It’s no consolation i’m sure but kicking hornets’ nests is the larger part of what ILM does.

see

this is what happens when u create a board full of ppl whose job it is is to have opinions.

everyone thinks their opinion is amazing
no-one listens to anyone
and no-one knows when to shut the fuck up

wld probably be best for everyone to wrap this up for now & collectively agree to not touch this thread for a few hours at least

I’m a little surprised ILM seems to love the 1975 this much that they’re kinda protected from critcisim. Love it if we made it doesn’t really seem like the kind of thing you lot would like—the social commentary seems a little on the nose and besides we live in an ocean of nonstop social and political commentary right now and do we really meed more stuff about trump in our music?

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 04:35 (five years ago) link

I’m not against it, I’m just not sure it is done successfully here

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 04:46 (five years ago) link

treeship, these are terrible posts. please reconsider

It would be one thing if people just wanted to talk about the ideas in the article but thats not what seems to have happened. Dragging someone’s work into ilx in order to score poitns seems... vulgar

this is not what happened u moonfaced simpleton

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 17 August 2018 05:23 (five years ago) link

the link was literally shared by one of the co-authors, alfred soto lol

i engaged w [censored by the police]'s blurb bc i generally follow her ideas more than other posters on the board, no offense to alfred soto. i also engaged w. the ideas i didnt 'drag someone's work to ilx in order to score points' lmfao

this argument is insane, though to be clear, no one in this thread is

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 17 August 2018 05:27 (five years ago) link

presumably if k didn’t post here then specifically referring to her take in this thread would not be an issue

Specifically referring to someone also not the same thing as specifically referring to someone along with a question to them with 'you' in it and a seeming presumption that they'll be reading

Iain Mew (if), Friday, 17 August 2018 06:21 (five years ago) link

which turned out to be correct

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 17 August 2018 06:29 (five years ago) link

iain's blurb basically admits that he can't enjoy the song because he spends too much time online -- this is not the band's fault

This is an interesting response but seems contradictory to Kevin's point that the awfulness is mainstream!

Again, the song reminds me of people who seek out awful abuse online to retweet it for commentary - it's really easy to see that there's a lot awful things out there, and that is worth talking about, it's the specific way to do so that I disagree with

this is what i mean about not being able to see the world outside the prism of online -- pop music has entirely different functions than does surfacing bad tweets to your small group of follower. it just strikes me as a really myopic way to view art.

J0rdan S., Friday, 17 August 2018 06:45 (five years ago) link

I don't apply the prism of online to everything, but it seems appropriate for a song from an album with Online in its title which quotes bad online memes

Iain Mew (if), Friday, 17 August 2018 06:54 (five years ago) link

For one, the song is ontologically, conceptually and creatively distinct from the lines it quotes, whereas retweeting a bad tweet doesn’t quite get there.

This logic would extend to a criticism of news media covering politics because “it’s basically retweeting abuse for comment.” That analogy isn’t devoid of merit but collapsing all of these things together requires ignoring about five hundred elephants filling up the room.

Tim F, Friday, 17 August 2018 06:56 (five years ago) link

i don't have much to contribute, but i just wanna say it's been fascinating (and edifying, really!) to basically see the no-platforming journalism debate play out in miniature by way of unpacking this song

austinb, Friday, 17 August 2018 07:07 (five years ago) link

i also wanna throw out there, sort of adjacent to/responding to katherine's concerns, that one of the (perhaps privacy-inconsiderate?) appeals of ILX to me has been its unique status as a forum where i've seen some of my favorite music writers really engage with each other in thoughtful dialog, in real time (not to mention the archive!). the relative transparency as to who writes about music and also posts on here has been an essential part of humanizing the world of music criticism to me, as well as a view into the backend of the whole space.

maybe that voyeurism is rude to the writer people who post on here, maybe my assumptions are naive, idk. i'm definitely skewed by my longtime abdication of privacy in my own digital spaces. i just wanted to provide a second-generation forum user perspective on the meta-question of linkages to writers' work outside of the forum.

great posts by Tim and Jordan itt, much better than the song tbh

I did not "drag someone's work into ILX" to score points. I posted a link to other critics' responses -- as I often do, and as I often do to my own work -- because I thought it was good writing about a band I've intermittently liked, including their last album.

Well, it would seem like if you do give 1975 obsessives enough rope they will hang themselces eventually. The biggest surprise is that it happened so quick.

Alfred linked to a review of the 1975 single so we could discuss it here. That's about as normal as things get on an internet forum about music. Having those reviews - including Katherine's - discussed here is too. That's not "vulgar" ffs.

also calling me a troll and calling my viewpoint -- shared by six other people in that post alone, not to mention many other people -- "insane" is the opposite of "thoughtful dialog."

talking about the 1975 anywhere at all on the internet as a non-stan apparently

why is this still happening

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 17 August 2018 12:38 (five years ago) link

Because a bunch of 1975 obsessives got butthurt about someone's opinion.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 17 August 2018 12:42 (five years ago) link

i cannot think of anything worse than yesterday's conversation except you continuing it by being smug, so please, this isn't remotely from a place of beef, stop it

imago, Friday, 17 August 2018 12:45 (five years ago) link

I have been asleep for the past six to seven hours and have had the apparently objectionable review taken down, so unless I have spontaneously developed the ability to sleep-post and have those posts be invisible upon waking up, the reason this is still happening is not me

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 12:45 (five years ago) link

no one is mentioning you itt rn and i will encourage everyone to never mention you again and hopefully that continues for the rest of time

katherine, why do you even care that a gaggle of doughy aging nerds have a different opinion than you about a band for teenagers writing the Pepe version of Say Anything’s “Admit It!”

yeah I mean you could just email Whiney

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 17 August 2018 16:01 (five years ago) link

personally i hear more afrobeats than 'tropical house' in its rhythmic dna

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 17 August 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link

Re the new single I don’t have a problem w the approach musically at all, I agree that lyrically it feels like a bit of a step down and maybe not a single that sticks with you but “the sound” is kind of an imperfect record also... idk to me it’s ok

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 17 August 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

I really don’t get the comparison to “the sound” sonically, lyrically I think “tootime” is really simple and direct in a way that complements the breezy atmosphere of the music well

k3vin k., Friday, 17 August 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

I can take or leave either single, and while I didn't like "Love It If We Made It" I prefer the 1975 when Healy gets creepy over mid tempo ruminations ("A Change of Heart" might be my favorite 1975 song
