actually it might take me three weeks just to get the list of eligible songs together

Somebody run a poll pleas

kornrulez6969, Monday, 6 August 2018 12:14 (five years ago) link

I can send the spreadsheet I used to do the SP poll if you want (based on the one someone linked here a while ago) that automatically sums the results of submitted ballots instead of requiring you to manually input ballots against a master list of songs? you just need to check for spelling errors etc to prevent duplicates

two weeks pass...

i was about to start a new poll tonight, not saying which one, but decided against it and deleted the thread at the last moment. i decided to do The Jesus and Mary Chain next instead but i feel that one can't happen in the summer. i will do that one in the winter of this year, maybe after my one year anniversary of Joy Division, who knows. all my other polls are up for grabs if anyone wants to take them over.

we have only done four artist polls this year?!? anyone in the mood to start a artist poll? ILM Artist Poll #91 is on deck...

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 August 2018 01:35 (five years ago) link

if no one else is up for one I'm ready to start a Tori Amos poll in a few days

ufo, Thursday, 23 August 2018 01:38 (five years ago) link

um HELL YEAH

I’m a day or two away from being ready on TMBG but happy to step back

16, 35, DCP, Go! (sic), Thursday, 23 August 2018 01:58 (five years ago) link

now is the best time I'll have to run a poll for a while, so I'll start it in a few days then. looking forward to TMBG too

American POLL Posse - ILM Artist Poll #91 - TORI AMOS - Results

Bee OK, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 23:53 (five years ago) link

Who's up?

kornrulez6969, Friday, 14 September 2018 02:34 (five years ago) link

It'd be wrong to do Low just now based on the new record just being out (and the reception it's receiving). I think it needs to be the early months of next year to have let it settle in.

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Friday, 14 September 2018 07:29 (five years ago) link

My thinking at the time of squelching the 2010-14 poll was that a "history of ILM" poll would be more fun, and would've covered 2001-16 at the time. But shit, we're so close to 2020 now, we may as well wait and do the whole shebang.

IMO we should do the 2000s and 2010s separately. I think a 2000s poll would be quite a cool thing to do

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 07:30 (five years ago) link

cosign a 2000s poll

nxd, Friday, 14 September 2018 12:16 (five years ago) link

2000s would be cool. Let me preemptively say The Glands too low!!

kornrulez6969, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

Doing 2000-2019 would condemn the earlier stuff owing to recency bias. A good look back from at least nine years' remove would be much more interesting. I know we already did 2005-2009 but a) that's only half the decade and b) it is weird how time shifts opinion

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:12 (five years ago) link

00s would be pretty interesting to do but that also means finally getting through the few hundred 00s albums in my backlog lol. definitely shouldn't be combined with the eventual 10s poll.

it's funny to look at the results of the previous 00-04 poll here, obviously the board was basically a completely different place then but there's mention of The Strokes and OutKast not even being nominated, Voodoo placing next to Get Ready, lots of bizarre little things like that

ILM Top 100 2000-2004: ALBUMS

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

oh they did do the first half! second half was erykah badu, portishead and the knife in i think that order but lots of weird ones again there

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

first half top ten stuffed with radiohead, the streets and basement jaxx. safe to say it needs another look

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:31 (five years ago) link

ILM Top 100 2005-2009: ALBUMS

the second half was still before my time but it feels like the board has changed much less since then. it's a great list yeah

those Basement Jaxx albums are still fantastic and seem a little overlooked these days imo!

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 14:34 (five years ago) link

a lot of critically-loved stuff from those years has aged quite badly imo - anyway, someone should do it

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

Trying to convince myself to undertake such a thing, but I'm not there yet.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:02 (five years ago) link

With imago on this one

Honestly 2000s seems so daunting

Find it easier to remember 2010-2014 most for some reason, possibly the insane amount of good music

Ross, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:26 (five years ago) link

a lot of critically-loved stuff from those years has aged quite badly imo

Yeah, I'd have to relisten to a lot of stuff. There's very little of what I liked during 00-09 that I feel like I can take for granted as being good now.

jmm, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

Yeah I'm down for a 2000s poll, even if calling it daunting is an understatement. We'd need a lot of time to go and relisten to all those albums.

Would we do songs? Albums? Both? With songs I could probably make a ballot in 2 minutes, albums not so much lol

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 14 September 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link

I mean, it could be fun to dive back in, because I haven't listened to Miss Kittin or Playgroup in yeeeears, but then I'll be mad when people vote up Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire and I have to smash my phone.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:51 (five years ago) link

nominations period might need to be a few months lol

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link

arcade fire will certainly suffer the wither of hindsight

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link

my real hope is that lcd soundsystem does too

imago, Friday, 14 September 2018 15:52 (five years ago) link

Badu still better be #1 tho.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Friday, 14 September 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

tbh I believe #1 still would be either Badu or Portishead, even now.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 September 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

seems redundant to poll 10s albums once more just to trace changes in taste over 8 years... more fun to do singles

niels, Friday, 14 September 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

if we were going to do albums we may as well do singles too

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 16:34 (five years ago) link

I can kick They Might Be Giants off on Monday.

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 05:51 (five years ago) link

We use wOBA for music polls.

clemenza, Friday, 9 November 2018 05:53 (five years ago) link

(i'm using the spreadsheet that's referenced upthread (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-6UZjUc-eioPify1wTOMXe_dSsjOQ6pBu0ZjT0I7CCQ) but i'm using lol numbers on my macbook so i have to make some adjustments and use vlookup i guess)

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 05:54 (five years ago) link

i don't know if ilx music polls are ready for the wOBA revolution

i'm going bee ok style! (1 = 50, 2 = 46, 3 = 43, 4 = 40, 5 = 38, 6 = 36, 7= 35, then one point less for each successive ranking down the list). posting it here in case some other hapless poll runner needs it in the future.

So... anything coming up?

Yeah, results usually rolled out end of January

groovypanda, Friday, 23 November 2018 10:50 (five years ago) link

I'm suddenly keen to run a Belle & Sebastian poll at some point. Thought there was mainly antipathy on ILX, but it seems that's not necessarily the case.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 24 November 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

Would definitely vote in a B&S poll.
