but as a whole I'd rather read non-humorous political discussion than hear it.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 16 April 2018 19:39 (six years ago) link

yeah, I think I probably didn't explain myself very well. I like political humor quite a bit. But the Chapo folk are repellent and repetitive.

Why are you listening then

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

probably boredom/excessive free time

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 16 April 2018 22:51 (six years ago) link

the makeup of their audience and how people listen to the show and what it actually is/whatever it started as is hilarious and really interesting imo

@ ups -

I don't even know why (because it was business as usual) but I found their segment on Syria pretty repellent. I think I'm out on these jr. high dipshits.

― President Keyes, Monday, April 16, 2018 10:20 AM (eight hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this is a typically lazy & supercilious response to the show. if it was business as usual why did you keep listening

flappy bird, Monday, 16 April 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

The litmus test on listening IMO is how down you are with their attitude toward US foreign policy (non-interventionist), you have to be down with the idea that we're largely a force of evil in the world or else laughing at liberal/centrists on FP is going to be unlistenable.

If 'all postwar Presidents are war criminals' gets your dander up, not the show for you.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 16 April 2018 23:39 (six years ago) link

liking the...fifteen minutes of mic dicta I've listened thus far

After getting a barrage for several hours for commentary:

Mr. Star, do you admit participating in a legal podcast that you enjoy doing?
- Yes, your honor.
Then I have no choice but to sentence you to do that podcast all the time for the rest of your life. You may only discuss Michael Cohen.
- This is fair. I expected nothing less.
