and it doesn't make sense that seemingly no one has been after nearly a month.

The disciplinary process seems incredibly bureaucratic and hopefully this is something Formby can change.

They probably have to follow procedure to avoid the risk of legal challenges esp in cases like this where they don’t want things dragging on and on.

Wadsworth being charged with bringing the party into disrepute rather than antisemitism directly. Clear as mud.

nashwan, Friday, 27 April 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link

His outburst pretty much ruined a launch event and ensured hostile media talked about that and not the Chakrabati Report. He could have made all the same points and observations afterward (it is not antisemitic to say an MP appears to be a contact of a Telegraph reporter) without starting a row that did bring Labour into disrepute.

suzy, Friday, 27 April 2018 13:44 (six years ago) link

Chris Williamson is a total idiot + liability and it is only matter of time before he says something idiotic on RT or summat. Somebody put a muzzle on him at least until May 3rd has passed.

is there a full transcript online anywhere of what Wadsworth actually said at the Chakrabarti Inquiry event? There's a clip of some of it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHv3D7g4RH4

this is the description on Wadsworth's wiki page

At a launch, to which the media were invited, on 30 June 2016 for the publication of the Chakrabarti Inquiry report into allegations of antisemitism and racism in the Labour Party, Daily Telegraph journalist Kate McCann questioned Jeremy Corbyn about a "Momentum member" handing out a "leaflet" calling for the deselection of anti-Corbyn MPs. Wadsworth had earlier given McCann a copy of his "press release" at her request. In response to the question about him, Wadsworth responded by publicly stating that he saw the Telegraph journalist handing a copy of the press release to Labour MP Ruth Smeeth, and thus claimed to have spotted who was "working hand in hand", a reference to anti-Corbyn Labour MPs colluding with the right-wing press.

Most of Wadsworth's brief comments, captured on a minute-long widely publicised video, were about the under-representation of Africans, Caribbeans and Asians at the launch, about which Corbyn told the meeting he agreed.

handing out leaflets at this event calling for deselection probably not helpful, but it seems unfair to characterise this as an 'outburst' - I think Wadsworth is entitled to reply to the comments made by McCann, and entitled to make the point about the lack of black people at the event, given that the terms of reference for the Chakrabarti Inquiry were explicitly to look at all forms of racism, not just anti-semitism. imo setting the inquiry up this was a mistake, and as many ppl said at the time Corbyn should have set up a report looking exclusively at anti-semitism in Labour, extending the brief to all forms of racism just looked like an attempt to muddy the waters, but given that he didn't Wadsworth had every right to make the points he did. Unless there's something that I'm missing, it seems like Wadsworth has been treated in a pretty shabby fasion here? (are there other examples of him saying or doing anything problematic apart from this incident at the report launch)

soref, Friday, 27 April 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

there seems to be something dubious and implicitly racist about the way a number of accounts of this describe Wadsworth as behaving in an 'aggressive' or 'threatening' manner, which don't really seem to be borne out by the evidence

soref, Friday, 27 April 2018 15:32 (six years ago) link

xp should say "imo setting the inquiry up this WAY was a mistake"

I don't think Esther will be moving anywhere else soon, not while the DWP has become the Zone Rouge of departments that nobody wants and if you are already completely toxic like her, there is no rep to protect.

Javid sounds credible.

i dunno you hear a lot of hardworking families, heterosexual working class nuclear families, straight white honest godfearing police loving families who say things like that. that's the Labour core. that's the heart. we can't betray these people with shit like welfare states and taxing the rich. they just want to see wasters and druggies hanged. that's what Labout stands for. that's what the Party's always been about. while i'm on, nuke Damascus.

John Woodcock has urged fellow Labour MPs to back military action in Syria

John Woodcock is planning to resign the Labour whip in protest at the party's direction under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership

Labour has more common ground with [Amber Rudd] than so many of her potential successors - we should be careful what we wish for.

John Woodcock met the king of Saudi Arabia as he led a Labour fact finding mission to the country

Woodcock, the Labour and Co-operative MP for Barrow and Furness, has previously praised Turkey’s ‘fight against extremism’, and called on other Labour figures to show more understanding and support towards the Turkish state.

I am not going to be bullied by anyone in pointing out that describing Israel as a ‘cess pit’ is rather extreme (as is wanting to ‘f- capitalism’)

calzino, Saturday, 28 April 2018 12:05 (six years ago) link

I hate how much space and time the BBC have devoted to Alfie Evans, it's not a test case, the attention has proved to be entirely destructive, the facts of the case appear to be fairly cut and dry, yet they still seem to think they are acting in the public interest by leading with it for days on end.
