the drug refs have been few and far between but I agree with bg that the LSD and coke stuff is played out as hell

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

if you're hunter s thompson and it's anywhere between 1965 and 1975, for sure go ahead and mash together hard-nosed politics-beat reporting and colossal drug consumption, it'll be uniquely enlightening

if you're not, don't

is basically how i break it down to an extent

For folks interested in the YPG, big new piece in RS suggests they played a role crucial role in pushing back ISIS in Syria than previously reported

*more crucial role

i look forward to trump's message of congratulations to pisspiggrandad

that's a great piece simon, thx for posting

a Stupendous Leg of Granite (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 14:39 (five years ago) link

nice!

I think it's tiring but the drug jokes seem like second-generation mocking of the HST tendencies. I guess it's no more or less meta and navel-gazing than anything else my generation does but "I'm going to get messed up and go to an event like Hunter Thompson, isn't that dumb? *winks at camera*" is kind of played out

i might have taken a less jaundiced view of it were it not for the fact that 1) ozyfest is such a mindbendingly surreal event in its own right it kinda didn't need any chemical assistance and 2) matt and will tripping added nothing at all to their retelling - they might as well have taken a handful of cod liver oil instead for all the difference it made

a Stupendous Leg of Granite (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

spoiler alert: he was tripping on cod liver oil

mh, Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:50 (five years ago) link

that explains a lot, i rescind my earlier criticism in light of this new information

a Stupendous Leg of Granite (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

2) matt and will tripping added nothing at all to their retelling - they might as well have taken a handful of cod liver oil instead for all the difference it made

this is a great point, i mean taking LSD at a huge festival in central park is inconceivable to me, truly horrifying, you'd think if they're gonna do HST cosplay they'd at least incorporate it more into their reporting. it sounds like they microdosed, it added nothing other than "lol... theyre high"

Taking a museum dose of acid sounds like the perfect way to experience Ozy Fest IMO.

glad we sorted this out

this new premium episode is fascinating, I hope they do more of these deep dives into American obscura

yeah it was great

michael kupperman’s comics are awesome too

I actually like Samantha Bee and Chapotraphouse :(

she has a NEOLIB husband so they rag on that whenever she comes up

global tetrahedron, Friday, 27 July 2018 16:31 (five years ago) link

pretty sure the only thing they've ever ragged on her for (besides a...difference of opinion on satire) is the school segregation thing

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link

...which I literally only just learned this second was not actually true lol

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:34 (five years ago) link

In what sense is it not true?

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link

there was a quote from her husband in the NYT

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:39 (five years ago) link

I guess not so much "not true" as "open to interpretation if you're feeling charitable"

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/samantha-bees-husband-school/

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

She gets lumped into the pointlessness of Stewart/Oliver/etc. attacks (which have become more rare since Chapo has become the socialist Daily Show).

By this characterization no parent who has ever fought school integration is actually racist or classist. They always come up with rhetoric that gives them plausible deniability.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

I agree that it's unfair to lump in Bee/Oliver/Stewart. I have a better impression of Bee and Stewart than I do of Oliver fwiw.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

same

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link

I mean Snopes is really going beyond its mandate with that one. Anyone with an inkling about the way NYC schools are zoned and its racial and economic history can see that class and race were the biggest factors in the opposition the the city's plan.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link

it's odd that Snopes is mostly addressing a 2017 revival of that story.

The Meghan McCain episode was great

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

I can't believe Amber and Matt made me want to see the Purge movies

ugh I know

flappy bird, Friday, 3 August 2018 00:28 (five years ago) link

I've only seen the newest one - it's good! V obviously made quickly and on the cheap tho

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:40 (five years ago) link

I now feel like I personally know Meghan McCain

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:48 (five years ago) link

M McCain stuff reminded of the M McArdle stuff because it's just so bad and stupid that making fun of it starts to become depressing rather than cathartic.

ryan, Friday, 3 August 2018 00:52 (five years ago) link

It probably should have been a shorter segment, worth it for the reveal of Felix's bone-deep hatred of American protestantism tho

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:55 (five years ago) link

Sure but reading the inner monologue of these people on occasion does help remind you not to slip into any kind of illusion that society is a meritocracy.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:55 (five years ago) link

bone-deep hatred of American protestantism tho

this is a weirdly common thread among a lot of younger trump era leftists. the cultural critique that runs from max weber's "protestant ethic" to christopher lasch seems as much a part of it (perhaps unconsciously) as anything from the marxist tradition.

ryan, Friday, 3 August 2018 01:00 (five years ago) link

^fuck yes

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Friday, 3 August 2018 01:07 (five years ago) link

you have to remember that for people in their mid 30s, a lot of our peers that were churchgoing in their youth and broke away associate the whole enterprise with the heel-dragging on progressive social issues, or in more conservative communities, entrenched bigotry

there are things to admire in the protestant ethic but when your experience started with the satanic panic years and ended during the fight against gay marriage...

mh, Friday, 3 August 2018 01:50 (five years ago) link

and tbf the protestant ethic and being a protestant congregant became very different things

also, megachurches

Trying the Antifada podcast w/ Jamie Peck and her husband (?) - they’re even worse than Chapo at talking over guests.
