Pentatonix is cringeworthy but it's hard to get too riled up about them when their stuff isn't on the radio. Per all-knowing Wikipedia they have had four charting singles. Three of them were Christmas songs and the fourth hit #99 on the Hot 100.

That said, their last three albums went #2, #1, #1 (though again, two of them were Christmas albums)

my eldest uncle adores them

1, they are on tv a lot
2, they opened for kelly clarkson
3, acapella is a huge thing among The Youth Of Today
4, thanks to their christmas releases they are a holiday-radio fixture (which negates your original point)

maura, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 16:46 (six years ago) link

And one of their holiday-radio fixture tracks is a cover of Hallelujah.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 16:52 (six years ago) link

yeah they're really breaking down the walls

every time this 'Mean To Be' song by Bebe Rexha (apparently) comes on the radio it makes me feel physically nauseous. The lameness of the repeating lines 'ride with me, ride with me' like the most watered-down version of pop-country, I feel like I'm on a horrible merry-go-round that I can't get off. There's plenty of tosh out there but not since Meghan Trainor has there been a song that actually make me want to barf.

Apparently a 2017 song, though I've only heard this horrifying thing in the past few weeks. Three times now and gets progressively worse each time.

Brad's Youth of Today joke is underrated.

maura, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

a terrible attempt at describing it, but I feel like it's a symptom of baconed nostalgia

The actual YouTube comments on this thing are pretty funny, btw: lots of back and forth about whether the song was made for people who were kids in 2002 vs people who were *born in* 2002.

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 May 2018 01:38 (five years ago) link

Well, that song is woeful. Are there any other songs mining the 00s for "nostalgia feels" yet or will this be the beginning of a new trend in pop?

triggercut, Thursday, 3 May 2018 08:55 (five years ago) link

Also, I feel like Alan Partridge saying this, but the "now we're under the covers" lyric caught me off guard. You think she's still singing about being 11 at that point. I know you only have to wait a couple of beats to find out they're now 18, but for a couple of moments there I've got an image of 2 naked 11 year olds in bed together. Poor songwriting!

based on the title I refuse to listen until Brad weighs in

this xtina song is meh but the bukakke happy video makes it way too extra (xtra?)

The shamelessness of the Karmin lady is really something to behold

JRN, Thursday, 3 May 2018 18:43 (five years ago) link

No one with any sense of shame has any business making pop music.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 3 May 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

damn the Xtina song is a nothing on its own and seems even moreso accompanied by the video

i don't know who thought this would be a good idea but somehow labrinth, sia and diplo are in a group together and calling themselves "LSD"

Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam are doing an LSD tour this year but I don’t think they’re collaborating on an album or anything.

That’s a whole different trip, man

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Friday, 4 May 2018 02:36 (five years ago) link

that's just bad though, not worst

niels, Friday, 4 May 2018 11:43 (five years ago) link

i think it's far worse than the xtina song, which - while certainly chaotic - is a vast improvement on the dross from her last album

monotony, Friday, 4 May 2018 14:29 (five years ago) link

"Red Hot Kinda Love" still sounds great

maura, Friday, 4 May 2018 14:36 (five years ago) link

i wouldn't say i *like* that xtina song but it's certainly more interesting than the lead singles from her last two albums

I don't think there's anything terrible enough that the "this is the dumbing down of society!" brigade in YT comments can't make me side with.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

I kind of see why the Ängie track is terrible but I can't completely hate it.

daavid, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 13:17 (five years ago) link

I actually really like the beat on that one, but everything else is bad. Apparently her album is called Suicidal Since 1995 :/

triggercut, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 13:19 (five years ago) link

that song is apparently from 2016...

https://hiskind.com/swedens-angie-on-mental-health-controversy-and-sexuality-in-music/

maura, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

Mental health is another topic usually shielded from pop music and, as a young person myself, seeing someone like yourself addressing mental health feels incredibly refreshed and necessary. Why do you think it is still considered a taboo topic in music?
Suicidal thoughts is my biggest inspiration I think. I think suicidal thoughts are more common than you think and I want people to know that. Things can look so damn sparkly on the internet but behind all that most people are terrified of everything.

maura, Tuesday, 5 June 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

lol @ that song/video

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link

oh yeah that's def 2016, didn't even check since it showed in my recommended videos (what have I been doing on yt) and just assumed it was new

the song is perhaps not that horrible, just sounds like a very contrived Uffie pastiche, and it def sounds like they did not put in much effort (maybe they should have just asked someone for help with the lyrics/structure, I mean it sounds like something you come up with after getting high or on a night on the town, but then you take that "idea" and work with it) anyway sry for the 2016 derail
