Pieces of criticism get discussed and picked apart on here all the time and have since the beginning. I don't think that's so unusual. Not exactly sure why we'd be focusing only on Katherine's blurb when that feature had about 20 different critics chiming in.

It would be one thing if people just wanted to talk about the ideas in the article but thats not what seems to have happened. Dragging someone’s work into ilx in order to score poitns seems... vulgar

the issue is that I had previously not been posting in this thread, deliberately, out of deference to the people in it who seem to want an entirely positive discussion, which, fine, whatever, it isn't my thread. this is not trolling; it is in fact the opposite of trolling. if I wanted to troll I would have posted my review to the thread to kick the hornet's nest. but instead the hornet's nest was kicked for me anyway, turning an otherwise pleasant afternoon and evening to shit

It’s no consolation i’m sure but kicking hornets’ nests is the larger part of what ILM does.

I’m a little surprised ILM seems to love the 1975 this much that they’re kinda protected from critcisim. Love it if we made it doesn’t really seem like the kind of thing you lot would like—the social commentary seems a little on the nose and besides we live in an ocean of nonstop social and political commentary right now and do we really meed more stuff about trump in our music?

I’m not against it, I’m just not sure it is done successfully here

this is what i mean about not being able to see the world outside the prism of online -- pop music has entirely different functions than does surfacing bad tweets to your small group of follower. it just strikes me as a really myopic way to view art.

I don't apply the prism of online to everything, but it seems appropriate for a song from an album with Online in its title which quotes bad online memes

For one, the song is ontologically, conceptually and creatively distinct from the lines it quotes, whereas retweeting a bad tweet doesn’t quite get there.

This logic would extend to a criticism of news media covering politics because “it’s basically retweeting abuse for comment.” That analogy isn’t devoid of merit but collapsing all of these things together requires ignoring about five hundred elephants filling up the room.

i don't have much to contribute, but i just wanna say it's been fascinating (and edifying, really!) to basically see the no-platforming journalism debate play out in miniature by way of unpacking this song

i also wanna throw out there, sort of adjacent to/responding to katherine's concerns, that one of the (perhaps privacy-inconsiderate?) appeals of ILX to me has been its unique status as a forum where i've seen some of my favorite music writers really engage with each other in thoughtful dialog, in real time (not to mention the archive!). the relative transparency as to who writes about music and also posts on here has been an essential part of humanizing the world of music criticism to me, as well as a view into the backend of the whole space.

maybe that voyeurism is rude to the writer people who post on here, maybe my assumptions are naive, idk. i'm definitely skewed by my longtime abdication of privacy in my own digital spaces. i just wanted to provide a second-generation forum user perspective on the meta-question of linkages to writers' work outside of the forum.

I did not "drag someone's work into ILX" to score points. I posted a link to other critics' responses -- as I often do, and as I often do to my own work -- because I thought it was good writing about a band I've intermittently liked, including their last album.

Well, it would seem like if you do give 1975 obsessives enough rope they will hang themselces eventually. The biggest surprise is that it happened so quick.
