can't believe michael fabricunt has turned out to be a wrong 'un

NV, it was Peterson's interview with Cathy Newman on ch4 news that brought him to the attention of mainstream media, mostly as a result of misogynistic criticism of her on twitter and reddit etc.

i've seen and was aware of that interview. i'm not sure how much all round public impact C4 News has and i can remember being surprised that Newman was allowed to call him out because most of Channel 4 reeks of libertarians most of the time, more like Challop 4 imo.

points taken tho.

i mean maybe it speaks to something that it was C4 that wanted to interview him at all, not sure it was intended to be set up as a roasting.

The criticism mostly seemed to be people deliberately misunderstanding the way you would ask someone questions to narrow and clarify their position. Not that it was great.

this fuckin guy

Q: [From the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg] You have changed your tune on trade. What you said about May, is that the behaviour of a friend?

Trump says he did not criticise the PM. He says a story was done that did not put in what he said about May. He says he records his interviews. The story was “fake news”.

I don't think any of that really tallies with Channel 4's news output, tbh. They broke the Cambridge Analytica story on TV news a few months back, I don't really see much that could be characterised as "libertarian" in C4's news broadcasts, but perhaps you've seen more than me.

Is he sacking off the Sun? This is some alien vs predator shit

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:15 (five years ago) link

it's a combo of hating Krishnan Guru-Murthy and thinking about their wider current affairs/documentary output, including a lot of the soft "Secret Millionaire"/"Let's Meet Some People With Legitimate Concerns" stuff that they broadcast *a lot*

but i do think in trying to establish themselves as an "alternative" voice they drift into dickwit-adjacent alternatives on occasion

What’s wrong with KG-M?

Ward Fowler, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

eraserhead hair iirc

this is an underdeveloped thought that i'm not developing on a warm Friday afternoon and probly needs to go elsewhere but there are commonalities between my more boring lefty/righty retweet-happy friends and their sources that are constant sources of minor sadness and exasperation. the lines of flight between Bannon-Jones-Peterson and AnotherAngryVoice-RT-TheFuckingCanary etc are tangly as fuck and definitely a thing

KG-M was a smug fucking centrist cunt before it was even that fashionable

more like Toss, Ow amirite? (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 July 2018 13:21 (five years ago) link

centrists love Trump and all, he's their boogeyman, their justification every bit as much as Momentum or the Wokenet. fascists are always the stick end of centrist carrot/stick politics.

I’ll concede to the wider opinion on him because I never really watch c4 but I did like his destruction of the attempted lines about Corbyn after his terrorism speech last year.

is there a term for this whole morass of not-quite-alt-right online brains trustees where i'm prepared to believe the people aren't real nazis but they're just as likely to approvingly drop a Peterson article on their Facebook as they are an RT black ops piece?

all i know is that there are 2 Jon Snows of note

xp that would cut it but mayn't be exclusive enough to function

Almost none of these people (as i interpret them) will drop RT pieces but there's a definite tendency to throw in Peterson / gender-critical / Spectator / etc stuff under the "i don't necessarily agree with it but this raises some interesting questions" banner. I honestly think it comes back, more than anything, to needing to appear engaged in the cut and thrust of contemporary thought while lacking any real capacity to apply a substantial amount of thought to anything.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 13 July 2018 13:41 (five years ago) link

We have a vast number of people in this country who are mistaken for public intellectuals because their dad managed to wangle an internship at the New Statesman or Economist fifteen years ago and they're no more capable of not Producing Content than a shark is capable of not swimming and continuing to breathe.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 13 July 2018 13:45 (five years ago) link

Idk I’m less inclined to give the just-asking-questions crowd much leeway given how keen they are to give cover to much worse things just by their silence. Peterson is a real misogynist, terfs doxx and harass people and the spectator publishes fascists. You don’t have to be paying attention all the time but at the same time you’d have to be actively ignoring things to miss the worst elements of this stuff.

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:47 (five years ago) link

funny how they never just ask questions about whether the minimum wage should be £15 an hour or the rich should be taxed more or if climate change is gonna leave their children's houses underwater

"centrists love Trump and all, he's their boogeyman, their justification every bit as much as Momentum or the Wokenet"

ain't that the truth, some of these moderates need to act the hero occasionally - which is tough when you are just another amoral career politician - then along comes this gaudy exhibitionist..

calzino, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

It's all in the spirit of elevating 'debate' above everything else from people who won't experience what it's like to be at the sharp end of that. The thing is that a lot of them (eg Milo) tend to burn themselves out pretty quickly.

TBH a hefty element of this is that the revenue model of ad-funded online media is so fucked that if you're the online editor of the Spectator you will publish this shit because it's what people actually read. If publishers had worked out a way of making the digital ad ecosystem work then these people would have carried on in life as the fringe cranks they were all along.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 July 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

some of the centrists/tories are far more annoyed by Trump's dialogue, because of course whether they admit or not they have backed domestic versions of many of his administration's terrible policies themselves through lip service or parliamentary votes in recent history.

calzino, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

Trump wishes he could deport black American citizens.

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

many black US ppl have already longtime resided in an effective colony within the nation, as a recent book posited.

calzino, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

Sure, but I was thinking about Windrush. I was also thinking about a catastrophically awful tweet about one of the fbpe leading lights about something Trump has done along the lines of “this would never happen here”; they were deluged with evidence to the contrary. It’s a really crap stream of ideology that runs from unironically proclaiming that child separation policies would never happen here to telling people to shut up about Iraq. The hard right don’t need a majority of follower when they have useful idiots.

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

Centrists all idiots, wdn't categorize them as useful ;)

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

yeah, otm. If you were one of the Windrush victims you'd be wondering what the fucking difference is between Trump's hardline fuckery and ours.

calzino, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link

if this is the case then it is true not just of Trump's base but of most rich-world populations. Britain detains children. It breaks up families. It raids primary schools. UK children's NGOs collude with it. Not everything has to fit *your idea* of what happened in Nazi Germany. pic.twitter.com/mJ0DrG1xQ6

this isn’t what I was thinking of, but it’s addressing the same sort of cognitive dissonance.

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 14:35 (five years ago) link

It's true, tho of course there are people on either side of the human rights argument who might make that point

gyac, Friday, 13 July 2018 17:03 (five years ago) link

one of the rumours I heard from the tv gutter press (bbc newsnight) was that that they probably chanced upon the bottle whilst combing skips in the area. But the tone of their report (whilst Dawn Sturgess was still in intensive care) was SCRATTERS! DRUGGIES! Just go trawl through their private social media as you like.

If you're going to go all the trouble of attempting to assassinate a former Russian spy then just leaving the nerve agent bottle in a skip seems careless to say the least.

I find it hard to believe FSB assassination standards of professionalism has dropped to such a low in this era, that they are leaving dangerous/incriminating materials in skips. but wtf knows anything these days?
