I think it’s about the extremely mild friction of clicking on things until they explode.

yeah i assume its just the american version of dynasty warriors games, which i am generally lukewarm on

ciderpress, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

diablo's more about making numbers go up

Nhex, Thursday, 16 August 2018 06:23 (five years ago) link

strong first impressions from cosmic star heroine. the combat system uses a mechanic i like a lot from certain board games, where each character can only use each of their abilities once and then it goes on cooldown until they take a turn off to rest which refreshes everything. there's a nice risk/reward of wanting to be efficient and rest as few times as possible but also not wanting to get caught with no options on an important turn.

presentation wise it basically looks like a late 90s 2d jrpg like suikoden or whatever

ciderpress, Friday, 17 August 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

bunch more indie games:

https://youtu.be/qNUSrhEEvL0

nothing super exciting but I've played most of these at pax or on pc in the past if anyone wants words

tombot finally gets his terraria, in "2019"

ciderpress, Monday, 20 August 2018 13:44 (five years ago) link

grandia 1&2 HD... pretty random but more old jrpgs i never played are always welcome

ciderpress, Monday, 20 August 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

trying to decide what to play next... recommendations from the following: bayonetta 2, shovel knight, tropical freeze, owlboy?, mario rabbids?

Mordy, Monday, 20 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

i've only played tropical freeze of those but it rules if you like DKC games. very much in the spirit of the old ones in being super overproduced for a 2d platformer

ciderpress, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

have heard good things about mario&rabbids as a more deterministic and puzzley take on the xcom style of gameplay, not so good things about owlboy

ciderpress, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:02 (five years ago) link

i really liked the DKC game tho i haven't played them since it first came out on snes in 1994 and i was 10yo.

Mordy, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

Rabbids is an excellent xcom type game, easy at the beginning but really ramps up the difficulty towards the end. also features the best opera scene in a game since ff6 https://youtu.be/PH-cpqE-efw

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 20 August 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

i'm still enjoying the combat system in cosmic star heroine, though the writing has been pretty wonky, the first 4 or 5 hours reminds me of some of the old FF games in how it jerks you around from one Bad Situation to another without much sense of pacing and new characters just kind of happily jump into your renegade group without clear motivation. i seem to have gotten to the part where i have the equivalent of the airship though, where it slows down and you get to select your party.

ciderpress, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

I’m thinking about getting The Escapists 2 for local multiplayer with the kid. Anyone else tried it on switch?

El Tomboto, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:22 (five years ago) link

Heard bad things about Owlboy, but Shovel Knight is fun and tons of (smart) retro bang for the buck.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 August 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link

buy the shovel knight with 'treasure' in title. It contains the other one on eshop. Agree that it's great. I love rabbids, and i'd think a board game lover would too. I'd wait for a eshop sale on rabbids though and get all the dlc.

Agreed with all of this except that the one in Undertale is better

if you have amazon prime the super smash bros pre-order is still discounted for another week

Thanks for the tip! Ordered.

DJI, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 14:01 (five years ago) link

ok i thought grandia was a pretty random choice for a port but saints row 3 easily outdoes it

ciderpress, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

What? Wouldn't it make more sense to do SR4?

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

Other quick q: if I want to get Mario kart and play four players what do I need beyond my one joycon? One more or three more? Also should I get the wheel adapters?

Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

Don't need the wheels, which are nice but small (I have generic). But for 4 to play you need another two controllers, whether two Joy cons, two pros, a pro and joycon, etc.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 23:18 (five years ago) link

wait, how can you have just one joycon? switch comes with two ...

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

I guess I was thinking of the two halves as one controller

Mordy, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 23:45 (five years ago) link

Playing with the little half-controllers destroys my hands pretty quickly.

DJI, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link

just got MK8 myself. does the gamecube controller and adapter work with it? i'm probably getting that for Smash anyway

Nhex, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 00:47 (five years ago) link

i assume any controller works for mario kart all you need is a few buttons and a stick

ciderpress, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 01:05 (five years ago) link

another indie direct next week for pax games

Tune in 8/28 at 9am PT for a new #Nindies Showcase video presentation highlighting multiple unannounced indie games coming to #NintendoSwitch!

The drumbeat never stops. In the first few months after the Switch launch there were a few items about some indie devs being frustrated with NoA in particular about access to the developer program but even with a more tightly controlled developer program it seems clear that indie games are a pillar of Nintendo’s value proposition for this platform, not an afterthought.

faculty w1fe (silby), Thursday, 23 August 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link

Quacamelee seems perfect for the Switch, not least because it was on the Wii-U. Sequel just came out, I wonder when they will make an appearance? It's a great example of a game that (from the looks of it) I would prefer on the Switch to the PS4.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 August 2018 13:53 (five years ago) link

Really hoping for an “available today!” for Towerfall at this Nindies presentation.

faculty w1fe (silby), Friday, 24 August 2018 17:21 (five years ago) link

there's a few other things that could be shadowdropped - Undertale, Hyper Light Drifter, the new Shovel Knight expansion

Towerfall 9/27

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:16 (five years ago) link

nice, unfortunately all the games in my sphere of interest from this one i already have on pc except into the breach

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

hoping for pyre soon if we're getting the other 2 supergiant games

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:19 (five years ago) link

I’ve had Towerfall on computer this whole time but syncing PS3 controllers and plugging in over HDMI has only mostly worked at best so I’m jazzed for Switch.

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

i've been playing Into the Breach quite a bit (the mac port was released a couple weeks ago). there are things i love about it (the central concept of knowing what the enemy is going to do every turn, then planning out your response to it, knowing exactly what the results will be before you do it), and things i don't (the enemy AI is wack sometimes. and despite having a variety of environmental effects for many stages - tidal waves that destroy tiles, volcano blasts, etc - all of the levels start to seem the same after a while, just with different units on top of them)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

slay the spire also does the thing where it shows you exactly what the enemy is gonna do on their next turn and the gameplay is mostly reacting to it in advance. it's a good system

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 16:25 (five years ago) link

I've heard good things about Towerfall but have no idea what was really going on there. I've heard good things about Undertale but have been intentionally avoiding information. But I think the sleeper hit here is that asshole goose simulator.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

Towerfall is one of the best multiplayer games of all time

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link

otm

So glad the goose game is coming to Switch

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

i still haven't played Undertale and have managed to not absorb any info about it
