Some typical May stuff in there — "Freedom of movement will end; we will have a mobility framework". Don't totally understand their thinking on restricting services; Mode 5 makes up an important chunk of the economy, I thought.

That "we'll collect EU tariffs" plan still seems to be the thing it'll break apart on. Can't see the EU accepting that without also accepting NI becoming the global centre for smuggling.

stet, Friday, 6 July 2018 23:24 (five years ago) link

Everyone is still reporting it weirdly. Shit like "ministers have signed up to a plan to create a free trade area" really needs to read "Ministers have signed up to a plan to seek a free trade area". The Tory party agreeing is what should have happened before A50. This is still just getting to the starting line.

stet, Friday, 6 July 2018 23:26 (five years ago) link

Hasn’t free trade without free movement already been rejected by the EU. I was going to say that this will last as long as it take the EU to state that but the moggites will probably come out swinging long before that.

So back to normal by Sunday morning.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 6 July 2018 23:36 (five years ago) link

I think they're trying to be craftier/shittier than that. The wording is that they "will end free movement, giving the UK back control over how many people enter the country". WHICH WE ALWAYS HAD. The "free movement" in that sentence is a Mail-conjured phantom. Member states have always retained the right to control the numbers that enter seeking work, and those who can stay for longer than three months.

The fourth freedom that is the EU red line is the freedom of movement for workers, and the "mobility framework" they're proposing sounds just like that.

So, as far as I can tell, Brexit was driven by a racist/legimate concerns agenda predicated on the idea that we had no control of immigration, which we did. We'll now leave, at enormous upheaval and cost, and end up with near enough exactly the status quo on immigration.

stet, Friday, 6 July 2018 23:51 (five years ago) link

sorry, I meant "persons" there, not "workers". Same sense, though. The Tory wording is "a mobility framework so that UK and EU citizens can travel to each other's territories and apply to study and work". Which is FoMoP so far as I understand it.

I suspect that Boris, DoubleD and Adam Weritty’s bff will collectively resign in a few days.

https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/elections/2018/07/would-labour-be-ahead-polls-if-it-opposed-brexit

some common sense here from S Bush, but most the centrists who bash Corbyn every day for not opposing brexit know very well if he did it would spell his end as Labour leader, which would suit them fine.

calzino, Saturday, 7 July 2018 07:23 (five years ago) link

I think for some of them (eg Alistair Campbell) it's pretty much the whole point.

Matt DC, Saturday, 7 July 2018 10:02 (five years ago) link

some of them lay it on a bit thick, like a certain Grauny writing ILXer, who is very opposed to austerity but unfortunately because of his deeply held convictions about the EU, spends every bastard day bashing the only trustworthy anti-austerity candidate!

calzino, Saturday, 7 July 2018 10:15 (five years ago) link

I confess that I've been totally zoned out of the Brexit disaster for pretty much all of this year - and I'm someone who is interested in politics, what about the poor sods who aren't? Anyway, the prospect of it blowing up the Conservative Party is almost all that interests me now, even though I know in my heart of hearts that's not going to happen because they are Cockroach Tory Party of Cockroach UK and could survive a supernova.

calzino, Sunday, 8 July 2018 09:32 (five years ago) link

That seems to be what Johnson, etc are betting on. No point in resigning yet when there is every chance the EU will reject the proposals.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Sunday, 8 July 2018 09:34 (five years ago) link

At some point they might have to admit that there is no one form of Brexit that can get through the Conservative Party, the Commons, the the Lords and the EU. That point probably represents the end of this government in its current form so no surprise they're kicking that can down the road.

Matt DC, Sunday, 8 July 2018 11:39 (five years ago) link

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Sunday, 8 July 2018 23:10 (five years ago) link

Me too. Can this government last? They don't have the votes (on the usual arithmetic) to bring it down, so in theory it can, but how? Is May going to take charge of everything as they resign one by one, until it is just her, alone, delivering The Will?

If it does collapse, I wonder if the successor govt will try to revoke A50 and blame it all on the May admin. This is all too nuts for me now.
