We have a fascist president and they actually made the effort to be physically present for a Hillary appearance to get mad about it. Were any of the Chapo guys at the family separation protests last month? How about any of the fan boys here?

NP, go and browse the CTH subreddit if you like and search for "protest," "action," "demo," "occupy ICE," etc if you're curious about how politically active their fanbase is.

Their commentary on Hillary is about 1/10th of discussing the rest of the festival.
― louise ck (milo z), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link
Maybe less - felt like five minutes in an 80 minute episode.
xp did you get lost on the way to the CTH fan reddit or something?
afaict the podcast is about perception of politics and the political media as much as anything, and covering a festival that's sponsored/owned by some of the same people that own The Atlantic and other political news media seems like an obvious move
― mh, Monday, 23 July 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link
sorry, xp to Nerdstrom there
Um, Chapo Trap House had an entire bonus ep on Occupy ICE. I can't speak to whether any of them attended a protest but it seems likely.

i'll give the episode a listen (i've been more or less enjoying the show lately) but that RS article is embarrassing. i mean, Of Course ozyfest was a godawful idea carried out largely by godawful people (though it would have been nice to see one of these pieces really engage with the fact that some folks who are actually at least somewhat Good like Gillibrand and Cynthia Nixon were there too), so i'm not really sure what was the point of making a huge show of how you totally were trippin balls when you showed up to clown everybody there.

because i find it entertaining when they talk about politics and find it incredibly tiresome when they talk about their drug consumption
it's pretty simple
― a Stupendous Leg of Granite (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 12:57 (five years ago) link
Eh this and some mention of purchasing edibles while on the west coast are really the only times I’ve heard them describe their drug consumption in any kind of detail (not a patron subscriber bye so maybe there’s lots more there?)I mean it could be worse. They could be beer nerds who won’t shut up about esoteric micros.

I think it's tiring but the drug jokes seem like second-generation mocking of the HST tendencies. I guess it's no more or less meta and navel-gazing than anything else my generation does but "I'm going to get messed up and go to an event like Hunter Thompson, isn't that dumb? *winks at camera*" is kind of played out

i might have taken a less jaundiced view of it were it not for the fact that 1) ozyfest is such a mindbendingly surreal event in its own right it kinda didn't need any chemical assistance and 2) matt and will tripping added nothing at all to their retelling - they might as well have taken a handful of cod liver oil instead for all the difference it made
― a Stupendous Leg of Granite (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

2) matt and will tripping added nothing at all to their retelling - they might as well have taken a handful of cod liver oil instead for all the difference it made
this is a great point, i mean taking LSD at a huge festival in central park is inconceivable to me, truly horrifying, you'd think if they're gonna do HST cosplay they'd at least incorporate it more into their reporting. it sounds like they microdosed, it added nothing other than "lol... theyre high"
