I think it's tiring but the drug jokes seem like second-generation mocking of the HST tendencies. By this characterization no parent who has ever fought school integration is actually racist or classist. They always come up with rhetoric that gives them plausible deniability.

I mean Snopes is really going beyond its mandate with that one. Anyone with an inkling about the way NYC schools are zoned and its racial and economic history can see that class and race were the biggest factors in the opposition the the city's plan.

this is a weirdly common thread among a lot of younger trump era leftists. the cultural critique that runs from max weber's "protestant ethic" to christopher lasch seems as much a part of it (perhaps unconsciously) as anything from the marxist tradition.

you have to remember that for people in their mid 30s, a lot of our peers that were churchgoing in their youth and broke away associate the whole enterprise with the heel-dragging on progressive social issues, or in more conservative communities, entrenched bigotry

there are things to admire in the protestant ethic but when your experience started with the satanic panic years and ended during the fight against gay marriage...
