you can expect a fresh round of "who do these assholes think they are?!" takes when they hit 100k on Patreon, which will be in the near future

(I think they've made more than enough money as it is, #BlackWolfFeed forever)

Simon H., Thursday, 10 May 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

I like that they included a "Come to Amber's workshop on canvassing" spot recently. I wish there was more of that and less America the Book plugging

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:27 (five years ago) link

This was a great ep btw, except the part when Ehrenreich was like “mammograms and colonoscopies don’t prevent disease” gtfooooooo

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

I haven't read her book yet but it sounds like it works more as a meditation on our societal attitudes toward health and death than as sound analysis of specific procedures and treatments.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

iirc there is some dispute over the effectiveness of mammograms?

Simon H., Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link

There is dispute over how broadly and at what age mammograms and colonoscopies should be recommended. I think there is no dispute over whether they prevent disease, but some dispute (at least in the colonoscopy case, which I know about a little more) about whether a broadened testing regime leads people to get surgeries to remove slow-growing tumors they could have just unknowingly lived with for the rest of their life, and out of every 1000 surgeries, especially with older patients, you're gonna have some bad outcomes. But I wouldn't say they "don't prevent disease," just that there are health costs in addition to the health benefits.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

apparently quite a lot of women get false positives on mammograms and end up getting cancer treatment they don't need. so there is some dispute as to how early and how often women should get them when you weigh up the benefits of early detection vs these false positives.

there will be some article on the NYT or similar about it if you have a google

there's also the whole "breast cancer industry" thing.

oh hey it's Adam Conover on Citations Needed

In "Ep. 38: The Media’s Bogus Generation Obsession" we discuss how the torrent of hacky "Millennials do X" and "Boomers do Y" stories aren't just stupid, but actually work to obscure discussions of inequality and racism. With guest @adamconover. https://t.co/YACeYIdjdX

The book excerpt they read on the show wasn't bad, although it didn't feel particularly Chapo-esque in style either (maybe because it was the Virgil and Brendan chapter).

I admit I chuckled at the groany puns

finally got around to watching a few contrapoints videos a couple of days ago and yeah she really is as good as advertised huh

and TOWERS MONACO as 'seaman' (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 8 June 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

I've liked every single one I've watched. Her two-parter on capitalism is a great entry point for budding leftists, I think. Her most recent one on trans discourse and self-loathing was SUPER interesting too.

Simon H., Friday, 8 June 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

I liked Amber's reading on the NYPost labor article, diff style than Will's but very illuminating. I think she should do her own podcast on labor politics and organizing or something like that, maybe get away from the chapo schtickiness and more of her own voice

I'm kinda surprised they had PFT Commenter on

I had/have no idea who that is and the sports commentator references mostly flew over my head, but I appreciated the changeup.

I thought this op-ed from a middle-aged fan was rather sweet. (Also touches on how economic disenfranchisement doesn't only hit millenials. among other topics)

Simon H., Sunday, 10 June 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

definitely enjoying the CA pod, it's really good

gbx, Sunday, 10 June 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

From that Salon article, did anyone notice this bit:

‘My views have changed enough that I went on a February afternoon to a Communist Manifesto Class held by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.’

It’s an...interesting development to go from sorta disengaged straight to PSL.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Monday, 11 June 2018 06:10 (five years ago) link

Yeah that's intense! Usually it's a Chapo-to-DSA pipeline but maybe they were just handier, locally speaking.

Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2018 06:27 (five years ago) link

aren’t PSL the trotskyist org that just basically hands oht newspapera

global tetrahedron, Monday, 11 June 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

*newspapers

global tetrahedron, Monday, 11 June 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

Yeah, probably not bad from a learning standpoint though, I would expect them to be heavy on reading groups

Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2018 14:01 (five years ago) link

aren’t PSL the trotskyist org that just basically hands oht newspapera

Well, selling them at fifty cents per isn’t exactly handing them out, but yeah, to my limited understanding.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Monday, 11 June 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

yeah generally just enough to cover printing costs

Simon H., Monday, 11 June 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

hey isn't every trot organization all about selling newspapers?

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 11 June 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

The one I was organizing with for a while was careful to balance that out with a bunch of other activities but that's often the case, yes

the most recent premium was really good i thought, most enjoyable episode in a while. amber + will + matt + felix is my favorite chapo configuration

flappy bird, Monday, 11 June 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

both eps were strong this week, though the Trump segment was a little wearisome just because of the subject matter, even if Roth is one of the only worthwhile writers on the subject
