but find his Primus clip just delightful so it's a wash

always surprised by who you will go to bat for, I gotta say

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

just gonna go ahead and say it

grimes was a very typical vancouverite (looks, attitude, and everything) who still never fully realized til she moved to a big city (hello los angeles) her anti-establishment/radical socialist ideas have no place in the modern world -- it's vancouver's and mayor gregor robertson's "greenest city"/vision vancouver ploy

now she doesn't really want to handle the consequences of her ideas if she goes through with them from a practical conclusion/view

You guys are actually reducing an artist's entire aesthetic and belief system down to who she's fucking and acting like it makes you the progressive ones.

― Matt DC

She explicitly defended Musk & Tesla's very dubious business and labor practices on Twitter. Like Joan said, it's an explicit endorsement of politics many of her fans find repulsive.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 21:59 (five years ago) link

If someone @‘d me on Twitter to attack my signif. other, I’d probably defend/deflect as well

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

We should do a 'would you date Elon Musk?' poll. The truth will shock you!

pomenitul, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

I mean maybe she invites it by engaging a lot w/her fans online(?); and saying “i’ll address it in my next ama!” is kinda rofl-y – but I dunno how anyone would expect a person to respond to such tweets other than “Nunya beezwax” or a defense of some kind. (“You’re right, Twitter rando, he suxx, mea culpa!”?)

yeah so would I, but that's not the point. it doesn't ameliorate her understandably confused & upset fans.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 22:20 (five years ago) link

I thought her defense was the point (as you stated it) – if the point is simply they’re upset that’s she’s dating him, that’s a different kettle of fish (but if they @ her and she responds, it’s on them)

nvm grimes is good now

New: Musk’s tweet about losing stock options by unionizing could be grounds for Labor Board charges, former NLRB chair tells me: https://t.co/FAJcXXnjha “The employee is going to hear it as, ‘If I vote to unionize, stock options will no longer be an option.”’ https://t.co/zaBaHvejc7

F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 02:47 (five years ago) link

I am serious... I know celeb tweets are routinely covered as news, but wouldn’t have expected this batch to be (I may misunderestimate the public’s interest in figures like Grimes & Musk)

Guys you won't believe this but I heard from a very reliable source that the singer from Future Islands is dating Elizabeth Holmes!

Nah

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:10 (five years ago) link

Elizabeth Holmes should date Diplo

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:11 (five years ago) link

xxp given that Musk is widely regarded as IRL Tony Stark, the newsworthiness is a given.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:13 (five years ago) link

startled macropod (MatthewK), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:14 (five years ago) link

the thing is that Tony Stark is supposed to be cool and charming xpost

I know, right?

The Grimes thing gets treated like a joke, but speaking as a sexual abuse victim myself it's just so grim to see a person who's written about her experiences with assault as movingly as she did on "Oblivion" use it as justification for transit privatization & gentrification pic.twitter.com/IcvaGb4x2J

in real life lols at 'carcinogenic to sit in stopped cars on highway' + defending the union busting of an auto-maker.

i mean at least one can say that she made this whole thing very entertaining for the public.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:28 (five years ago) link

i'm telling you

she is influenced by the cities she has lived in and not only that but, this is what i was getting at earlier:

This is also an entirely typical attitude amongst people from Vancouver’s wealthy west side (where she grew up). Our transit system is fantastic compared to most cities; it also happens to be well used by “scary” folks from poorer neighbourhoods

Xp tweet simon posted exemplifies so much i hate about twitter

flopson, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:42 (five years ago) link

I mean how is she not doing what Sean describes in her tweet

Simon H., Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:45 (five years ago) link

As a private citizen it's one thing, as a defender of a private-transit profiteer...

Simon H., Wednesday, 23 May 2018 03:46 (five years ago) link

uh she’s still a private citizen(?)

as for her “overcrowded” line; metro rail ridership is actually down in L.A., apparently for a number of reasons; and the sparser crowds have led to greater safety concerns, which further depresses ridership...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 04:06 (five years ago) link

The 99B bus out to where her mom lives in Van are nightmarishly crowded it is true. You have to wait for like 4 buses before you can even get on. Underground electric mini-trains won't help much. Incidentally their family business is taxis.

everything, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 04:17 (five years ago) link

Anyway, I agree w/flopson that that tweet above is peak bad-Twitter, as it’s basically saying that the political trumps the personal.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 04:17 (five years ago) link

couldn't agree more, being skeved out by poor people is a personal choice and nobody should be judged on it or shamed for it

Thank you

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:07 (five years ago) link

haha, she never said she was skeeved out by poor people, that was y’all putting words in her mouth!

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:11 (five years ago) link

Honestly I have zero investment in Grimes, who she dates, or what opinions she holds, but it’s absurd that she or anyone would be demonized for anything she said in that (quite mild) series of tweets

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:15 (five years ago) link

making public statements

And when you say something on Twitter you become an official representative of what exactly?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:17 (five years ago) link

nothing. but criticism of a public statement in a public forum is fair game obv

flappy bird, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:26 (five years ago) link

I agree completely, but read Simon as implyig that being a “defender of a private-transit profiteer” made her something other than just an online person w/an opinion that you may or may not agree with (like any other)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:28 (five years ago) link

ya you guys are conflating la and vancouver public transportation which are two incredibly different beasts

it's true the b-line is super crowded but she isn't suggesting musk's loop as a solution to that

the loop is a solution to la transit which has other problems

for starters, i've heard the loop is like a "personal car," meaning you ride by yourself. he's calling them pods and the loop will transport 16 people at a time

thing is you get limited surface (ground level) space to wait to get into that pod. so it might take 5 minutes to get to your destination, but waiting to get inside it takes like 5 times that

right now the 2-mile stretch will cover an affluent area of the westside down to, i guess by la standards, more of a middle-class neighbourhood

elon musk is trying to get around the city of los angeles doing an eir (environmental impact review) because building tunnels in such close proximity to fault lines require a lot of research and exact building procedures. this research alone takes 3-4 years, yet he's saying he can build the whole thing by late this year, and he says he can build miles and miles of tunnels soon without public money

the details on how he is going to build the thing are so incredibly vague, that people are questioning whether he even knows what he's doing

here is the video of the "info session" he had in la, which provided very little detail:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwX9G38vdCE

and another vague news report: http://abc7.com/traffic/elon-musk-holds-rare-town-hall-to-address-la-tunnel-concerns/3490021/

anyway, i guess we should take it to the musk thread

F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:41 (five years ago) link

okay, i just saw the car, and it actually looks like a car, and it sits 16 people -- 21:00 in the video

F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:51 (five years ago) link

Didn’t a reporter ask how much it would cost to get from Van Nuys to LAX, and Musk replied, “Like, a dollar.”?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 05:56 (five years ago) link

fare is $1, as shown in the video, even from dtla to lax

but i mean, this is all conceptual stuff. he's footing the bill for the 2.7-mile loop under the 405

F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 23 May 2018 06:01 (five years ago) link

the details for that tunnel start at 28:00
