I don't know the comprehensive history of who is and who is not a troll, this is just my reaction based on how things appear in the last series of posts

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 3 August 2018 02:34 (five years ago) link

turrican is a troll forever, always

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 August 2018 02:43 (five years ago) link

How it breaks down:

Katherine: Dislikes this band / is not a troll

Turrican: Likes this band / is a troll

"I’m not very good in the moment. The past is like this vague, hazy, beautiful memory, and the future is this vague uncertainty, and there seems to be this clinical spotlight on the present, where I don’t get to experience those things that I romanticize either side of it."

i connect with this quote a lot... been talking to my therapist about how much trouble i have living in/enjoying the moment

J0rdan S., Friday, 3 August 2018 04:15 (five years ago) link

insofar as there's some thread of nervous anxiety threading thru their music (maybe im projecting lol) i find this quote to be very enlightening about matty's mind

J0rdan S., Friday, 3 August 2018 04:16 (five years ago) link

also fantastic to hear that they're planning Notes to be "intimate, nocturnal and cinematic" - their Hats?

<slips into westworld host reverie> a whole album of songs like “falling for you” and “haunt // bed” and “undo” and “anobrain” </wakes up on surgical bed>

I'm not a fan of Hats, but if the band end up making an album like what Tim describes then it'd be superb.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 3 August 2018 06:37 (five years ago) link

I'm glad we're finally talking about music again rather than getting upset that someone who once hated your band now likes your band, or getting upset that someone likes certain parts of the discography but not others, or getting upset because someone likes the music but doesn't think highly of the person who made it.

yeah I feel you. there is a lot in that interview that resonates with me

k3vin k., Friday, 3 August 2018 13:41 (five years ago) link

Turrican should just never post about drugs. I actually enjoy his presence here personally otherwise

eris (Ross), Friday, 3 August 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

Reading his simplified opinions on drugs is way more boring than anything any band member says, and far more tedious. Before you try to dog me for drugs as well mate, I’m 5 weeks clean and going strong

eris (Ross), Friday, 3 August 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

I'd love to ask your man Healy what he made of his Dad's singing and dressing up in Tickle On The Tum. Must have been an influence on him of sorts. It was great back in the day seeing someone known for starring at prime-time as a hard guy on a building site (Auf Wiedersehen Pet, a bloody HUGE show at the time too) playing second fiddle to Ralph McTell and generally clowning around in a daytime kid's show.

TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME coming August 15th, with a video, and apparently it's the tropical house one!

ufo, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 13:21 (five years ago) link

I'm excited but the title makes my head hurt

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 13:25 (five years ago) link

is it 15th August yet??

Nourry, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 13:31 (five years ago) link

I swear that I only called her one time
Maybe it was two times?
I don’t think it was three times
It can’t be more than four times
I think we need to rewind
You text that boy sometimes!
Must be more than three times!
I didn’t mean to too time you

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Healy can read the phonebook for all I care, both singles so far have been brilliant and I can't wait for this.

Followed by the remix 'TOMETOYOUTOMETOYOU (Dedicated to the memory of Barry Chuckle)', I assume!

YES.

toby, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 18:39 (five years ago) link

This is Drake-level, and I don't mean that in any kind of nice way.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 18:46 (five years ago) link

It's a departure from the first two, but I like it.

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

i think i like it better than "the sound"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

it does kinda sound like "cheerleader" tho lol

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

but it's a pretty direct branch off some of the other stuff they've done... not incredibly dissimilar from i.e. "m.o.n.e.y."

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

it feels a lot more monochromatic / less dynamic than something like "The Sound." I feel like it yearns for some more content to go with that groove, but that might just be me and my disinterest in this sorta jam

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 19:07 (five years ago) link

yeah the comparisons aren't off but i feel like those two tracks both capitalize on space in a way this doesn't, "m.o.n.e.y." w the vocal syncopation, "the sound" w the prechorus swings out to snap back in at the chorus

lowercase (eric), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 19:10 (five years ago) link

seems kind of bad, when dorian said they were channeling drake i wasn’t imagining trop house drake of a few years ago... but we already know most of the rest of the album won’t be like this so im not stressed . plus it’ll prob grow on me

uh y'all are on crack, this bangs

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

feels like it's a minute and a half, just kind of floats along, fun little song

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

closest antecedent of theirs to my ears is probably "so far (it's alright)"

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

I admittedly don't listen to a lot of drake, but...drake??

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

the point about space is well taken but i think this is awesome anyway

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

Love how you all did everything but actually link the song. :-D

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link

i can see the Drake comparison in terms of the "top line" which is. three. 🎵 notes. 🎶. just those 🎵 three notes. on a slightly different order, and then again. 🎶

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 22:04 (five years ago) link

this is a little underwhelming, it's a good starting point for something but the killer hook I was expecting never appears and it just floats along without really going anywhere. the lyrics are also pretty bad and not in an endearingly ridiculous way either

ufo, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 23:37 (five years ago) link

I'm a little tipsy and it's pretty early so I don't want to say anything I'm going to regret but.......this song is really good, among their very best

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 August 2018 03:17 (five years ago) link

where are deej tim and brad

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 August 2018 03:26 (five years ago) link

christ, this is the best band in the world

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 August 2018 03:28 (five years ago) link

there was a recent episode of The Ringer's On Shuffle podcast that brought in the Switched On Pop guys (who i'm usually eh on but felt a lot looser here) and they ended up talking a lot about the sort of downfall of dynamism in pop tracks (the rise of chill), and how the metric for quality is a little harder to pick out because of that.

this feels like a track that exploits its lack of dynamic shifts in a really good way (lots of little sonic details and tiny tonal shifts). so i guess i find the drake comparisons understandable but nowhere near as negative as some people are framing it—this is earworm drake, not unmemorable hookless drake.

heart u k3v but might this be (tipsy?) hyperbole?

the first two new songs set an impossibly high bar, it's understandable they can't keep that up. this is very much a throwaway, a b-side song though. which is ok.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 August 2018 08:06 (five years ago) link

the lyrics here are 100% fuckboi but i'm extremely into the sound design and it's probably the single i've enjoyed the most from this era so far

monotony, Thursday, 16 August 2018 08:19 (five years ago) link

xps to austinb, will give that a listen! track's growing on me a bit, i dig how it feels like a fluttering that ends up stuck in a groove for most of it (the color-switching video helps accentuate that probably)

lowercase (eric), Thursday, 16 August 2018 08:52 (five years ago) link

Okay I think this is great.

It’s “throwaway” but deliberately so, the whole point is the layering which is much more intricate than your typical tropical track.

Basically i’m suspecting it will be the third album’s “Talk!”

haha def wasn't the tipsiness, I'm quite enamored. I must have played it 20 times already. I'm just so impressed by how well they're able to pull off all these different styles

I get the "throwaway" comment but I don't see it that way at all. an album track, maybe -- but something tells me this is going to sound great in album context

haven't really paid much attention to the lyrics yet, but the lyrics seem like not the point of this song

k3vin k., Thursday, 16 August 2018 11:54 (five years ago) link

I do not doubt this! I think it will, too. As a single, or singled out track, it feels a bit slight to me. But I'm already warming to it so :)
