We are moving to Los Angeles in 2 weeks to start making 'Notes On a Conditional Form'. By the time we play our first show in January there will be two whole The 1975 albums that will have never been played before. I'm very excited. I bet you still ask for fucking Antichrist tho

I'm going to hold off listening to this until the album comes out, but after their second LP won me over I'm very much looking forward to hearing it. Interview has reminded me that I still find Healy insufferable.

actively anxious over what ~creative choices~ theyll be taking in the inevitable music video for this song

gr8080, Saturday, 21 July 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

What an incredible single! I thought Give Yourself A Try was just good enough, but I am blown away by this one. I definitely don't mind the nod to The Downtown Lights one bit.

kitchen person, Saturday, 21 July 2018 17:04 (five years ago) link

so confession time, I had been kind of self-fronting on the first album for a really long time, telling myself it wasn't really near the level of the second one, but over the past week I've been playing it all the time and it's finally opening itself up for me. "heart out" --> "settle down" --> "robbers" ranks up their with any of their runs

k3vin k., Monday, 23 July 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

I don't think the first album is anywhere near as good as the second. There's a couple of decent songs on there ('The City', 'Robbers') but Healy's vocals on things like 'Chocolate' remind me why I loathed this band for years.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

No Kevin, the guy who spent years cluttering this thread with repetitive denunciations of this band as the absolute worst thing to happen to recorded music is clearly best placed to now review its discography and sort the wheat from the chaff.

Tim F, Monday, 23 July 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

denunciations of this band as the absolute worst thing to happen to recorded music

It wasn't a difficult conclusion to reach based on some of the horrors that are on that first album, particularly when combined with some horrific nails-on-chalkboard vocals and Healy's insufferable personality. That he's blatantly a spoiled brat that had closer connections in the industry than most (let's not pretend he didn't) and has wealthy parents could afford to indulge him are nothing less than facts.

Thankfully, the music and the singing got better on the second album, which is a genuinely great record - at this point maybe even one of the best of the decade, so I clearly can separate the art from the artist if the music is strong enough.

this is perhaps the only good thread left on ILM and it would be great if it didn't revolve solely around one troll's storyline but you guys do you...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 July 2018 04:27 (five years ago) link

the debut isn't as good or as fully realised as I like it when you sleep..., and Matty's voice is more annoying on it but there's still a lot to love about it, it's the sort of album where half the album could have been made of lesser band's single hit tracks and then the other half is even better stuff like Menswear and Pressure

ufo, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 04:39 (five years ago) link

the debut is pretty perfect imo in that it feels so minor compared to what has come after it, yet you can easily see the roots sprouting out in all the different directions they'd follow. also there's something fun about hearing them very stripped down at this point.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 July 2018 04:58 (five years ago) link

and the songwriting is just killer across the record

prob my favorite climax of the handful of them on the debut.

I'd rather be talking about how good the new material is possibly going to me, but y'know what it's like around here. Clearly I missed the memo where the word "troll" was redefined.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 06:29 (five years ago) link

I actually gave the debut another listen last night - it didn't change my mind. I really love some of the EP tracks, including the ones J0rdan mentioned.

It's quite funny that people are now annoyed that I now like this band but don't make a point of worshipping everything they've ever released.

I already thought 'Give Yourself a Try' was great, but the new song is absolutely amazing. Love the Blue Nile nod. Healy is so fucking sultry.

FYI, the deluxe box thing (lp's, cd, books and assorted paraphernalia) of 'ILIWYS' is now up for grabs for just € 40 (down from € 107). That's just € 5 more than the 2LP, ie. a steal.

That Healy tweet from a few days ago is funny because 'Antichrist' really is one of their best tracks to date and I don't blame the 1975 hardcore for repeatedly badgering them to play it live.
