“I enjoyed this game but I’m afraid I have to tell you it’s bad”

devops mom (silby), Thursday, 12 July 2018 17:53 (five years ago) link

I read it as 'this game does everything well except for the one thing that's a dealbreaker for me'

ciderpress, Thursday, 12 July 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

jrpgs maybe the genre where a single review is the least useful data point. there's such wildly varying tastes even among the most popular games.

ciderpress, Thursday, 12 July 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

These techniques aren’t simply a gimmick, though. Take, for example, the low camera angles. They create natural hidden pathways that hide treasures and secret areas behind raised foreground elements. It’s reminiscent of, say, the little invisible passageways that appeared throughout Final Fantasy 4 — but here, the use of scenery to obscure these secret paths makes for more intuitive exploration than you saw in the older game. Octopath Traveler’s level design does an excellent job of teasing you with seemingly inaccessible treasure boxes, then allowing you to figure out how to reach them. It turns nearly every town and overworld path into a sort of spatial puzzle to be unraveled.

^gets me really excited. you get a taste of this in the demo. pathfinding in FF dungeons was always kind of static, the introduction of literal depth to it all is a nice chance.

change

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 12 July 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

I'm surprisingly excited for the opportunity to play Captain Toad, even if reviews make it sound like it loses a bit without the second screen- I love that kind of hands-on toybox genre of game, like (to different degrees) Monument Valley or the Katamari games; something about having a birds-eye view on an inviting, tactile, closely considered world is massively appealing to me in games.

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Thursday, 12 July 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

i don't think it'll lose much if you play it with the touchscreen

ciderpress, Thursday, 12 July 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

Goddam this wall jumping in Hollow Knight.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 July 2018 03:22 (five years ago) link

yooka laylee successfully harks back to the heady days of ‘90s 3d platforming in that the biggest battle is achieving anything at all with these shitty controls

karl wallogina (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:29 (five years ago) link

there’s a challenge where you have to fly/leap through a series of rings, but the character is so slidy and the camera is so fucked up that it’s basically superman 64

karl wallogina (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 14 July 2018 00:31 (five years ago) link

i just bought Octopath Traveler. so glad progress carries over from the OT demo.

also got Captain Toad because the demo was so charming and $40 is not bad. i like the level design.

at one point the camera zoomed in and it looked really amazing but i could never figure out how to do it again.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 July 2018 04:38 (five years ago) link

CT zoom is x. now this is a fun little game toybox to chill with.

OT is really nice too. combat is super addicting and so far the dungeons & bosses have been so cool. it is so nice to have the option to skip story/cutscenes and just get to exploring or whateve.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 July 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

I stumbled into getting the dream nail in Hollow Knight, but I have no idea what it is or what it is for. I'm also currently dealing with the Mantis Lords, who seems achievable but still a pain in the ass, and for some reason feel like the first real bosses of the game.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

i need to stop fucking around and just approach hyrule castle in BotW. i'm eager to check out hollow knight!

Karl Malone, Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

lot of messing around to do in hyrule castle :)

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link

my last pre-hyrule grind plan was to pick up at least one piece of ancient armor and maybe get 20 ancient arrows or so - do you think that's necessary? or should i just unequip everything and run in there with only my underwear on? these are the only two options

Karl Malone, Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

octopath traveller is greeeeeat and exactly perfect for my commutes

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 17 July 2018 11:28 (five years ago) link

KM you don't need that many ancient arrows, but on the other hand they definitely can help!

Evan, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 12:41 (five years ago) link

Video games are good, can’t stop thinking about em

devops mom (silby), Thursday, 19 July 2018 05:48 (five years ago) link

don't forget to redeem your Nintendo points from your cartridge games by going into the game options on the home screen. it's only 1% back but it adds up. i keep forgetting to do mine.

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

were we talking about pinball metroidvanias recently, or was that a dream? or were we talking about this?

Yoku’s Island Express. looks great! "conquerable in about 5 hours"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 July 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

xpost to Evan

yeah, i ended up only using them like twice, with 18 in reserve! i'm totally one of those "end the game with 99 X-Potions" kind of people though

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 July 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

yes i talked that game up a bunch upthread. it's very good

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 July 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

oh thanks, it was above the fold (inside the fold?) so i missed it. it seems perfect for handheld mode.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 19 July 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

loving Captain Toad so much. i like how much it has the SMB2 feels. last night i was throwing radishes at HD Shy Guys

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 20 July 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

we packed the entire console, the pro controller and a spare HDMI cable to go on vacation. Such is the death grip that Mario Kart 8 maintains on my family. I’m hoping to get to put in some serious Octopants Travelin’ but unless I get a pass to stay indoors one day I doubt that’ll happen.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

Agreed Adam, Captain Toad is really great. So clever how much game they manage to pack into these little vignettes.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 14:39 (five years ago) link

We dragged our Switch around Europe for MK8.

Here are my boys and their cousin playing in Atlanta (the last stop on our vacation):

i used to play a ton of videogames with my sister growing up, and my only regret is that i didn't somehow find the time to do it even more often. some of my best memories

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

iconoclasts out next week apparently, that's one of the few remaining games on my indie to-play list
also picross s2 if you've somehow run out of puzzles in the first one

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link

also cosmic star heroine in a few weeks if people want another retro RPG after Octopath, or an alternative to Octopath that isn't 50 hours long

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

wait there's another picross coming out? good goddamn

Nhex, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

I went all in, sold my Wii and Wii U and pile of Gamecube games and bought me a Switch. Mainly to play Mario Odyssey, since I already had Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild for the Wii U. But... I bought them again because they're stone classics. Which is why I played Mario Kart all evening instead of Mario Odyssey.

anything worth copping on the summer sale

||||||||, Friday, 27 July 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

i didn't know there was one, will look when I get home

ciderpress, Friday, 27 July 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

may be UK and europe only....... ?

||||||||, Friday, 27 July 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

if there's one in the US it's not advertised anywhere in the news feed. theres a bunch of indie games on sale as always but nothing i can vouch for

ciderpress, Friday, 27 July 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

Tell me about Captain Toad - the demo was fun!

Was also thinking of picking up Inside - anyone tried it? I really enjoyed Limbo, but not really interested if it's just a carbon copy in a new skin.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 27 July 2018 20:53 (five years ago) link

inside does the same thing as limbo more or less, but better and with more impact

ciderpress, Friday, 27 July 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

i havent played captain toad yet myself but if you've played the demo that's basically all it is afaik - a chill diorama-puzzle game

ciderpress, Friday, 27 July 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

Yep, it’s more like the demo, difficulty is pitched pretty low but it’s a fun little thing so far.

devops mom (silby), Friday, 27 July 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

Captain Toad is very relaxing. Unlike 200cc Mario Kart.

com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 28 July 2018 06:04 (five years ago) link

not sure where to put this so I'm putting it here:

I'm watching a streamer play Hollow Knight without any of the nail upgrades and good lord, the masochism

(he's currently on like his 25th attempt at beating the Lost Kin boss)

El Tomboto, Sunday, 29 July 2018 04:14 (five years ago) link

i'm playing captain toad at the moment! xps

a couple of frustrating levels down to my own terrible game skill but it's been so fun, cute, interesting and cool to work out each lil level
thirty quid seems like a steal for this even if it goes quite quickly

nxd, Monday, 30 July 2018 08:20 (five years ago) link

my favorite levels are the puzzleboxy enemy-less ones even if they're pretty easy
