I don't want to get pounced upon, but I was going to say that in an exceedingly ill-timed and clueless way, it sort of seemed well-intentioned...If you instead see the comment as politely racist, though, I can appreciate that. Anyway, I'll be happy if a few stupid and insensitive words are the worst anyone can point to when I check out.

the sentimentality that will congeal around the memory of Poppy Bush when he exhales his last breath will be as awful as Reagan's death

And then there's her famous quote on Geraldine Ferraro...that one probably won't endear her to, I don't know, 47.3% of the country when it makes the rounds today. (I remembered the quote, but I thought she was talking about Hillary!)

Bush attempted to persuade her son George W. to not run for Governor of Texas in the 1994 gubernatorial election, convinced he could not defeat Ann Richards.

I have no strong reason to dislike her, as far as I know, thought I was a bit too young to care about her one way or the other at the time (most of my memories of her are actually Simpsons and Naked Gun parodies). The MSNBC pundits using her death to pine nostalgically for the Republican party of her husband's era earlier this evening is straight up nauseating, but that's not her fault.

Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 18 April 2018 01:21 (six years ago) link

So sad to hear the news, she was so young. I couldn't stand her father, but she and her twin always seemed all right.

calzino, Friday, 20 April 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

I noticed today that USA flags were flying at half-staff. I assume this was for Barbara Bush, the spouse of a past president, who died at age 92, wealthy and well-cared for. This is not some national tragedy. This was normal and expected.

I greatly doubt Eleanor Roosevelt's death was similarly marked, despite her being a far more significant national figure. I've watched for over half a century as this tradition for representing days of nationwide mourning has been further and further cheapened to the point that almost anything that combines death with continuous cable news coverage now merits flags put at half-staff. It sucks.

KING: Cokie, you knew Barbara Bush. You spent some time interviewing her over the years. What was she like?

COKIE: Well, perhaps this may sound a bit misplaced, saying it to an audience of several million people about a recently deceased public figure who's being buried today with much pomp,ceremony and inflated eulogies, a moment when I am expected by convention to say something admiring or reverent, or at the very least non-committal, but really, the woman was something of a bitch. No, really, it's true, so why hide it? {her mic goes dead}

Barbara Bush was a person. Now she is dead. But while alive she was very close to the pinnacle of public power, where decisions made by her husband and her children affected many millions, if not billions of people. If it was OK to point out her shortcomings during her life, her dying does not excuse or dismiss those shortcomings. I don't think her flaws or wrongs were so massive as to justify glee upon her death, but painting her in false colors does no one any good.
