I will say though despite finding Aquaria super bland and devoid of charisma and largely uniqueness, I was genuinely surprised at how great her lip syncs were. She had a lot of subtle touches that felt really smart.

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 2 July 2018 12:12 (five years ago) link

Yeah same

This season was a lot of charismatic queens with no follow-through, and some extremely talented queens burdened with profound unlikeability

I didn't like Miz Cracker at first but she ended up being one of my all-time faves

the best thing about that finalé was Gus Kenworthy.

^^^^ a pretty unapologetic takedown

RuPaul’s racial philosophies, which include a classic white American “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” maxim and a generational distance from the queens who compete on her show, are indicative of her deep-seated respectability politics. The “advice” she offered the Vixen was just a stone’s throw away from the notorious language once espoused by Bill Cosby, or Charles Barkley, or Ronald Reagan — exhortations to black personal responsibility and rules of behavioral comportment; it implied that the Vixen, in her loudmouthed navigation of the world and her insistence on addressing racism, is lacking in self-discipline and respectability.

Too often the burden of civility and amenity falls on the backs of those enduring oppression. For RuPaul to demand that the Vixen engage in a culture of silence, to expect her to choreograph her anger in order to appear less dissonant, less threatening, is to rob her of her voice for the sake of disproving the white myth of black inferiority. There is no “right” way to comport oneself in the midst of inequity. Such archaic criticisms directly contradict everything the art of drag itself stands for. When has protest art, or protest at large, ever been courtly?

(Also floats the idea of giving Ru the axe and replacing her with Asia. Like that'll happen.)

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Sunday, 8 July 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

One thing I've seen repeated in all these pieces is that RuPaul is promoting a culture of silence and I think that's totally misreported just to fit their narratives. When Ru said that the Vixen could chose to not say anything, she was clearly refering to the drama between Aquaria and Miz Cracker. The Vixen didn't have to bring it up, but she decided to stir the pot.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link

I could accept that. I can not accept Ru's reaction to Asia in the reunion, though. Ru tends to conflate two seemingly similar but very different narratives of being a star and being the star of your own life. I can see the first of those two requiring you to casually throw people in your life away if they do not serve your needs, but I'm damned if I think it makes sense for the latter of those narratives.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:41 (five years ago) link

Mm. And good piece there too.

Now that Drag Race Thailand is on WOWPresents Plus I may take the dive there -- but in a little bit, it was almost six months of DR stuff in general this year and I need a breather.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2018 16:46 (five years ago) link

Oh I agree, Asia was completely right. A lot of Ru's reactions were problematic and made me cringe. (x-post)

I just got around to reading this in the print paper: Jinkx Monsoon on RuPaul's influence on her life and career:

Willam and Alaska have a new Drag Race recap show called Race Chaser and they are starting w S1 now that it’s finally available

This week’s ep includes a brief but hilarious interview with Shannel & she confirms that her headpiece falling off during the lipsync was 100% staged <3 And she throws majestic casual shade at Alaska & it’s EVERYTHING

They also have a regular recurring Tammie Brown segment <3

Oh jesus. This will be a must listen.

it’s very enjoyable, Willam & Alaska have good chemistry

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 4 August 2018 02:57 (five years ago) link

Yeah this has been fun, caught every episode so far -- can't wait until they hit their respective seasons, but they've already been sharing a LOT of new behind-the-scenes stuff.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 August 2018 06:14 (five years ago) link

Where is season 1 available, please?

i just learned the most amazing bts gossip
Did u guys know that Shannel & Derrick Barry used to date?

how awesome is that

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 August 2018 01:52 (five years ago) link

Bianca generated a lot of controversy at Montreal Pride last night. During the outdoors show she was hosting, she joked about Blair Saint-Clair's rape and rape in general. I thought it was shocking in a Bianca kind of way, but a lot of the 12 000 plus crowd was offended and booed her. Fierté Montréal made an official statement today to appologise and dissociate themselves with "some of the content that was said last night".

