While I appreciate that you love a good scapegoat, I had nothing to do with the current clusterfuck on that thread. The way katherine was targeted on that thread was not on - but unfortunately unsurprising.

(it also doesn't help that the field -- I don't want to go into details -- is notorious for firing and/or suspending people based on things they say or do in their personal life, and has gotten significantly worse about this after 2016. there's a reason I rarely post about politics, for instance, under my government name, unless it's things like "putting children in cages is bad," and even that kind of thing has cost people jobs in this field)

i think extrapolating all of that based off a few posts in a 5,000 post thread about the 1975 is allowing yourself to spiral to places that are unrealistic and unhealthy but that's just my opinion

it isn't really unrealistic when scouring people's old social media posts, going back years and thousands of posts, is a thing that happens in today's world

katherine, i do think it's smart for everyone to be careful in what they post these days, but I honestly cannot fathom an army of pepes demanding you should be fired from a job because you don't like the 1975

arguing about things is the opposite of fun, which is why I try to avoid it at all costs. unfortunately, in this case, I didn't avoid it hard enough I guess

tbh I think there's a line between "don't have haters" and "don't engage the haters" that's being blurred here

can someone explain what the fierce loyalty for that band is all about? this seems very un-ILM. the whole joke before was that it was hard to find an artist that everyone could agree on. that is actually the reason i wanted to post to ILX and not another messageboard--it's not a fan forum but a community of critics (pro and amateur)

no one should feel like they can't post on a thread because they dislike the artist. threads aren't subreddits.

in this case it's more "no one should feel like they can't write elsewhere on the Internet because they dislike the artist"

because they're not random people from the internet (which is upsetting enough as it is). these people either are my actual colleagues or know my actual colleagues, and I either encounter them in real life or encounter people who know them in real life, and now an indeterminate amount of them are upset with me or think less of me

katherine, I'd go out on a limb and suggest that anyone whose opinion of you is lowered as a result of whatever happened in the thread about the 1975s is maybe someone whose opinions are way too easily swayed by basically nothing and therefore suspect as a general thing.

i'm happy to say that i'm confident not a single one of your colleagues in that thread thinks any less of you because you don't like the 1975

like, if I did upset anybody I am sorry (I know "I'm sorry if I upset you" is considered shitty but in this case I genuinely do not know whether people are upset with me, who is and is not upset with me, and for what reason). it was not my intention at all, and I realize that "it was not my intention" is meaningless, but I'm sorry

I'd say to walk away. and I say this as someone who's been irritated by a couple work meetings with someone I am sure is acting in bad faith, but I just mentioned my feedback to the right people and I'm gonna forget about it because there's literally nothing I can do and no real effect on the rest of my work

it's the churn that looks bad, never engage with people making bad faith arguments and have faith in the people who aren't acting in bad faith. it's wrestling a pig, you're just going to end up looking silly and get covered in mud
