I don't see what that has to do with anything

Colonel Poo, Friday, 15 June 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link

Any idea why?

the rules in Parliament mean it only requires one MP to shout "object" to block a bill's progress.

Any excuse to subvert democracy.

nashwan, Friday, 15 June 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

Chope is a real piece of work, he even tried to block the pardoning of Alan Turing.

We need to make this happen.

I can only assume we now know what Sir Christopher Chope’s main hobby is. I think we should name it Choping in honour of him https://t.co/o8yaVIZDlu

is chope one of those upper class names that iis actually pronounced challope?

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Friday, 15 June 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

This charming man...

On 12 March 2010, he was responsible for the blocking of a bill to protect poor countries from "vulture funds", despite his party's support for the bill.[14]

On 11 October 2011, Chope raised an eleventh-hour objection to the Hillsborough debate taking place because he believed a debate about MPs' pensions was more important. Cries of "shame" echoed around the chamber and Labour MP Jamie Reed said that the perpetrator should be "named and shamed" for raising the objection.[15]

In December 2013 Chope objected[16][17] to the second reading of the Alan Turing (Statutory Pardon) Bill in the House of Commons. Because of this, the Government decided to act under the royal prerogative of mercy. On 24 December 2013 Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a free pardon.[18][19]

He came under criticism in late 2014 for repeatedly blocking a bill that would ban the use of wild animals in circus performances, justifying his actions by saying "The EU Membership Costs and Benefits bill should have been called by the clerk before the circuses bill, so I raised a point of order".[20]

On 28 November 2014 Chope, a private landlord, filibustered a Liberal Democrat bill with cross party support intended to make revenge evictions an offence.[21]

In October 2015, Chope joined fellow Conservative members Philip Davies and David Nuttall in extended speeches, known as a filibuster, against a private member's bill that would have placed restrictions on hospital parking charges for carers. Their actions caused the bill to run out of time.[22]

On 15 June 2018 Chope blocked the passage of a private member's bill that would have made upskirting a specific offence by calling "object" in the House of Commons, which drew immediate criticism from fellow MPs, including some in his own party. Chope also forced a delay to final debate on the 'Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Bill', or Seni's Law.[23]

We can be herpes (Tom D.), Friday, 15 June 2018 18:50 (five years ago) link

I would pay to watch him getting beaten to a pulp and then boiled in hot oil, hopefully he already he blocked the member's bill to ban this type of punishment for the crime of coin clipping, or something like that!

calzino, Friday, 15 June 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

The secret barrister said that Chope admitted to not knowing what upskirting was. There have been so many cases like this, as people have posted, but this time there seem to be just as many Tories angry. The official party account and the PM’s account have already put out statements saying they do want the law to pass, and the heckler in parliament was a Tory.

I’m not really sure why they’ve decided this particular outcry deserves response but I’d guess they’re concerned about polling with women? The Tories beat labour soundly in 2015 with both men and women but last year that flipped and Labour made huge gains with female voters: http://www.britishelectionstudy.com/bes-findings/women-men-and-the-2017-general-election-by-jane-green-and-chris-prosser

If I had to go out on a limb, I’d say that the ongoing murmurs of Brexit not being delivered means they’re also worried about losing former UKIP voters (who BES also reports as being majority male), and they’ll can’t afford to lose both sources of support? Only a daft theory though.

gyac, Friday, 15 June 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

I have a question about incitement laws because I'm not clear about this. If somebody said that Philip Davies and whoever that other cunt was should be brutally murdered that would probably be incitement right? Just wondering.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 15 June 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

I think that most human beings agree that upskirting is abusive and grim and this is the one thing everyone was supposed to agree on and it's just terrible PR for the Tories for their MP and to be the one to torpedo it on an abstract point of principle (yeah right).

Matt DC, Friday, 15 June 2018 22:55 (five years ago) link

I don’t really understand this either? I would have thought it had been cracked down on after Parnell et al successfully obstructed legislation this way (yeeeeo) but why turn down a useful tool I guess? Funny that we don’t allow it though!

Procedures committee did recommend banning it fwiw.

gyac, Friday, 15 June 2018 23:11 (five years ago) link

Chope was apparently unaware of what ‘upskirting’ is and also shouted down a bill making it an offence to attack police dogs and horses so I assume he just objects to new laws in general - though that libertarianism obviously doesn’t extend to gay marriage, etc.

The government’s opposition to cannabis oil is ridiculous and should hurt them.

I’ve written to the Home Secretary urging him to allow legal prescriptions of cannabis oil for medical purposes.

After PM's speech with no wifi here's short version - 1. NHS getting a lot of extra £££ in exchange for reform 2. PM won't say who specifically is going to pay 3. No 10 stands by claim that Brexit dividend can be source of some of £££, uncertain at best, misleading at worst

You have to spell it out to appreciate the enormity: this government would rather people die than risk an increase in access to a very accessible non-lethal substance. You'd think some public-spirited journalist might want to make big deal of that.

this is good news, I think. But I had a verbal blast at an MS nurse last week who tried to say the criteria for the mobility element of PIP had changed and was encouraging the partner to apply to an MS charity for a mobility scooter rather than re-apply for PIP. I told her she was talking crap and the downright arbitrary and dishonest nature of PIP assessments isn't a criteria ffs!