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 17 August 2018 22:26 (five years ago) link

i was at the pride show but left before the rape comments - bianca definitely on brutally top form, making cruel/hilarious digs against all and every comer...

sean gramophone, Friday, 17 August 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

Per VG's comment there, Race Chasers is unsurprisingly now a totally essential listen. The episode with Ongina guesting was next level for the background detail there.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 August 2018 00:35 (five years ago) link

i am still kinda outraged that ongina didn’t actually get to be a spokesperson for MAC! jerks

her story abt seeing Shanel for the first time & asking if she was a host was adorable

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 18 August 2018 02:58 (five years ago) link

Latest Race Chasers great as ever, and of course more behind the scenes stuff in general (Willam says that Sharon didn't shower on her season but that she was into it and they made out -- Alaska sounded unsurprised).

Meantime!

I'm catching up Race Chasers and lol at the interview with Shannel where their connection drops and reconnects after like 10 seconds and Shannel is STILL talking.

Cold Stone Cream Austin (Leee), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

yeah everything about that interview was pure gold

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

honestly i didnt think i could love her more but Race Chasers has given me a whole new level of appreciation

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

Alaska and Willam are a perfect pairing, because one is a total acolyte and the other a total skeptic and they’re both equally smart about how the biz works

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 01:28 (five years ago) link

exactly. i think as well it’s a great match bc they both seem to have a pretty amazing work ethic in life, not only for their own drag, but performing in general & gigs of any kind so it’s not like 90% of podcasts where they think the idea & their personality is enough, and then just faff through it. they’re both actually really trying to provide good content while still being themselves & it shows.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 01:42 (five years ago) link

I'm going to this https://bushwig.com/ this weekend and am gonna see Alaska, Sasha Velour, Aja, and Dida Ritz, and maybe Thorgy? also Lady Bunny

Best quote from todays Race Chasers, was Willam on Rebecca Glasscock:

“That’s not even fashion. Dont’t call it that. Those are CLOTHES.”

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 6 September 2018 01:22 (five years ago) link

Hahah yeah that was great.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 September 2018 04:14 (five years ago) link

It was interesting when they pointed out how for at least the first two seasons everyone was mostly off-the-rack with their wardrobe choices but now most queens wouldn’t even walk into the ~workroom~ in anything off-the-rack let alone on stage.
(Unless you’re ChiChi DeVayne)
(and I say that from a place of love)

My god, I think I've found the most shamelessly negligible of all showbiz awards...

Yaaas!!! Thank you @GoldDerby Awards!!! #DragRace snatched the award for Reality Competition Program and Mama @RuPaul snatched the award for Reality Host!! 🏆Come through!!! pic.twitter.com/KcgWPzUO0N

Nag Reddit (Leee), Friday, 7 September 2018 19:34 (five years ago) link

went to Werq the World last night in montreal
great show (although give the ticket prices, i'd sure hope so)
Aquaria, Valentina, Violet Chachki, Eureka, Asia O'Hara, Kameron, Kim Chi, hosted by Bob the Drag Queen

to everyone's surprise (?) violet chachki stole the show
though i gotta say that one of eureka's numbers was amazing (and i hate eureka)

aquaria was great, really inhabits herself

asia did a piece about dying butterflies

sean gramophone, Saturday, 8 September 2018 17:13 (five years ago) link

Might have been said before but Aquaria is the Valentina dream realized. She really exposed what Valentina was lacking this last season.

Also, picking up on Sean's post just above, Violet is starting to really come into her own here a couple more years down the line. She and Katya did the latest Fashion Photo Ruview and my girlfriend and I think she pretty easily stole the show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tj4z5-GxMM

My girlfriend also adding that in terms of look and absolutely cutting right to the chase and telling you what she thinks, she feels Violet has got some classic Boy George vibes about now.

There's no fight. Eureka inserted herself into a situation when she should've just sat there and ate her rice.
