and then you have Salford city who are also pretty much a vaguely hobbyist Man U surrogate at this point. Can understand the disgust at the glazers etc but eh modern football and they’re hardly the worst of it

either #0 or NBS posted quite a lot about FCUM until I basically bullied them into silence

imago, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 22:49 (six years ago) link

wonder if they still follow them on the sly though

I'm deliberately going to go to a FCUM game next time I'm in Manc just to troll you lj

imago, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 22:56 (six years ago) link

I doubt i've ever posted about FCUM

lol at the idea of you bullying me into silence though

Number None, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:03 (six years ago) link

yeah it was NBS and we pretty much hashed it out this time two years ago

Tim spoke eloquently about why they weren't a force for evil really i mean idec now it's fine

imago, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:10 (six years ago) link

I can remember that now. I was probably being an obnoxious prick and got bollocked by Tim for pushing too hard on this "support your local club" canard. Apologies NBS, but I still genuinely hope nothing but the worst on FCUM!

calzino, Tuesday, 17 April 2018 23:28 (six years ago) link

FCUM were one of our earliest patron clubs when we reformed so I have a bit of a soft spot for them regardless.

Anyway, hasn't sunk in blah blah blah. Maybe our worst performance of the season, 1-0 from the spot against a club with no goalkeeper but they all count.

It's going to be strange playing in 'proper' football grounds every week but I'll miss the lower league awaydays. Whether we go north or south will be determined by who goes down and who comes up through the playoffs. North definitely is the harder league.

One of the forgotten stats is that 2 out of the three seasons 100+ points hasn't been enough to get you promoted with us. This year Slough are the only side in the playoffs that can't get to 100 (but it is 99 so ymmv).

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 07:38 (six years ago) link

Does that mean there are a handful of pretty good teams and a load of poor ones in that division?

I note poor old Torquay are heading in the other direction: lottery winner has gone, club bought by a property developer who masquerades as a sporting company, all but relegated to the Conference South. I feel bad for the Chipnickers.

nxd, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 08:32 (six years ago) link

That's pretty much it Tim, or you get a perfect storm of sides in form at the same time. This year, for example, Slough bought nearly the entire Hitchin team that lost the playoff final last year and so the players have performed at the same level. Some abject teams though, Gosport and Dunstable are Swindon in the Premier League bad.

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 08:35 (six years ago) link

Amazing that Gosport have managed to get just 11 points in 43 games and a single win could still stop them getting relegated.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 08:43 (six years ago) link

I see ILX's Spurs EPL thread has taken a turn for the better

(Henry) Green container bin with face (Tom D.), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 08:56 (six years ago) link

Gosport brought in a load of ex-league players at Christmas to help them try and catch Dunstable. Has almost worked.

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 09:14 (six years ago) link

Scrolled down their first-team squad - had that slightly uncanny feeling you get when you look at football video games and future seasons' squads are made up of recombining names. Until I got to Rowan Vine and Craig McAllister, both of whom turned out for Exeter years ago. Playing those two together, combined age of 72, would stretch the limits of the word 'lumbering'.

Tim, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 09:35 (six years ago) link

I can remember when Vine was just a nipper on loan at Brentford, it was probably his FL debut and he scored as well, I think.#livingtoolate

calzino, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 09:48 (six years ago) link

Vine previously played League football for Portsmouth, Brentford, Colchester United, Luton Town, Birmingham City, Queens Park Rangers (QPR), Hull City, Milton Keynes Dons, Exeter City, Gillingham, St Johnstone, Hibernian and Greenock Morton, and non-league football for Welling United, Havant & Waterlooville, Gosport Borough (two spells), Basingstoke Town, Southall, Hayes & Yeading and Hartley Wintney.

nxd, Wednesday, 18 April 2018 10:32 (six years ago) link

Will be interesting if we're in the National League North next season, as we'd be playing with Kidderminster Harriers, Stockport County, York City, Boston United, Telford United, Chester and FC United of Manchester!

Don't forget Darlington. The first three you've named are still in with a shout of promotion too.

either #0 or NBS posted quite a lot about FCUM until I basically bullied them into silence

That would definitely be me, not Number None, but I have no recollection of either posting 'quite a lot' or being bullied into silence. I think I posted on the non-league thread about once or twice a season to universal indifference so stopped bothering until Tim specifically asked me my thoughts on the civil war at the club a couple of years ago.

I can remember that now. I was probably being an obnoxious prick and got bollocked by Tim for pushing too hard on this "support your local club" canard. Apologies NBS, but I still genuinely hope nothing but the worst on FCUM!

Yeah, I remember that bit.

Back on our league in the wrong thread for a minute, you all probably (rightly) missed Jamie Cureton playing against for 3 different clubs this season and the whole Grant Holt farrago at King's Lynn.

Jamie Cureton is still about eh

Not if they reach the EL final! I'd be ok with Arsenal winning the Europa League. For Wenger. And for the 'fam' to beg him to stay at that point.
