Taking non-prescribed pillz (phaaarmies) freaks me right the fuck out. There is no way to know what the dosage is like, or if it's right for you.

That said, Xanax is supposed to "turn your brain off" and/or "stop your mind from racing" according to those I've talked to about it. I've never taken it.

I bet, if you really wanted to, you could get some sort of anti-anxiety medicine prescribed if the dentist makes you nervous.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

would the xanax interact with the anaesthesia for fillings though? i suppose that could be looked up...

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

if you took a low dose or cut it in half, it would probably be okay. seems like lots of people take anti-anxiety stuff like xanax before dental work...

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll do more research. I doubt I'll try it. This coworker got them from a friend whose husband is a doctor.. or something. So they weren't even prescribed for her.

I have high anxiety in general. My brain should be turned off every morning.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Ta Ta. It's time to go try out this zen doctor of wonders.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

and if your brain was turned off, you maybe wouldn't have to deal with the annoyingness of your coworkers!

xp good luck with the doc

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd get the drogas from the dentist, if I were you, just to make sure you don't encounter any interaction/dosage problems. While I've never asked for it, I have been told that dentists prefer to have calm patients and will dope your ass up if need be.

xpost - good luck indeed!

My dentist gave me Valium and it worked wonders, but I had to take two. I'm sort of difficult to sedate. Anyone who knows me can see how this might be true.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Tee hee.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I take to sedatives like a duck to water.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Girl, you know it's true.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Today, one of those Save the Children assholes talked to me through a traffic cone. I suggested that he cram the traffic cone up his ass. He said, "Oh, come on now! Have a good day!"

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never taken sedatives...wait, I took one for dentist-related stress once but instead of putting me to sleep it just made me feel really tall and the wrong size. I walked into the corners of things for a few hours, and kept looking at the floor like it was too far away.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

neat!

...made me feel really tall and the wrong size. I walked into the corners of things for a few hours, and kept looking at the floor like it was too far away.

This very much describes how I see things without my glasses on.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Recipe for total happiness: 1 Valium + 1 glass red wine. Just lay back and let the fuzziness take over.

Re traffic cone guy: Jenny, can we kill that man at the same time we kill everyone who has ever said to me "C'mon, let's see more of that pretty smile"?

I would have enjoyed the flakey feeling more if I weren't having multiple teeth extracted.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Also how I walk into things. Worse, I tend to trip on curbs, or overcompensate so much trying to step on them that I look insane.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

A little light afternoon reading. You know, I used to think that funeral parlor employees having sex with corpses was all a big joke, or something that never actually happened. Apparently, not only does it happen all the time, but has happened all throughout history.

Ew.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

there was some sort of ill. pirg lady on my street the other day, she asked if i paid my utility bills or my landlord did. i told her in a very huffy tone that i was homeless.

Re: Re traffic cone guy: Jenny, can we kill that man at the same time we kill everyone who has ever said to me "C'mon, let's see more of that pretty smile"?

yep, same goes for random folks (esp. in elevators) who tell you to "smile!" when you apparently look down. I've never had the courage to say, "go fuck yourself. i always look like this."

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

This does not happen to men. Huh. Go figure.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:00 (seventeen years ago) link

One of the greatest waitresses at the place I worked in college had a great one once. We were all out after a particularly brutal night of work, and she was venting about some asshole customer. A drunk jerk in the bar said something to the effect of "If you smile pretty, honey, you'd get better tips." She turned around, put on a beautiful, beaming smile (she was very attractive) and said "Fuck you, buddy!"

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:05 (seventeen years ago) link

OK all you "I punctuate the British way" freaks:

wtf is "ipod music?"
-- hstencil (hstenc!...), September 12th, 2006 2:52 PM. (hstencil) (later) (link)

Agree this is wrong? (We can always come together on question marks and exclamation points.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

i think it is wrong. but i'm morally superior to all of you so get bent.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

wrong to my eyes, anyway. i had no idea that was standard american punctuation. fuck if i know these things, i don't bother to capitalize.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not standard American punctuation. I'm just saying I disagree with Kenan, Julia, and Otto on the period outside the quotes, but I agree with you on question marks outside the quotes.

This is standard:

This is "iPod music."
WTF is "iPod music"?
OMG it's "iPod music"!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i like being non-standard.

it's "ipod muisc". it just looks right that way.

or music, even.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm sure you know more about what's proper than i do when it comes to punctuation (truthfully, most 4th graders probably do too) but it seems to me that the quotation marks become part of the phrase and therefore must come before the punctuation mark. but, like julia, i can't be bothered to capitalize so take that with a grain of salt. or a gram of coke, whatever.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i enjoy snorting coke and discussing punctuation.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

let's hang out!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

UCP style says that if the punctuation (question mark, in this case) is part of the quote it goes inside the marks, and otherwise outside. I am not sure how this works for parentheses.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

What about the comma? I can never remember.

eg: I thought I heard someone say "dyspepsia", but I was mistaken.
-or-
I thought I heard someone say "dyspepsia," but I was mistaken.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd say "take it outside" toots.

(sorry for calling you toots).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I like putting the period outside the quotes, but I always second-guess myself on this stuff.

What about this sentence: It can start with one good band that brings a style to a city, or keeps a regular gig, or just sparks people, and then kids say "YES, I wanna do THAT".

Should I have added another period after THAT?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

It would be kind of awesome if I walked down the way a little bit and got a copyeditor to answer all this stuff.

Oh, I'm not sure about commas, either. I suppose I could look it up...

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

For some strange reason, I recall learning that it went inside. That being said, I'm easily confused.

(it's okay. you're not the only one who calls me "toots.")

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Personally, I always put punctuation inside quotes, parentheses, etc.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

hey did i mention the free cigarette guys were at the note friday? i scored 6 packs. OF KOOLS!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

What about the comma? I can never remember.

Commas go inside the quotes. Why this is different than a period, I do not know.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes! I did remember something correctly!

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Personally, I always put punctuation inside quotes, parentheses, etc.

For parenthesis, unless the parenthesis contain a full sentence, this is always wrong.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

By what standard? Kenan Manual Of Style? :)

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Example of wrongness:

I rather enjoyed the sandwich (though I did not care for the chips.)

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, I looked it up, and of course we're both partially right and wrong. Like I said earlier, staying consistent is key no matter what.

That said, I am glad I am not a copy editor sometimes.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Partially right and wrong? Plz share the link.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

so if you have a full sentence inside parens, do you use two periods? that seems like it would look silly. but it would seem awkward otherwise as well.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

(So glad to have missed the "debate"!)

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

No, no. Having a full sentence totally encapsulated in parentheses, punctuation and all, is perfectly alright.

xpost Eazy gets it!
