This end of the decade stuff is fun, but still really surreal to look at. Was it really eight or nine years ago when the Strokes were supposed to be heirs to some rock and roll throne with their, admittedly impressive, debut? This kind of thing strengthens narratives surrounding the trends of the decade (The decline of This Genre, the rise That) for better or worse.

some people wait a lifetime for a momus like this (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 May 2009 10:51 (fourteen years ago) link

It is early for these lists. But it also seems pretty laid-back at this point, and all subject to change. At this point, it feels more like an early nominations thread, with the real arguing to come later.

And J0rdan's right, too. There's a lot of good material left to release this year (e.g., Wilco, Annie, Sonic Youth, Grizzy Bear, Clientele, The Books, The New Pornographers, Roxy Music, Amy Winehouse). But still. Besides, this thread already reminded me of some great stuff that I'd forgotten, and need to revisit (e.g., The Streets and (can't believe I forgot) Kanye West and The Exploding Hearts) or that I've slept-on, and need to explore (e.g., Fujiya and Miyagi).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I would have liked this thread better if people had posted their favorite music into categories

I am mostly interested in Dad Rock or close variations thereof (perhaps John Fahey, Aimee Mann, Clientele, and Wilco) exceptions - Johanna Newson's voice annoys me to no end. So no category can be perfect - especially for an "aspie" sailor like me. Oh and don't get me started on Devendra Banhart's voice. Makes me sad that Natalie Portman isn't the kind of girl I used to imagine her as.

Generally, if your top ten albums includes a token artist I hate, I'm going to dismiss that list as a whole (by quickly scrolling down to a new list to get away from said artist). I'm such a bastard in that way. It's like when people get upset because someone includes ____ with _____ in the same sentence.

I wanna be your toy boy (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 24 May 2009 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't want to stray from topic but there are a lot better hippies she could have picked. Banhart must have swindled her. He must be some sort of alpha male hippie that got first dibs because he was a persistent asshole.

goodbye horses, I'm crying over you (Mulvaney), Sunday, 24 May 2009 14:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I like "dad-rock," too, but maybe people have diverse tastes?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:01 (fourteen years ago) link

That's why I suggested categories. People have the right to diverse tastes and I respect that. I like a little of every genre too but alas it is just that, a little. Anyways, please don't stop making top 10 lists because of me.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda thought this thread was more "at this point what kinda stuff will be on your end of year lists." That's how I was answering anyway and that's how most ppl seem to be from how they are phrasing it.

2. Several songs in one
This represents the worst of mainstream pop.

Wait a minute, Geir. Aren't you on fire for "several songs in one?" Isn't that precisely what "Supper's Ready" and acres of prog are all about?

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 24 May 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Surprising to me how little I'm really enthusiastic. Can certainly get behind:

Arcade Fire, Funeral (seems much older; had to double-check it was released after 1999.)
New Pornographers, Mass Romantic
The Mountain Goats, All Hail West Texas
Belle and Sebastian, Dear Catastrophe Waitress
The White Stripes, Elephant

And beyond that, I'm not sure! Maybe the first Man Man record, maybe Widow City, maybe Talkie Walkie, maybe What's Happening in Pernambuco... but much as I liked these records when I got them I haven't really returned to them.

Can anyone recommend me some hip-hop singles? Since I'm not an native English speaker most of the time I don't get hip-hop because I rarely focus on the lyrics, so my attention is almost completely drawn to the production techniques. The only hip-hop which enthuses me this decade so far is those with production similar by J Dilla or MF Doom. Sort of big immersive beats with a dash of psychedelia, something which I can play without focusing on the lyrics so much...I suppose not focusing on the lyrics when listening to hip-hop is sort of missing the point... but still, I love the sound.

Any song recommendations please?

Moka, Friday, 9 October 2009 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan around (by any stretch). But I think GhostFace is maybe/probably the best album artist of the decade. Up through the new disc (which I haven't heard), you can't go wrong sampling his songs, e.g., Shakey Dog, Walk Around, the first non-skit song from the Ironman album (title escapes me).

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 18:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry if those aren't "singles," per se. I listed what I know/recall.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I like Ghostface. Jellyfish and Walk Around are some of my favorites of his.

Moka, Friday, 9 October 2009 19:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, Jellyfish is great, too.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 19:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Oddly enough I do understand and get most of the lyrics when listening to artists like Madvillian or Ghostface Killah. So asides having a wicked production in their songs I love their lyrics.
Must be they sound like they're stoned most of the time which makes it easier to understand them since they speak slower.

FWIW I could have easily put Fishscale and maybe even Pretty Toney on there, but Supreme Clientele is already there and I wanted to give some other rappers some shine. I know I have 2 albums each from Daft Punk and Radiohead, but in both cases they seem like such different records, both essential in their own way. I think LCD SS deserves a spot too, but I couldn't decide on one. I think 43:55 is my favorite, but it doesn't seem like enough of an ALBUM, y'know?

Man I want to make a singles list, but it's gonna be so tough! There are just a ridiculous number of songs I love from the last 10 years, just in hip hop alone! Not nearly as easy to quantify as albums IMO.

Likely my top pick though, a true all-time incredible classic, is "Le Retournille" by Sébastien Tellier. I hope it gets its due on the ILX poll (was it even on the Pitchfork list at all?)

Messed up. Richard Hawley's disc is Cole's Corner (The Ocean is the first single from it). What a fantastic disc, especially as summer fades into autumn.
