I haven't read her book yet but it sounds like it works more as a meditation on our societal attitudes toward health and death than as sound analysis of specific procedures and treatments.

There is dispute over how broadly and at what age mammograms and colonoscopies should be recommended. I think there is no dispute over whether they prevent disease, but some dispute (at least in the colonoscopy case, which I know about a little more) about whether a broadened testing regime leads people to get surgeries to remove slow-growing tumors they could have just unknowingly lived with for the rest of their life, and out of every 1000 surgeries, especially with older patients, you're gonna have some bad outcomes. But I wouldn't say they "don't prevent disease," just that there are health costs in addition to the health benefits.

apparently quite a lot of women get false positives on mammograms and end up getting cancer treatment they don't need. so there is some dispute as to how early and how often women should get them when you weigh up the benefits of early detection vs these false positives.

I liked Amber's reading on the NYPost labor article, diff style than Will's but very illuminating. I think she should do her own podcast on labor politics and organizing or something like that, maybe get away from the chapo schtickiness and more of her own voice

the most recent premium was really good i thought, most enjoyable episode in a while. amber + will + matt + felix is my favorite chapo configuration

both eps were strong this week, though the Trump segment was a little wearisome just because of the subject matter, even if Roth is one of the only worthwhile writers on the subject
