i wonder if the Switch is powerful enough to eventually support a VR peripheral. the Switch has gyros, it has motion tracking, in both the screen and the joycons. it would surprise me if Nintendo does not eventually do something like that. or if not them, then it seems like someone might be able to fabricate a Gear VR-style holder for the Switch, Labo-style.

it is not powerful enough for VR

ciderpress, Monday, 14 May 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link

Also other companies are doing VR, so Nintendo won’t be interested since it wouldn’t be a point of differentiation for the hardware

valorous wokelord (silby), Monday, 14 May 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

Why would you want to add chunky peripherals to a system whose main selling point is being portable AND a console

El Tomboto, Monday, 14 May 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

good point. i would advise against using it while driving your car or taking the bus or being on an airplane.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 14 May 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

ciderpress I’m the Kirby who added u

Today it’s Pokemon rumors, something about this year’s games being a revisit/reimagining of the Kanto region featuring Pikachu and Eevee versions.

Also the story mode for Mario Tennis has gotten more details in a trailer. Luigi gets kidnapped! Experience points and equipment upgrades!

Also fresh trailer for Octopath. The big thing there is as you collect the protagonists into your party you can switch whose story you are playing through at any time within your one save file.

Mario tennis looking less and less skippable... too many games to play this summer

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

Online test tournament June 1-3 for Tennis; I like these network stress tests disguised as free previews.

valorous wokelord (silby), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

yeah they're good except sometimes they cause me to suddenly have another game i want to buy that i could have remained blissfully unaware of like the blazblue one

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

hah!

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 19:07 (five years ago) link

that's your fault for posting about in here I'll have you know. turned out to be my favorite fighting game I've played in ages, mechanically

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

also wizard of legend is out today, it's now the good roguelite

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 19:49 (five years ago) link

xp not on Switch, but if you haven't, take a look at the fighting systems for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite (very similar w/2v2 and fluid change outs) and Dragonball FighterZ especially being pretty accessible. Even last year's KOF has single button autocombos as well
(I'm kinda sorta looking forward to Blade Strangers and SNK Heroines as well)

Nhex, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

i'll probably give blade strangers a try, it looks kinda trashy but the roster is hilarious. did they ever make more umehara kawase games or is her inclusion just an extremely deep cut?

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

not really looking for non switch fighters atm and it's sacrilegious to say it but ive never really liked dbz's character designs in general so that's less appealing to me even if it does come to switch

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

awwwwwww. but Toriyama did Chrono Trigger and all the Dragon Quest games too! (though with... less blonde spiky hair)

the PSP Umehara games got ported to PC in 2015 - that's the last I've heard of the series. but yes, that is a ridiculous deep cut

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:37 (five years ago) link

err, Vita/3DS, not PSP. got the generation wrong

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:38 (five years ago) link

Toriyama’s DQ characters are his best, tbf. DBZ is a quagmire of indistinguishable five-heads and unpleasantly rigid musculature.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:45 (five years ago) link

i like the chrono trigger and DQ designs, just not dbz

lol not only is kawase in but some other character from those games is now - even deeper cut

ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 04:48 (five years ago) link

hyrule warriors definitive edition this weekend, lets go

ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 21:18 (five years ago) link

Some neat looking games coming out lately, like Don't Starve and Little Nightmares, but the prices seem waaaay too high. The former is $20, but the latter is $30. Again, could better be justified if they weren't significantly more than the same product on other systems (unless I am missing something?).

Kept waiting for "Last Resort" to pop up, dark music, and one guy eating the others in the wilderness.

Ok I went out and bought Hyrule Warriors, have never played a musou before, this game is like delicious button-pressing popcorn.

valorous wokelord (silby), Sunday, 20 May 2018 01:35 (five years ago) link

musou games can be confusing until you figure out that they're really just RTSes where you play as a single unit rather than as the hand of god

ciderpress, Sunday, 20 May 2018 02:46 (five years ago) link

What is this weirdness with Resident Evil 7 coming to Switch ... as a Japan-only streaming title?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 May 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link

An experiment, presumably.

Anybody else pick up the Korg Gadget? It's been criticized for missing some features (it does suck that there's no built-in way to export audio) but it's a fun little collection of virtual synths/musical scratch pad.

a film with a little more emotional balls (zchyrs), Monday, 21 May 2018 23:44 (five years ago) link

I paid for it on iPad so haven't seen a good reason to buy it again. It's pretty cool, but kinda stuck between a diversion and something actually useful for making music.

