Saw Washington Post critic rave on twitter about his DC show. My admittedly quick listen to his latest recording has not yet won me over to thinking that his gospel meets Antony and Sam Smith approach is as great as some think, but I will listen more.

Several of my favorite writers like it. I don't. I'm getting ANOHNI vibes: well-meant tunelessness with a few good beats.

huh i remember enjoying the ep but the album is i guess not for me

album kinda washed over me but I'm kicking myself that I missed out on the chance to see him at a tiny venue here, I bet that was special

'Blisters' was definitely more immediately arresting to me, but 'Soil' is definitely a slow-burner. Seeing him perform the album songs live revealed new aspects and made it make more sense to me. He's definitely a singular talent with so much more to come. (And for my taste, a much much more appealing voice than Anhoni).

We’re seeing him in a couple of weeks — had wanted to catch him last year opening for Perfume Genius but no luck. I take Alfred’s ANOHNI comparison on board but I think swf is sharper in comparison.

Definitely wouldn't call the new album 'tuneless'.

HIs melodies meander? Does that make more sense? I'd love to see him live to note the contrasts.

Yeah I know what you're saying, there are some hooks in there too though (like 'cherubim'). It feels like the kind of record that washes over me at first but makes me want to listen again, and gets catchier with familiarity rather than having instant hooks (kinda like the Moses Sumney record).

"A Comma" acts as the first taste of serpentwithfeet's new EP, Apparition, due in late April, and produced entirely by Wynne Bennett (Janelle Monae, Tayla Parx, Twin Shadow). While crafting the EP serpentwithfeet asked himself one question: "What ghosts am I welcoming into my house?"

Janelle Monae tweeted out a Pitchfork article about the new EP... Is it possible someone as sui generis as serpentwithfeet could get "big"?

I would be thrilled to see it.

That's just glorious. The dramatic, baroque darkness of the first EP consumed me when--but it's honestly just thrilling to see serpentwithfeet leave that behind and embrace this sort of radiant warmth. It's honestly a bold shift, given darkness is an easier sell in the slightly-underground-music world I think he still operates within. I love it and cannot wait for this new album.

A blissed-out serpentwithfeet album of joy... Circa 'Blisters' and how in love with its darkness, I couldn't have known by Feb 2021, there's nothing I'd need more...

Love it. Although I was reaaally hoping that a real trumpet was going to come in doubling the mouth trumpet part.

(only because it would be a good joke, it seems like one of those classic 'meant to be replaced later' parts that gets left in, and it would be funny if they got real horns but still left it in)

incidentally i DID see him live, back when there were too many live shows to keep track of. He was great, totally clarified the gospel influence and did lots of back and forth with the crowd and moments of joy. looking forward to seeing him again.

Got my LP copy today but my record player is packed for a move. So gotta wait for the Bandcamp download on Friday. Can't wait!

And agreed--seeing him live (in Boston, 2019) was one of the best and most joyful shows I've been to in recent years.

Yeah “Same Size Shoe” was already one of my favorite songs of the year but on first listen the album lives up to it.

all killer no filler imo

new take on You Don't Own Me wasn't doing much for me but the segue into canopy is great

Is anyone else getting Bjork Vespertine vibes from Fellowship? The sort of microhouse sound and layers of vocals remind me a lot of that album.
