Derringer subsequently recorded several live versions of the "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" over the years. In 2012, Derringer recorded and released a new version of the song with lyrics reflecting his Christian beliefs. Titled "Read the Word and Live It Too," the song also credited a "Big D" for the rapped verses.
I spun the Johnny Winter version at a 70s Rock vinyl night I guested at last month and it went down well.

"rock on" sounded so spooky to me as a kid

I found R.E.M.'s quotation spooky too.

I've never heard that Stealers Wheel track before, a Joe Egan song too, I'm predisposed to like it because they're from the same town as me. I've always hated that Ooga-Chaka bit from the Blue Swede track and I've just found out it was Jonathan King's idea, so I hate it even more, it's a great song though, I wish the Box Tops had done it. David Essex should win this fairly comfortably.

For years, I only knew "Seasons in the Sun" via Too Much Joy's awesome cover. I don't think I ever heard the original until…
Just to nitpick slightly, *this* is the original:

This is easily "Seasons In The Sun" for me, which as gloopy melancholy as it is, fascinated me as a little kid with morbid lyrics. "What do you mean people can die when they're young?!"

"Seasons in the Sun," my first favorite song at age six

This one seems to be the most full of stuff that I liked at the time for a few minutes but even back then soon realized it was too cheesy. As opposed to stuff like “Hitchin’ a Ride” or “The Last Song” which I still maintain a soft spot for.Probably will vote for “Rock On,” which scared me at the time.

Never saw the movie it’s from, am somewhat curious.

I don't remember that song being in the film (That'll Be The Day). I think it was just on the Ronco cash-in "soundtrack" album to capitalize on Essex's starring role. That said, yes, "Rock On" should win this poll easily, though I'll be voting for Stealer's Wheel. I didn't realize Joe Egan wrote "Star" rather than Gerry Rafferty.

The Sister Janet Mead version on Spotify is a re-record. Here's the original, with wah-wah/fuzz guitar at the start. Not heard this before - it's surprisingly bearable.

The Redbone song on the other hand is precisely why I follow these threads. I have heard it before but I didn't know who it was by until now. Such a joyous track. The Rick Derringer is another find for me.

The Entertainer.
First heard this on the radio as a kid and thought it had the greatest melody I had ever heard. Solo piano renditions are better but Marvin Hamlisch's version is great too.

Felt the same when I was 11, then Reservoir Dogs made me hear it new. Then the Jays killed it again.
