i'm sure this goes without saying, but as evidenced a few times here, ppl's conceptions of "when ilx was good" are often more about their personal interactions on (and off) board and not anything intrinsic to ilx at that time, or necessarily reflected in the experience of other ppl inhabiting ilx at the same time

I do agree that the rolling threads tend towards offhandedness. They also serve to cement canonical consensus, as though only certain artists were deserving of their own thread.

pomenitul, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

if rolling threads didn't exist I'd have to start dozens more standalone threads with 0 replies

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

There were a lot of ILMers who suggested all indie should go into a single thread and then it kind of did, which I think was...not great.

omar little, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

(and also, like, writing is excruciating enough when I get paid for it, if I had to write a 500-word essay every time I wanted to share a track I'd rarely do it)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

However to katherine’s point a lot of people who would have discussed indie have split.

omar little, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:10 (five years ago) link

I was going to post something similar. I don't think it's *just* indie, though.

I've missed a few releases by musicians I enjoy because I scan ILM more often than I read about upcoming albums elsewhere, only to search this site and figure out that something that's been out a few months and reviewed hasn't really had any enthusiastic takers in these parts. The music writers who would bounce around ideas on ILM don't really do that these days, and some of the past regulars who would talk about virtually anything and everything don't do that.

mh, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

Similarly, it's kind of sad when my musical life phases to certain bands that don't get much attention on ILM. I rather not try to revive an old topic if it never had many posters in the first place (but I do want to share the enthusiasm).

I regularly feel enthusiasm for stuff nobody else cares about/actively hates, I'll revive a thread with a lone post = whatever, twas ever thus

never trust a thread over 50 posts

sleeve, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:22 (five years ago) link

Maybe people are too busy censoring themselves from talking about their interests because they to don't want to seem selfish or random.

I’m gonna try to be more selfish and random on ilx for the good of the culture

I would be one of those people commenting on everything all the time, but would worry about (founded) accusations of dilettantism or self-absorption. As it is I usually go back and edit posts so that not every sentence begins with 'I', or seems less opinion-based, to the point where I just don't even sound like myself at all. The worst outcome of posting anything here is receiving something positive in response that turns out to be mocking, or where ambiguity remains. Maybe I'll take to using the 'SWIM' pronoun of old internet drugs forums.

dilettantism is good

marcos, Thursday, 9 August 2018 15:56 (five years ago) link

I will definitely try to filter my output less!

Is it too optimistic to hope that this biopsy of ILX will lead to more people posting more often? Seems like the consensus wants that. Maybe it will just happen.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

nah it's just people venting, happens a few times a year

niels, Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:07 (five years ago) link

yeah there are so many of these meta-STATE OF ILX threads

oddly they are all the same

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link

I'm going to start a Doopees thread on ILM later today when I get home.

My right arm used to be so awesome, so strong and agile. Now it's just weak and flabby. Those tattoos were a bad idea, turns out. Wish my arm could be what it used to be, man.

Piece of shit arm.

it’s less that I self-censor about artists I’m enthusiastic about, more that it just gets depressing to post into the void

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:16 (five years ago) link

feels like less of void when i post here than when i do on twitter

marcos, Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

katherine, i feel exactly the same way - there is definitely a gulf in tastes between many users. ive been championing the ionalee record for the whole year so far and like akm and I are the only ones to really comment on it seemingly. i agree with above that there should be more dedicated threads to single artists, but sometimes they sink (this happened with my cecilia thread, a fantastic record that has received zero traction). so the risk is putting out your feelers and seeing if anyone bites, if not, it may still be worth it to push something you love out there, even if 1 person hears it. the rolling threads as mentioned above do kinda narrow things down too much.

music has always been about radical subjectivism with the exception of some consensus-canon, let your individualism fly. (switching to new user name shortly, hence why i am still under this name FWIW).

Ross, Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

I'll test some ionalee and cecilia - whatever they are

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:22 (five years ago) link

oh, iamamiwhoami with ionalee... 'Play' is a great song

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Thursday, 9 August 2018 16:24 (five years ago) link
