New interview/feature in Stereogum makes it sound like quite something.
While the title track and “Bastardizer” are laser-lit, howl-and-point anthems that could conceivably elevate them to the status of alt-emo festival staples like Manchester Orchestra, Circa Survive, and pre-downfall Brand New — all of whom they’ve opened for — there’s not much contemporary comparison to the nine-minute ambient odyssey “Five Cups” or the IDM-goes-post-hardcore frenzy of “Gameshark” or “Heartbeats” merging swirling house rhythms with atmospheric post-rock guitars.

pre-downfall Brand New
certainly a way to put this
psyched for the record though, it is getting majorly hyped
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link
though usually the records that ian really enthusiastically hypes i end up being pretty cool on (ex. harmlessness, goodness, surprised the foxing record doesn't end in "ness")

the new Mom Jeans songs are really fun, and they're touring w/ awakebutstillinbed so I might have to go see that

hell yeah
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link
They must have multiple vocalists? The guy on "Wales" is a dead ringer for Bry Webb.
― Simon H., Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link
i think it's all the one dude
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:51 (five years ago) link
but then i've only just gotten into this band with the new record lol
yeah it's the same guy! he has a bizarre range; there are moments on the new record where he sounds like matt berninger and gord downie combined

super weird, also made me realize I really miss the constantines

made me realize I really miss the constantines
otm
For anyone interested, this excellent live Restorations set features most of their best older tunes plus provides a great view of their instrumentation (incl. one main vocalist, two backing, & drummer making drummer faces).

despite really liking the band I've never been able to shake the view that they basically come off like a bunch of dads who bought cool equipment with money from their day jobs and somehow made v good grownup dad-indie rock
― I want to change my display name (dan m), Thursday, 28 June 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link
sounds about right tbh

this foxing song sounds nothing like brand new to me, but it's pretty solid
― k3vin k., Saturday, 30 June 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link
Speaking of Weakerthans, did anyone hear the solo record from John? I think the weakerthans disbanded awhile back
― Jang Mo Jib (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link
winter wheat? it's great
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 June 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link
Winter Wheat is wonderful. Samson is a terrific lyricist.
Digging that Charmer record. Good looking out. Really does scratch a very specific itch.

john's put out TWO solo records guys!
― sean gramophone, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link
the first one is less good than winter wheat iirc
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 14:42 (five years ago) link
maaaybe less emo than before (hence why I bumped the indiepop thread initially) but the new Trust Fund is so good https://trustfund.bandcamp.com
― imago, Thursday, 5 July 2018 11:02 (five years ago) link
the new Mom Jeans throws in just enough fun surprises (guitar heroics, horns, multipart songs) to distinguish itself
― Simon H., Friday, 6 July 2018 12:33 (five years ago) link
The first John K Samson album has The Last And, a Virtute-level hearttugger, inspired by The Simpsons' Krabappel/Skinner romance. Stylus has an article about some of that album's song origins. A favorite lyricist, love his small details and viewpoints.
