Exactly, I hear Bradfield chipped a nail during a particularly anguished solo once.

Dropped a plectrum and his guitar roadie wasn't around to pick it up for him.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

whew, lot to unpack here

The lyrics largely deal with the Manics’ attack on the dumbed-down identity politics in which Labour courted various musicians and other “hip” celebrities (“politics of celebrity”), and the abandonment of the Party’s genuinely socialist policies in order to secure power. The line “yes I have money but I hate champagne” is presumably a satirical defence of the accusation of being a “champagne socialist”, or a politician whose upper middle class upbringing and relative wealth may conflict with their outward socialist views.

Most intriguingly, ‘Socialist Serenade’ was the subject of some self-censorship on the part of the Manics. The Japanese version of the This Is My Truth album contained both this song and [B115] ‘Black Holes For The Young’ as bonus tracks (B-sides being standard bonuses on Japanese versions of Manics LPs) and printed their lyrics in the accompanying booklet. In the case of this song, a verse was printed which cannot be heard in the recording:

Robin Cook’s gone wild
He’s licking too much pussy
John Prescott’s still cool
Must be cos he’s Welsh
We’re not talking buckets of water here

Those are lyrics?

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link

according to manicsdiscog.wordpress.com... yes

#TheBeatlesIn5Words Both surviving members are Vegan (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

astonishingly enough

#TheBeatlesIn5Words Both surviving members are Vegan (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

So not even "At least the lyrics are good" applies to them anymore? Not that I ever thought that, of course.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:18 (six years ago) link

it's a b-side from 1999 apparently, so i guess it's fuel for the 'always been shit' fire

i've always thought the manics read all the right books, learned nothing from them, and turned them into turgid mor

Robin Cook’s gone wild
He’s licking too much pussy

is an absolute belter of a lyric tbf

Makes you fink.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

idk, i'm not as down on him as everyone else here. Think he's talking about a real, if nebulous problem of alienation and identity there, even if he does veer towards authentocrat bollocks.

Google lobster hierarchies (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

Yeah, but:

1) Those jobs aren't coming back

2) No one else in labour (or elsewhere) has a solution to that problem so it's weird to view it as a "Corbyn problem".

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 12 April 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

absolutely

“yes I have money but I hate champagne”

I can't tell if this is supposed to be sarcastic or not? If it isn't, it's particularly odd given that 'champagne socialist' was first coined in reference to Nye 'This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours' Bevan:

In accepting Beaverbrook's hospitality, Bevan's lifestyle and tastes themselves provoked criticism. Even the historian Robert Crowcroft, writing in 2011, dismisses Bevan as a 'Welsh miner turned bon viveur and social climber' Brendan Bracken's remark about Bevan's champagne socialism was first recounted in the Evening Standard by Churchill's son, Randolph, on 8 August 1958, the day Bracken died at the age of 57 from oesophageal cancer. Bracken is said to have berated Bevan in the drawing room of Beaverbrook's Stornoway House: 'You Bollinger Bolshevik, you ritzy Robespierre, you lounge-lizard Lenin. Look at you, swilling Max's champagne and calling yourself a socialist.' Michael Foot was given an alternative account of the incident by Frank Owen, who was also present. In this version of the story, Bevan claimed that it was his right to enjoy fine wine, and told Bracken: 'The best I ever had from you, by the way, Brendan, I'd call bottom lower-class Bolshevik Bollinger.'... Bracken was savaging Bevan for arguing for the redistribution of money and property from the richest while enjoying the fruits of wealth. Bevan, however, thought people from his working-class background had the same right as those from privileged backgrounds to enjoy the finer things in life, and his needling of Bracken for providing poor champagne was a typical flourish with which to finish his point.

https://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/isle-of-man-set-to-scrap-its-fitness-for-work-test/

Just as in the UK, there were criticisms of the “tick box” nature of the assessment process, the failure to deal fairly with claimants with fluctuating conditions such as ME and multiple sclerosis, and the use of unqualified and unsympathetic assessors.

So basically an appalling system that is driving people to suicide and death in the UK has been scrapped in the Isle of Man because they are a self governing crown dependency and have the wherewithal to do it. I'd say well done, but they still seem like Nazis tbh!

That American poison pixie who’s from some free-market anti-tax foundation is on QT again. WHY

suzy, Thursday, 12 April 2018 21:53 (six years ago) link

oh no! I've heard her whole routine on how the NHS could be killing people much more efficiently umpteen times now.

calzino, Thursday, 12 April 2018 22:08 (six years ago) link

I'd be very interested in her ideas on how to run the BBC more efficiently though.

calzino, Thursday, 12 April 2018 22:11 (six years ago) link

oh apparently she's said something about people on zero contracts being absolutely content with their standard of living and loving it!

calzino, Thursday, 12 April 2018 22:20 (six years ago) link

She's on Sky News most nights too, if they can't get Claire Fox or Brendan O'Neill. Dia Chakravarty must be cursing her, she's completely stole her thunder and most of her TV spots.

Nice of the BBC to resurrect the Labour/anti-Semitism controversy a week or two after it dropped off the front pages.

Buff Jeckley (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 April 2018 22:25 (six years ago) link

I am currently reading Beneath A Scarlet Sky, by Mark Sullivan, a remarkable story of WWII Milan - a harrowing read which makes the context of #LabourAntisemitism even more stark and objectionable

— Dominic Holland (@domholland) March 27, 2018

a work of period fiction was enough to get this "funnyman" angry about the Labour/anti-Semitism controversy, there is still a lot residual anger out there.

I think ILB did a wonderful demolition of one of his masterpieces.

A lot of people seemed to have travelled a ways to attend QT in Liverpool, if only one person in the audience called out Boris Johnson for racism. Half of Twitter thought JJ was wearing a wire or at least kept his phone on to feed lines.

Kate Andrew’s squeaky little voice, argh - I’m American and it drives me nuts, can’t imagine how you lot cope. Is she someone who came to work at a right-wing think tank on an ALEC/Atlantic Bridge bursary?

suzy, Friday, 13 April 2018 05:50 (six years ago) link

I think I read Atlantic bridge once yes

plax (ico), Friday, 13 April 2018 09:01 (six years ago) link

there's a time for building bridges and a time for burning them!

calzino, Friday, 13 April 2018 09:06 (six years ago) link

lol! there was someone complaining last night that Kate is Brexit neutral thus proving the BBC's Remain bias.

calzino, Friday, 13 April 2018 09:12 (six years ago) link

American right-wing lobbyists want Brexit so they can get 65 million new private health customers in a trade agreement - a Labour government would also prevent an NHS sell off.

suzy, Friday, 13 April 2018 09:24 (six years ago) link

I don't understand how shadowy think tanks like IEA with no funding transparency, whose main raison d'être seems to be promoting the privatisation of the NHS can get away with having registered charity status. I'm sure it's simple enough to get away with it, but it's an absolute travesty.

Ian Dunt has trenchant views about the Manics

Hard to think of a band who have been around so long, and thinking meaningfully about politics and the state of the country for the whole of that time.

I do wonder about the extent to which the photos used are not of the person actually tweeting, believable though they often are.

xpost yes it does, seeing a smiling bottle blonde saying refugees deserve to drown makes it more specific and interesting and funnier, of course. I do think it's funny and depressing.

Of course if that was a bunch of trump supporter selfies under moronically composed build-the-wall lyin’-comey tweets I reckon I’d have flung my phone across the room by the third one.
