Really hoping the new Aura Noir gets into my hands at some point. Having a lot of bad luck ordering European bands over the past year, like the last Execration - shit comes out and immediately is listed as Out Of Print on our one-stop's website, pre-orders be damned.

Man somebody really needs to do an anthology/reissue of the Doomwatch album A Symphony of Decadence and their demos. They were bros of Dream Death and have a similar rough punky quality, albeit applied to uptempo thrash instead of doom. Somebody... do that.

New split EP from Daemogog (excellent weird brutal death with churning bass and noisy riff-vortices, made my best of 2017 list) and Aumnarium (a little more straightforward brutal dm but still very well done)

the new one from a Dutch band called Shylmagoghnar, on Napalm - I hadn't heard of them before - is arrestingly beautiful music -- synth-loaded mersh black metal style, reminds me a little of Borknagar but not chaotic/herky-jerky. And a little of Agalloch, though since I never warmed up to Agalloch I might just mean "the guitar textures are kinda soft in that PNW dreamy metal style."

I pre-ordered Ineffable Demise's Beyond the Marrow Gates and promptly forgot all about it, until it landed in my inbox today. As expected, it is broooootal death metal that slamz, with a snare drum that sounds like someone tapping on an aluminum screen door with a ball-peen hammer.

I'm a little late to the party, but the new Skeletonwitch album is quite stunning. Its sense of dynamics amidst all the black metal bridges thrash and prog. What a vibrant piece of work.

I tried several times to get into Manilla Road but never could. Oh, well. RIP to a dude who lived it for real. Nothing but respect for that.

I greatly admire Manilla Road, and Shelton was a true gentleman who exuded positivity. Open the Gates and Crystal Logic are two of the best underground metal albums of the '80s. He will be sorely missed.

The new Khanus is even better than I was hoping from the teaser track above. I would say it's kind of a progressive Viking black metal thing, but it's hard to pigeonhole.

Lychgate is another interesting progressive black metal one. Maybe not as immediate as the Khanus but well worth checking out, especially for name-your-own-price:

I liked the Lychgate a lot but maybe not as much as the previous one. But I'm a sucker for those gothic (as in architecture) church organ breakdowns. Totally looking forward to the Khanus!

I really like this Lychgate and think it might win over some of the doubters. Less circus, less organ.

Rebel Wizard (8/17, Prosthetic) Exactly everything I love about the band - chaotic riffs aplenty, maybe a shade more epic than in the past, and he wears it well.

Tile (8/17, Limited Appeal) Allentown, PA noise outfit that touches all the right Jesus Lizard/Black Flag receptors for me. I'm planning on catching their record release show.

Uniform (8/17, Sacred Bones) Their first album was more industrial but they seem more like brainy, disjointed hardcore now (with Liturgy's drummer in the fold) based on their recent show with Deafheaven and the few spins I have given the new one. And that's fine.

Thou (8/31, Sacred Bones) It's fucking Thou, man.

Throat (8/31, Svart) A Finnish noise-noir group whose sophomore release provides uneasy listening that I can get behind, like Nick Cave joined Shellac. They are playing Philly the day after the Tile record release show which will make for a noisy weekend for me!

It's pretty cool to see the Black Dahlia Murder taking out some underground bands. Much respect.

The new High On Fire song sounds like a High On Fire song. New album out 10/5, produced by Kurt Ballou again. It's good, but I think they should stop working with him and maybe work with Erik Rutan or someone else instead.
