^^^ This was the moment where I first thought that Kyle Mooney sucks really bad.

Yerac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

Yeah, that makes me think bad things about Mooney fans.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

Carey did you know Kali is a huge a fan of Kyle? For what that's worth.

He's nothing special in most skits that don't clearly involve his input, but I think his characters and skits and especially videos w/ Beck are great.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 19:00 (five years ago) link

I only really know him from SNL. Something about him makes me mad. I also don't like mumblecore movies.

Lol it is shame upon shame that I have brought to my family by finally introducing ‘judging people for their taste in culture’ to ILX, which has withstood it for so long.

This past season may be the first season that I thought Jost and Che were ok doing Weekend Update.

Yerac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

they're the most consistently strong part of the show imo. Jost is great, the Norm influence is clear & appreciated

flappy bird, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

Jost was completely awful in his first season or two, but has since improved dramatically. And Che's unscripted asides are reliably funny.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 16:14 (five years ago) link

two months pass...

it must be noted how poorly SNL acquitted itself last night at the emmys. che and jost were remarkably tepid, and lacked chemistry. the armisen/rudolph thing bombed (this is the first time I've ever thought maya was bad in anything!). (I wish armisen would just go away, how does he still get work?) the whole program was a bore.

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

Armisen, like Jimmy Fallon, strikes me as an unfunny person who tries really hard to be seen as funny.

crüt, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link

Imo Armisen is a sort of twisted straight man a la Will Ferrell. That is, his characters are huge and ridiculous, but what makes them funny (or "funny," depending) is that they are played straight and he doesn't break. The "humor" comes from watching people react and keep it together around them.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link

Armisen's cannibal character on The Last Man on Earth was hilarious.

DJI, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

I think he's pretty talented, I just don't know how he's avoided persona non grata amid all the weird rumors/accusations

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

I was just thinking about that. He had a wave of accusations and intimations that he didn't quite duck that came out a couple of years before the me-too thing started.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

I’m generally pro SNL and give it a lot is slack but the emmys bombed hard. 1 or 2 Adlibs from Che were ok.

Mulaney thanking Steve Martin and Martin Steve was my favorite joke though.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

Rudolph was in Away We Go which is the worst movie ever made so

he also unceremoniously dumped his wife elisabeth moss

Elisabeth Moss is sounding off again on her marriage to "Saturday Night Live" alum Fred Armisen.

The "Mad Men" actress poses on this week's New York magazine cover in only overalls ahead of the April 13 premiere of the AMC series' seventh and final season. And Moss opened up about the once-adorable couple's "traumatic" union and their split in 2010 just eight months after tying the knot.

"Looking back, I feel like I was really young, and at the time I didn't think that I was that young," the 31-year-old said. "It was extremely traumatic and awful and horrible. At the same time, it turned out for the best."

afaik Armisen was never accused of sexual harassment or assault, just being an asshole / bad boyfriend / bad date. he's admitted as much. Could be wrong though - anything in one of the Gawker pieces? I don't remember anything other than, yeah, DDL in Phantom Thread style coldness.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 22:33 (five years ago) link

I don't follow people/gossip news and rarely watch snl and I always thought Armisen was gay and a very nice person...
very perceptive !

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 12:15 (five years ago) link

Most surprising thing about Armisen (to me anyway) is that he was married to Sally Timms of the Mekons for several years.

Chris L, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 12:26 (five years ago) link

I don't know how long they were hitched. He was a punk indie Chicago scene mainstay, like Timms (who still is).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 14:11 (five years ago) link

I can imagine Armisen marrying a sc13no without knowing anything about it and then dropping the whole basket of clams when he realised

Not sure how well SNL's 1991 take on the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings would play today, but I think it's still very much on point. Featuring Al Franken playing a Senator no one remembers! https://t.co/pNGeMJKCEG

anyone read the big piece on Chevy Chase making the rounds? depressing and I kind of feel for him. The headlines pulled from it are kind of out of context though, which is ironic considering that's 'out of context' and 'misunderstood' seem to be the claims the writer is making for Chase.

akm, Thursday, 20 September 2018 02:54 (five years ago) link

(the headlines running in other places are "chase bashes SNL/Donald Glover" neither of which he really does in this article)

There's a new documentary out on Gilda Radner called Love, Gilda, which I saw last night. Very nice, though it never really shows a full skit with her in it (I suppose anyone can go look those up) and focuses much more on her life and what drove the decisions she made (to go into comedy, to not return to SNL, to basically retire from acting all together). Chase shows up maybe twice to say nice things; was surprised at no Jane Curtin or Bill Murrary appearances though.

akm, Saturday, 22 September 2018 15:00 (five years ago) link

one thing I learned in it that I had no idea about: she was married to GE Smith???? (and left him for Gene Wilder)

akm, Saturday, 22 September 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

Not if the documentary ever screens or streams or is released outside the US.

another show where they saved some of the funniest sketches for the second half. i don't know why they foisted that Fortnite thing on everyone as the first major sketch, it was awful. Driver as Pete Davidson's oil baron father, however, had me dying.

I think the less said about these kanye performances the best.

akm, Sunday, 30 September 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

More folks are talking about the Kanye MAGA "I am not in the sunken place" rant that happened onstage after the show had just ended.
