Drives me nuts too, like many media guys I knew in the ‘90s who were ~basically OK~ back then, has somehow become some shade of centrist dad.
The repeal thing: his wife should be recognised for her work helping to repeal the 8th, at least she’s not everywhere with that TERF nonsense.
― suzy, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link
No more than anyone else who spoke out; in fact I’d suggest that any random ordinary woman deserves more recognition for doing so given the longstanding stigma and death threats sent to many of them.
I could really link to any one thread but here’s a particularly awful one.
@Glinner why do you continue to support British feminists who do nothing to support Irish ones other then attack #repealthe8th groups for being trans inclusive?I thought you were better then this.— James Brophy (@jamesfbrophy) May 30, 2018

Feel like “centrist dad” doesn’t quite cut it at this point, or is at least less important than the “active bigot” part of his bio

I've definitely gotten a little too invested in issues, for a moment, that didn't carry a lot of personal weight. But why the hell some middle-aged completely cis/hetero dude is insanely into this one particular issue is so weird.
also the issues I've briefly engaged with never involved being insanely transphobic

Dumb question but is there any reason there's been a huge upswing in errant spaces in tweets this year, or is it just some byproduct of more people composing tweets on their phones nowadays?

i found out yesterday that i was blocked by a person in my field who i don't know personally and have never interacted with in person or online but who participates in the same twitter circles i do, shares interests/followers, know a lot of the same people, etc. idk why i am dwelling on this but i really want to know why. i also want to figure out who else has blocked but it looks like there is not a way to easily do that.
― marcos, Thursday, 2 August 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link
there are mechanisms that autoblock accounts if those accounts follow certain other accounts. like you can autoblock anyone that follows Trump or something. so it might not be personal.

Wish I could quit twitter. Aren't we due for another SNS to pop-up that's hopefully less crass?
We want to provide an update on the conversation over the last 24 hours around why and how we enforce our policies. As we indicated yesterday, tweets from Alex Jones and InfoWars are not currently in violation of our Rules.— Twitter Safety (@TwitterSafety) August 7, 2018

I don't care about Alex Jones getting banned or not or whatever it's just risible that they appeal to their Rules in situations like this when the actual problem is @jack is a goddamn Nazi sympathizer

it comes down to the fact they've made it clear they consider their service an online community with a completely flat structure. lists aren't especially useful, the verification of users is pretty arbitrary. they think this stuff is fine in their community

But Mr. Dorsey also said that while Twitter’s longtime guiding principle has been free expression, the company is now discussing “that safety should come first.” He added, “That’s a conversation we need to have.” He said he was thinking deeply about human rights law and listening to audiobooks on speech and expression.
you know it's serious when dorsey breaks out the audiobooks

I thought the whole thread on what jay rosen nyu media critic had to say to @jack was interesting:
Makes sense, as long as @jack understands: principles enforced impartially will lead to an imbalanced result under conditions of asymmetric polarization, where one side is drifting toward the extreme at a faster rate than the other. If you grasp that, then get ready for the heat. https://t.co/VEfJ1wXax5— Jay Rosen (@jayrosen_nyu) August 8, 2018

this is all just regurgitated half-skimmed max but twitter seems to have a p stable policy of taking actions when enough ppl complain and otherwise being hands off, which sits awkwardly beside their outward stance of being firm about ‘rules’, so they bring out jack to equivocate and say ‘we haven’t been good at that’ eighteen times whenever the discussion gets too loud to ignore
― flopson, Saturday, 11 August 2018 02:14 (five years ago) link
Q: if you refreshed your feed all day, what % of tweets by ppl you follow would you see? i feel like the answer is way below 100

just a steady deluge of Content
yeah, I only ever visit the site to do polls or get a link to send someone. tweetbot is still chronological timeline of who I follow and their retweets. that’s it
probably should open the official client some day just to get a feel for what people are actually seeing. it took a while to realize half the crap where people I follow are reacting to garbage is because that’s what the official client/site is giving them

Jack's approach to hate speech seems quite like that of China, where people are reprimanded more for "spreading rumours" and "disrupting social order" than for actual harassment or spreading bigotry.
Right now my biggest problem with using twitter is that half the people I follow seem to be so heavily engaged in the trans / TERF debate that there seems to be room for very little else, and there is no way it's going to end anytime soon. It is definitely an important topic, but arguing on twitter is like picking a scab until it bleeds, and the energy put into this could surely be better spent elsewhere. Recently I've found myself only using my website's twitter account, where I mainly follow sound archivists, and it's a much more pleasant experience, though effectively it means not following a number of old friends any more.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 18 August 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link
Twitter reminds me a lot of the "Is this racist?" thread here, where there for awhile, well-meaning people would post incredibly racist things and add "CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS SHIT?" Like, I know right? And yet, here it is right in front of me.
For example, the more lib the Tweeter I follow, the more likely I'm going to see a RT from the current president.
