unless it was clogged, the water level in the American toilet would fall to the same level as the Australian toilet - the height of the bend in the drain pipe determines the water level

yeah old American shitters can have this problem. Last year in Portland ME we stayed in an airbnb that had this phenomenally uncomfortable- I’ll just stop here.
