reiterating maura's post way upthread: thea & the wild album is excellent shambhala

the new ep by eleanor k (formerly kyiki) is under the radar but very promising; this in particular gets really, really good around 1:30

Is there also a 'shambhala' video genre? Shining a torch round a carpark in New Zealand seems pretty shambhala.

saw Hatchie tonight and she was really excellent. she played the whole ep plus a few new ones (that were great) and did Kylie's Some Kind of Bliss too

this song by Sleep Thieves is both great, dramatic/atmospheric as fuck, and doesn't run out of ideas like so many similar tracks do

I just watched the Netflix queer teen comedy Alex Strangelove, whose soundtrack is like a treasure trove of this (sub?) genre, with MUNA's "I Know a Place" and Kristen Kontrol's "Show Me" being the tracks I immediately recognized in the film. Someone on Spotify made a playlist of all 52(!) used in the film, and while I'm guessing a good chunk of it isn't really Shambhalesque at all, it might at least be worth a scan through:

I could swear there was a rolling 2018 ambient/ethereal music thread but I can't find it. I've been obsessively listening to Mary Lattimore's newest this week at work. The whole album is great, but I could listen to the opening track for days:

YES! I've been tracking her for a couple years. I'm psyched for the album.

really like this

as far as shambhala albums go this year, I liked Mozaika by Onuka quite a lot, and I want to plug WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA - Galapagos to anyone who hasn't heard it, they're the best pop group in the world right now

I already posted something upthread, but this is my fave track from Priest's "The Lost Lions" EP. I'm getting some Washed Out vibes

My Brain On Love by Young Dreams has in 2018 given me constant cravings to hear it and constant vague dissatisfaction when actually hearing it. I can't think of many other songs like that. I therefore can't say whether it's great or not, but you should probably give it a go and decide for yourself

imago, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

Actually I'm quite enjoying it today. I think as long as it sticks to that chorus it's good, and it does stick to it a lot

imago, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link

the eliza shaddad album is lovely btw

That Young Dreams track that imago posted made my weekend.

xp yeah I listened to it about 8 times in a row and decided it's one of the songs of the year - how was I ever ambivalent?

imago, Monday, 12 November 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

the Young Dreams album is pretty enjoyable

I really like Sir Babygirl's run of singles this year, looking forward to her album next year

New Teen album due in March. Their pastiche is so amped-up that it stands apart from other similar bands.

TEEN's debut single "better" is one of my favourite pieces of music from the past 5? 10? years

so it makes me sad to say: this song sucks

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

TEEN's entire Love Yes album was kind of incredible and yeah this is nowhere near that level

is there a 2019 thread yet? the Self Esteem record is sounding fucking great so far

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Friday, 1 March 2019 04:04 (five years ago) link

the abovementioned Teen album is out today, I'm slightly nervous to check it

imago, Friday, 1 March 2019 12:43 (five years ago) link

on third listen I like the Self Esteem record a whole lot, especially for how thoroughly unhip and unconcerned with sounding current it is (but also not self-consciously retro or whatever). it's smarter than it seems at first, too - "Girl Crush" for example is actually a repudiation of that term. it could probably stand to have lost a couple of tunes, but nothing drags individually.

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Friday, 1 March 2019 18:49 (five years ago) link

I'll check it shortly! Teen was a massive disappointment tbh - they've ditched the non-sister and clearly lost any of her moderating influence, freeing them up to make a bad album

imago, Saturday, 2 March 2019 12:35 (five years ago) link

obsessed with the self esteem album, especially its singles

monotony, Wednesday, 6 March 2019 12:16 (five years ago) link

further listens have revealed it to be somewhat frontloaded

I have come across this apparently ungooglable band from compiling music at the end of 2019, I know nothing at all about them, videos seem to have very few views indeed.

They are called "Ice Cream"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVWRTLJeDZo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMo2s8quWkw

Does anyone know anything about them?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 22:01 (four years ago) link

Appears they’re from Toronto; I found a tranche of info with a little googling: http://exclaim.ca/amparticle/ice_cream_return_with_new_single_peanut_butter
