“the nude”
hard poll still
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 June 2018 00:41 (five years ago) link
The first two albums are wonderful amalgams of rawk, shoegaze and anthems but I rep hard for "Adam and Eve", which adds prog to the mix.
I tend to go with my instincts when polling old favorites - "Crank".

Whenever show me mary played i would just scratch my head and wonder, what persuaded them to add this? then they went full bush on the next album and i decided something bad had happened after “half life.”(not really, i didnt hate happy days as much as my friends, i was more amused. tho it’s true, i didnt ever hear later work).

"the nude" is the one I come back to after lo these many years

killer soaring chorus, but the verses are even better

“show me mary” is awesome
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 June 2018 01:34 (five years ago) link
i would like to vote for "strange fruit" and "chrome" together as one unit
― brimstead, Thursday, 14 June 2018 02:04 (five years ago) link
Wonderful album. Tuff choice, 'cept for "Show Me Mary" (which is a fine song, just not here,,, it's like when you see a really intense movie and some fluffy pop song starts playing when the credits roll). I go back to Ferment more often than Chrome, but listen to Levitation's Need For Not more than both combined.
CW came to my town on the Chrome Tour and their rendition of Indigo Is Blue still makes my chest thump.

This is one of my favourite albums of the 90's. Blasted it in the car a couple of months ago and it still slays.
"The Nude" is the emotional core of the album and my instincts still say it's the best song on here ... but "Crank" and "I Confess" are right up there. "Show Me Mary" has arguably aged better than anything on the album, it's a great singalong pop song that works well in any era.

Listening again. All I'll say is that for this not to be 'Broken Head', one of the later tracks is going to have to be really, really, really good
― imago, Thursday, 14 June 2018 10:55 (five years ago) link
yeah this is Broken Head
I don't like this album as much as their others (except Wishville ofc) - I think Happy Days has more great songs
― imago, Thursday, 14 June 2018 12:09 (five years ago) link
wild. this one’s only bettered by adam & eve for me
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 June 2018 12:13 (five years ago) link
It's still a good album - maybe it's better than the debut actually. I really like about half of Happy Days though
― imago, Thursday, 14 June 2018 12:20 (five years ago) link
Ah, they were the best band in the world when they recorded this (and again four years later). Still this is a pretty easy vote for "Strange Fruit," basically my favorite song ever. The part from 2:07-2:20 still gets me.

i voted for "the nude" but really i voted for the whole "strange fruit" -> "chrome" -> "nude" sequence

could go with half a dozen of these songs but i think i'll throw a vote to "Fripp", though the "lonely astronaut trapped with his dreams" atmosphere always makes me think it could also be called "Ursa Major Space Station."
― omar little, Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link
god i also love the last third of this which takes place in outer space
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link
oh lol xp
i know right -- and i feel like this album is very sci-fi overall with its bizarre slightly body horror lyrics popping up sporadically and those guitars occasionally roaring like they're ascending on a rocket.
also i still like the rob dickinson/bruce dickinson "cousins in torture device bands" thing.

i forgot how great this album is, have not finished it yet so still not voting. "Pain" is so wonderful but loved this today. i'm going to finish and play it again.

Relistened a couple times, and was surprised i choose the powergaze changeups in “i confess” over the rest. “broken head” was the one i had expected to choose.

Such a great album. "Ursa Major Space Station" has to be my vote here.

I remember this and loved "Fripp" so voting for it here.

Love the guitar sounds on this album so much.
Probably between “Pain”, “The Nude” and “Fripp” for me.

Surprised Kill Rhythm got no votes. It was my second choice.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 00:21 (five years ago) link
It was my second choice, too. Maybe that was the problem - just second choices.

How dare you. *creaks, dies*
Saw them play the Roxy in an early date for this album's tour cycle, with Slowdive opening, Souvlaki having just been released in the UK. So yes I have fond memories of that show, I do.

I have a story regarding Catherine Wheel and I think it was this tour.
My friends and I went to Tower Records Anaheim to buy concert tickets. It took forever to get help, it wasn't time of sale or anything just a regular night. Anyways, we finally get help to buy tickets and the employee just didn't want to be there. He kept saying things like Catherine must be special and sexist things. He hands us the tickets but didn't collect. I'm usually on the honest side of things but thought fuck this asshole, saw Catherine Wheel for free.

when I saw them on the wishville tour they opened with a really slow version of “crank”

Blasted it in the car a couple of months ago and it still slays.
Funny reading this comment of mine from five years ago. Why, you might ask? Because I blasted it in the car a couple of months ago (for the first time in about five years) and guess what? It's still an awesome album and one of the best of the 90's!

This revive inspired me to put together a comp of their A-sides. 16 tracks, just under 70 minutes, a great ride - why the hell haven't they done this themselves?
