xp to Luna, would've liked to be around at "peak ilxor"

but the threads I enjoy are still good, and tbh I often find some of the old threads kinda weird

niels, Thursday, 9 August 2018 10:14 (five years ago) link

we need to determine the actual eras in a pre-poll thread then it must be time for another official vote surely

2001 - 2004 was peak ilxor. It was friendly, intelligent, sociable, interesting, sociable, fast-moving and people had more interesting and cute problems (eg crap jobs, flat sharing/room mates, travel on a budget). And there was a greater insight into peoples' off-board lives which i miss.

note that back then (when i was introduced to this place) we were all 100% anonymous if we wanted to be and the accretions of personal animus manifested and were discharged way differently

this is honestly one major reason I don't post more -- I've said this many times before but unless someone is using their real name I have zero idea who they are (the changing display names don't help), let alone the near-20 years of contextual detritus around them that everybody else seems to know

i'm not even sure what artists have ilm consensus anymore besides Kendrick Lamar

steely dan, hall and oates, the 1975, charlie fucking puth now

i only like one of the four consensus artists you mentioned :(

I came on in I think 2006 so I guess I just missed ‘peak ilxor’ but I honestly enjoy it more now than during those first few years I was here. Yes it was super dynamic but there was also a lot of mean jock bullshit which I do not fuckin miss at all.

Can’t deal with FB or Twitter at all anymore, this is the little patch of civilization I’m clinging to.

i don't understand the mindset that leads one to say "this message board used to be better". obviously ilx did used to be better before i started posting, but it's such a broad and vague statement i can't take it as meaningful. i have specific grievances with many of the regular posters here which i keep to myself because who fucking cares, i feel bad when i post something and nobody responds at all, not even to make fun of it, i feel bad when i post something and somebody only responds to make fun of it, i understand "there are more interesting discussions on twitter", but "used to be better"? like i'm going to go back and read posts from 2006 in reruns? personally i find how i feel about ilx is highly dependent on my mood at the time. if i'm super depressed ilx is shit because everything is shit. if i'm not super depressed ilx is a decent time-waste and good chance to read and post about things i don't generally get the chance to talk about.

anyway if i ever leave ilx it will probably be a result of some sort of contract dispute.

I judge the health of the board by the # of new posts/year in the Mouse on Mars thread

it's not looking good, you guys

frogbs, Thursday, 9 August 2018 13:54 (five years ago) link

probably because it feels like a club house, or a country club, where it's the same 5-6 posters (obv. i'm insane, over-generalising) referencing in-jokes half the time, and lack of content (pertinent to my interests), i suppose. for example, a fantastic aphex twin video / song drops, and people are ultra-ultra-blasé, almost like it's an inconvenience "I can't be arsed", "This is paint-by-numbers AFX", "My son made me replay the whole thing" etc. - obv. not EVERYBODY/// but, fucking *yawn*, i'm an ignorant / sleep-deprived asshole. the "vibe" isn't one of excitement, or earnestness.. it feels more like "oh, you again" ... it doesn't feel so inclusive, i suppose. more like a clique of cranky fucks. it definitely felt more fresh and exciting during the early-mid 00s, but what Arch Bacon said^^

Same goes for Aphex tbh (sorry). I recall ILM was good recently picking through the brilliant new batch of AE tunes, and you joined in enthusiastically iirc.

I know two original noize dudes that still post at least a couple of times a month.

Early-mid 2000s seemed peak because there was a FAP seemingly all the time or people hung out or aim'd late at night a lot. Like, some of those mean jokes I think may have only appeared mean because it was people who knew each other in real life play fighting.

Don't misunderstand the question. Aint about something more sinister.

yeah, there has to be some place to talk about music without PR and stanning seeping into everything

that said, I really do try to be more enthusiastic than blasé, it's just, again, the music I have that particular enthusiasm for is often not the music others do, and vice versa

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 14:50 (five years ago) link

Are there maybe not enough standalone threads for deserving artists, albums, etc.?

I think enthusiasm sometimes gets diluted when it comes up in whatever "rolling" thread.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 9 August 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

In general when people talk about things on the internet, especially people who are worried about followers and upvotes etc, their first concern is to appear to be an expert and the short path to that is to dislike/dismiss things. This handy folded-arms convince me why I should care stance is more depressing to me than wild stanning.

If I’m going to read/watch/listen to a thing, I find (more and more as I get older) that I start out by saying yes to the thing, after which it must convince me NOT to care.

i'm sure this goes without saying, but as evidenced a few times here, ppl's conceptions of "when ilx was good" are often more about their personal interactions on (and off) board and not anything intrinsic to ilx at that time, or necessarily reflected in the experience of other ppl inhabiting ilx at the same time

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

I do agree that the rolling threads tend towards offhandedness. They also serve to cement canonical consensus, as though only certain artists were deserving of their own thread.

pomenitul, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

if rolling threads didn't exist I'd have to start dozens more standalone threads with 0 replies

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

There were a lot of ILMers who suggested all indie should go into a single thread and then it kind of did, which I think was...not great.

omar little, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

(and also, like, writing is excruciating enough when I get paid for it, if I had to write a 500-word essay every time I wanted to share a track I'd rarely do it)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

However to katherine’s point a lot of people who would have discussed indie have split.

omar little, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:10 (five years ago) link

I was going to post something similar. I don't think it's *just* indie, though.

I've missed a few releases by musicians I enjoy because I scan ILM more often than I read about upcoming albums elsewhere, only to search this site and figure out that something that's been out a few months and reviewed hasn't really had any enthusiastic takers in these parts. The music writers who would bounce around ideas on ILM don't really do that these days, and some of the past regulars who would talk about virtually anything and everything don't do that.

mh, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

Similarly, it's kind of sad when my musical life phases to certain bands that don't get much attention on ILM. I rather not try to revive an old topic if it never had many posters in the first place (but I do want to share the enthusiasm).

Maybe people are too busy censoring themselves from talking about their interests because they to don't want to seem selfish or random.
