Meeting the worst Foreign Secretary we’ve ever had amongst the destruction of Hurricane Irma in Anguilla. Disinterested and out of his depth he cared nothing for our situation. Good riddance pic.twitter.com/udzzpoZ7OW

Unless Brexit is back on track by March 2019, I will seriously consider putting my name forward to return as @UKIP leader. The will of 17.4m voters must be carried out. pic.twitter.com/BNLtA6xPiJ

We all know that Boris Johnson’s decision to quit is absolutely not about one man and his personal ambitions, but I’m struggling to think of another time where a Secretary of State called in the photographers to record the moment a resignation letter was signed. https://t.co/35FEuuh9dV

Announcing this arsehole's resignation before he got the chance to do so will go down as the greatest single achievement of May's goverment.

When a world class tosser like Max Hastings describes you in despicable terms, you really must have to push the boundaries of arseholedom to new levels to earn that!

And the blows keep coming:

Conservative party vice chairs Maria Caulfield and Ben Bradley quit over Theresa May's Chequers Brexit plan https://t.co/eu5WbZqyvi

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:07 (five years ago) link

oh dear how sad

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:12 (five years ago) link

there are two chairmen of Tory vice?

koogs, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link

Both have warned they will lose their seats unless the Tories deliver Brexit.

Ms Caulfield supported Leave in the EU referendum, and Mr Bradley backed Remain.

Caulfield is the MP for Lewes and Lewes voted remain in the referendum iirc?

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

Bradley, elected in Mansfield last year – and is a remainer –faced criticism after comments emerged showing he had once suggested that unemployed people should opt for free vasectomies rather than continuing to have children they could not afford to support.

In a blogpost, Bradley claimed that the country would be soon “drowning in a vast sea of unemployed wasters” if workless families had four or five children while others limited themselves to one or two.

A month later, Bradley was forced to apologise to Jeremy Corbyn and make a donation to charity over a tweet making claiming the Labour leader “sold British secrets to communist spies”.

am sure this scrote will be sorely missed

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link

wasn't bradley also the tory youth weapon lol: ie in charge of youth-facing social media strategy

Neuer write off the germans (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

it's more likely her remainer constituency will all go back to voting for the libdems again tbh, good riddance either way though

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

Caulfield was the Conservative vice-chair for women.

Currently, women in England and Wales have to prove to two medical professionals that carrying on with the pregnancy is detrimental to their health or wellbeing, before having a termination.

Without permission, abortion remains a criminal offence under the 1967 Abortion Act.

In March last year, a Ten Minute Rule Bill called for changes to the law, to prevent the prosecution of women who end their own pregnancies without permission.

The proposed changes would have meant women who, for example, order abortion pills online and self-administer would not risk prosecution.

However, Ms Caulfield spoke out against the bill saying the idea would leave young women less safe and "embolden" men who force women into abortion.

She said it would become a "charter for extreme abortion practices", including sex-selective abortion.

In 2015, Ms Caulfield voted with the government opposing the removal of the so called tampon tax, currently levied on female sanitary products.

Caulfield announced she would like a debate on reducing the abortion upper time limit which currently stands at 24 weeks. She argued a debate was needed on bringing the time limit down — erroneously claiming the UK has some of the most liberal abortion laws in Europe.

On 14 Dec 2016:
Maria Caulfield voted against calling on the Government to ensure women and protected groups are not disproportionally impacted by tax and benefit changes and against publication of a gender equality strategy to improve the position of women.

Hostile environment policy “paused”, Javid claims.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jul/11/windrush-uk-government-pauses-hostile-immigration-policies

UCL threatening to fine staff members, lecturers, etc £20k if they fail to implement immigration spot checks on students is an excellent example of why tinkering around the edges to avoid another Windrush scandal is virtually meaningless. It’s baked into public and private institutions, from universities to letting agents, that they’re on the hook for failing to be aggressive enough. “Hostile environment “ doesn’t mean government data sharing, it means devolving immigration enforcement to anyone with a modicum of power over anyone else, and putting the fear of god into them that if they fail to do it correctly, they will be penalised.