DJI, Monday, 21 May 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

Is there any gameplay or other difference between buying the cartridges and the download codes for Zelda and Mario Odyssey? The cartridges seem out of stock everywhere and I may have access to the system this weekend.

calstars, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 01:04 (five years ago) link

no difference other than you need enough space for the digital download. the system's internal storage should hold those 2 games though if it's not already been filled by other things

ciderpress, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 01:21 (five years ago) link

(or you can put em on a microSD card if you have one of those)

Thanks cider

can't believe this is coming out tomorrow!

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link

Excited! Kicked in to the kickstarter to get it.

I tried playing Death Road to Canada with one of my kids. It was fun and clever and silly, but I've got to say, getting kids to appreciate retro 8-bit style games is as uphill a battle as making them sit down and watch a hyper stylized, intentionally stilted academy ratio B&W drama.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link

I'm actually sort of getting bummed with my Switch. I was so excited at the start, but I'm quickly getting sick of delays, or things coming to the Switch late and/or last, or massive cuts in quality to even get stuff to run on the Switch in the first place. And then when a title finally comes to the Switch it's often significantly more expensive than it costs on other consoles. I dunno, just frustrated. I sort of was thinking of my kids when I got the Switch, but I see all these neat looking titles on, say, Playstation and feel a little disappointed, esp. when hyped upcoming Nintendo titles are things that just don't interest me (like Mario Tennis, or Pokemon). The Dark Souls delay hurt most, because I was so excited to finally play that and now ... it's awol.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

If you are mostly interested in brand new 3rd party titles the Switch is not the place for you. Plenty of indie titles are gonna be day-date on the Switch as time goes on; sorry the stuff you were jazzed for is taking a long time.

valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

Anyway I have been playing Hyrule Warriors and I got to admit there’s some fun challenge in the time management and running all over the battlefield to rescue your dipshit captains and I’m not really an action game person so even pulling off the “hit B five times” combos is pleasant.

valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

kinda in a holding pattern right now (really only toad and tennis on the horizon and they're both hardly system shifters.)

holding out for a solid E3 (metroid? next zelda tease? pikmin? a.n.other?) but don't underestimate the propensity of nintendo for fucking it completely

third parties will come on stream into Q1 2019 I'd expect, now they've seen that the system is doing numbers

||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:24 (five years ago) link

It's not just brand new titles is the thing! Take Doom, for example. The game is a year and a half old, and it is currently available for Playstation and Xbox for less than half the cost of the Switch version, while the intentionally downgraded Switch version (which I am still enjoying) is riddled with slowdowns and stuff. Or, yeah, Dark Souls, which is 7 years old. Or Hollow Knight, a year old, or lots of other games that are trickling down to the Switch that have been on every platform from Xbox to iPad (which is the case with many of the indies, many of which for that matter are just retro 8-bit wonders).

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting my money's worth with stuff I have, and I still haven't started Mario Odyssey or Zelda (!). But I stand by my assessment that calendar year 2018 has been pretty lame, and there are as yet no heavy hitter confirmed release dates to look forward to. I guess Wolfenstein, assuming no delays and that it actually works on release?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link

"intentionally downgraded". the switch must have half the power of the PS4 no?

I agree 2018 has been a total wash out so far (barring what? celeste? which is multiplatform anyway)

I still haven't started Mario Odyssey or Zelda (!)

get these played you absolute mad man

||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

Ha it is pretty silly to be disappointed with the switch if you haven't touched the 2 best games ever (not just best on switch). I do agree I want more big games on that calendar though.

Evan, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:34 (five years ago) link

yeah third party support will happen with time. game dev cycles are much longer than the year and change the console has been out, and wii u being a big flop meant that all the third parties were taking a wait and see approach and have to play catch up now.

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

and in the meantime, we get to enjoy ports of 5 year old games at full price 😶

||||||||, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:37 (five years ago) link

octopath traveler is a pretty substantial 3rd party exclusive on the way, as was Mario & rabbids. it's not like there's zero support. E3 is in a few weeks.

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link

$60 is a pretty fair price for a lot of video games, imo. The “I can’t believe I’m paying full price for a late port” thing just doesn’t make sense to me.

Anyway go play Zelda Josh what the hell are you waiting for

valorous wokelord (silby), Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:44 (five years ago) link

in unrelated news there's a demo of sushi striker up on the eshop today, been hearing good things about it

ciderpress, Thursday, 24 May 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

My daughter is playing it right now, and I'm in the middle of a couple of other things. But titles like Mario and Zelda, they are totally familiar to me. I mean, I love them, but I get it even before I start playing them. Honestly, Nintendo exclusive titles like that are why I have a Nintendo. However, stuff like Doom, that was totally novel to me. I've never played a game like that before. And when all these other games like God of War or whatever come out for other platforms, I watch a few clips and think, boy, they look really cool!

Speaking of power, why is Nintendo obsessed with releasing underpowered consoles?
